In his past life, Lu Fei Fan had studied Human Dissection, and he always believed that human nature was complex.
When a person is in despair, they tend to fall into two extremes.
The brave who dare to face adversity ascend to the heavens, while the cowardly who succumb to it descend into hell.
He had witnessed the scum who betrayed their comrades in critical moments; the depravity of human nature was more terrifying and ferocious than demons crawling out of hell.
Fortunately, he had also seen the brilliance of humanity shining brightly in times of crisis. Each time, it gave him the illusion that the guardians of humanity were actually by his side.
Demons were no different; every human body contained either a demon or a spirit, it was merely a matter of choice which one to become.
Among the wounded soldiers fighting fiercely in the base, though they could not be considered great, they covered their comrades' retreat, sacrificing their own will to survive. This was an unspeakable tragedy, and even no one would remember them.
As Suma's reckless vehicle burst forth, gunfire continued to echo throughout the base.
The vehicle shot out like an arrow, piercing through the fog-laden Shangu and flying out from amidst the encircled Beast Horde.
The beasts trailing behind were struck down one by one by Lu Fei Fan’s shots. The power of You She was an extremely effective harvesting weapon in the open wilderness; even the massive Armored Beasts fell easily to its piercing shots, bursting into clouds of blood mist before collapsing heavily to the ground after a few steps.
As the gunfire gradually faded within Shangu, the vehicle never slowed down for a moment, continuing to charge forward with all its might.
For both the cavalry and Lu Fei Fan knew that danger still lurked.
While the vehicle traversed the flat expanse of the Gobi Desert, amidst a mountain range shrouded in thick, deep fog, a pair of Consciousness eyes watched intently from within the mist, locking onto the vehicle and observing humanity's departure.
Lu Fei Fan felt an ominous presence enveloping him; he kept his You She aimed behind him, searching for its source but found nothing.
It was not just Lu Fei Fan who felt it; the horse team seemed to share the same sentiment. He sat in the passenger seat, frowning and remaining silent.
The feeling only dissipated after they had driven over ten kilometers.
When the car's tires could no longer bear the load and exploded with a loud bang, Suma had no choice but to stop the vehicle and take deep breaths.
Da Fu Ge jumped out of the car and lifted the hood, a wave of heat rising from the engine. He waved his hand urgently, calling Jiu Ye and Jia Jia to fetch water while he teamed up with Suma to replace the tire with a spare.
Fu Qinqin was tending to the injured on the vehicle, while Lu Fei Fan and the horse team split up, taking turns to keep watch.
Lu Fei Fan held You She as he climbed to a high ground. With an energy heat source mirror, he scanned the surrounding environment, crouching between two intersecting rocks for cover. In his perception, there were no living beings within a hundred meters.
However, he noticed that fog began to rise again, and soon he felt himself enveloped in damp mist.
Fortunately, half an hour later, Da Fu Ge signaled that it was time to regroup.
"The vehicle can't move forward completely; it's too heavy unless we find another vehicle," Da Fu Ge said as he closed the hood and patted the overloaded car helplessly.
Everyone cautiously squeezed back into the vehicle. This time, Da Fu Ge took over driving. The horse team remained in the passenger seat, while Fu Qinqin gripped her Fire Howl Gun in the back. Others huddled together or found their seats as the car started moving slowly.
Night fell over them like a vast canopy, stars twinkling like scattered gems against a picturesque backdrop.
The fog in the wilderness gradually thinned, revealing a soft glow from the moonlight that cast a serene whiteness over everything.
As they drove into a striking area of Shilin, it became evident that they were only a short distance from their base. Lu Fei Fan recalled passing through here before; it was in this very Shilin that Suma and his vehicle had been ambushed. They alerted the horse team, who instructed everyone to remain vigilant.
As they navigated through Shilin, everyone heightened their awareness, scanning their surroundings. The peculiar stone pillars of Shilin stood tall and strange, eroded by relentless winds and sands into bizarre shapes—some sharp as blades, others standing upright like green onions, and some claw-like formations reaching toward the sky as if the earth itself were stretching out its hands.
In this area of Shilin, for reasons unknown, many plants grow unusually lush. Da Fu Ge speculated that there might be an underground river beneath, but after numerous changes in its course, it would be difficult to find a water source on the surface without prior experience.
As the vehicle entered the central region of Shilin, Lu Fei Fan seemed to sense something ominous. It was as if he had picked up on a warning.
Suddenly—
Boom!
A tremendous shockwave hurled him and the others in the vehicle into the air, crashing them onto a pile of grass.
The deafening explosion temporarily rendered his ears useless, and a buzzing sound throbbed painfully against his eardrums. Lu Fei Fan felt a deep ache throughout his body. He clearly saw two previously injured warriors lying on the ground; one was missing half of his body, while the other dragged a bloodied leg and screamed in agony.
Unfortunately, Lu Fei Fan couldn't hear anything at that moment; otherwise, he would have certainly heard the tragic cries of that warrior. Both were members of the Sword Serpent Squad who had just escaped from a besieged base, believing they could make it out alive—but alas…
Whoosh! Whoosh!
The sound of bullets whizzed through the night like fireflies.
Cai Bi quickly crawled over to drag the legless casualty to a spot behind some rocks in Shilin to apply first aid and stop the bleeding. Fu Qinqin and the cavalry took cover behind a boulder, already firing their weapons at the elevated position held by Shangu. Bullets struck the pillars of Shilin, sending clouds of dust half a meter high splattering around like raindrops.
Da Fu Ge was checking on the unconscious Suma for injuries. After assessing the situation, he waved to Cai Bi to signal that there were no major issues. Jia Jia and Jiu Ye rushed over to pull Lu Fei Fan behind a rock; Jiu Ye had been shot in the shoulder but remained silent despite his robust physique.
Lu Fei Fan recalled that the explosion's epicenter must have been right beneath him—it had to be a landmine.
If it weren't for the reinforced chassis of their off-road vehicle, they would likely have been killed in that blast. The person who set up this ambush was truly ruthless; there were surely more minefields nearby.
When Lu Fei Fan's hearing returned, he felt Jiu Ye shaking him and asking, "Hey, are you okay?"
Lu Fei Fan closed his eyes and took a deep breath as the Pulse Energy began to circulate within him. The energy dissipated all the impacts and damage he had sustained, and when he opened his eyes again, he felt completely transformed. Even Jiu Ye looked a bit surprised.
“Damn it! What kind of Pulse Breathing Technique do you have? It’s so effective! You can take hits, fight back, and even fly! Heh, when we get back alive, you’ve got to teach me. I want to experience flying too!” Jiu Ye exclaimed, then turned towards the machine gun, unleashing a barrage of fire that struck two enemy positions.
Jia Jia wasn’t skilled with hot weapons, but he clutched a standard rifle and retaliated.
“Move out! We can’t stay here too long,” the cavalry leader ordered the team to retreat.
Although they were ambushed, they hadn’t anticipated that the members of the Fei Hu Battle Team would be so well-equipped, even more so than an ordinary Special Operations Team.
Lu Fei Fan raised his Azure Serpent Sniper Rifle. With the help of the Pulse Breathing Technique, he could see the energy trails of bullets that had been fired at him in the air. He easily identified two or three targets.
As everyone retreated in unison, Lu Fei Fan's You She rang out sharply across the battlefield.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The cavalry leader and Fu Qinqin deliberately glanced back for a moment, then exchanged knowing looks before turning to watch Lu Fei Fan together.
As the cavalry leader crouched low and passed by Lu Fei Fan, he patted him on the shoulder in approval of his shooting skills.
Fu Qinqin looked at Lu Fei Fan with a complex expression. She recalled how she had been held in his arms earlier, especially when she had screamed and instinctively clung to him. Her face flushed involuntarily at the memory.
“What are you thinking about? Let’s go!” Lu Fei Fan said as he pulled the dazed Fu Qinqin along and turned to retreat.
Two hand grenades were thrown from behind them, landing on an overturned car. The already burning off-road vehicle erupted in two massive explosions, creating a wall of flames that obscured the line of sight for the ambushers behind them. By the time the flames subsided, Lu Fei Fan and his companions had vanished into the night in Shilin without a trace.
After about ten minutes, a group of people finally approached from behind the burning vehicle.
The group of people was adorned with strange totem tattoos on their bare skin, with some wearing animal bones and teeth as decorations around their necks, heads, and arms.
At the center of this gathering was a Chieftain wearing a colorful feathered indigenous hat. He was none other than Crazy Horse, who had ambushed Lu Fei Fan several times.
He glanced at the corpse on the ground, inspected it briefly, but found nothing useful and decided to give up.
“Chieftain, it seems these people just stumbled upon our Landmine by accident,” said a young man with peculiar patterns tattooed on half of his face.
Crazy Horse looked at the burning off-road vehicle in front of him, feeling that it looked somewhat familiar.
“Chieftain, it’s about time to withdraw; preparations are nearly complete over there,” the young man reminded him again.
“Tupa, take a few people to clean up the battlefield quickly. The rest of you, move out,” Crazy Horse instructed another shorter young man before leading the remaining ten or so individuals away.
What Crazy Horse did not know was that several hundred meters away, on a hill, Lu Fei Fan was lying down with a sniper scope, observing Crazy Horse and his group. However, he could not hear what they were saying.
Beside him lay Ma Dui, also holding a pair of binoculars.
“So it’s this Indigenous Squad,” Ma Dui said as he lowered the binoculars, seemingly having dealt with them before.
“Fate has brought us back together,” Lu Fei Fan remarked succinctly.
“Were they the ones who ambushed you on your way here?” Ma Dui speculated.
“Do they have some way to evade the Beast Horde? How is it that they remained unharmed while surrounding the base?” Lu Fei Fan suddenly asked.
Ma Dui stroked his rough beard thoughtfully and replied, “I’ve heard from other teams that these indigenous people have shamans who can communicate with mystical beasts.”
“Could they possibly anticipate the movements of the Beast Horde in advance?” Lu Fei Fan asked in response.
“It’s hard to verify, but I find it suspicious that these people are always lurking around this area. They must have some ulterior motive,” the horseman speculated.
“Shall we follow them and take a look?” Lu Fei Fan suggested.
The horseman stroked his chin, glancing at the personnel behind them. Among them, the injured soldier with a severed leg was in a dire situation, while Cai Bi and Da Fu Ge were working together to provide aid.
“Alright, we can check it out. If things seem off, we’ll seize their vehicle. It would be too exhausting to walk back on foot,” the horseman decided to take the risk. In the wilderness and even at sea, risk and opportunity often went hand in hand—a truth well understood by adventurers.
Thus, the horseman, along with Lu Fei Fan, called upon Fu Qinqin and Jia Jia. The four of them set out, leaving Da Fu Ge, Jiu Ye, and Cai Bi behind to care for the severely injured soldier and the recently awakened Suma. Suma had stubbornly insisted on joining them, but was ultimately refused by the horseman.
Who knows what these natives are scheming in this Shilin area? If there’s another ambush, we might find ourselves fleeing for our lives again.
However, Lu Fei Fan had a nagging feeling that these natives were definitely up to something.
