As they stepped into the heart of the rainforest, the diverse and ancient trees filled their vision, a breathtaking spectacle that left them in awe.
Towering like giants, the trunks and branches of the coniferous trees stretched out from mid-air, plunging into the sea below. Gradually thickening, these became the pillar roots that supported the canopy, creating a unique landscape where single trees formed a dense forest.
The lush foliage created a green barrier around the rainforest, with dappled sunlight occasionally breaking through the gaps, casting golden beams like blades of light piercing through the dimness of the jungle.
Under the leadership of Adi Di, the Fei Hu Battle Team navigated a somewhat treacherous path. Once they reached the outskirts of the forest, they had no choice but to abandon their vehicles. Everyone carried their own gear and supplies as they trekked onward.
The journey was surprisingly quiet, occasionally interrupted by startled birds that screeched and took flight, desperately trying to break through the treetops and return to the open sky. Watching them, some felt an odd illusion as if they were trapped in a giant birdcage.
Adi's method of leading was rather peculiar; she would often walk a few steps before stopping to sniff the air, then point toward a thicket ahead and say, “This way.”
At first, the horse team and Da Fu were puzzled by her behavior, but they chose to trust her. They could only signal Jiu Ye to clear a path with his Combat Knife.
However, after several instances of this peculiar navigation, Jiu Ye’s patience began to wear thin.
“Damn it! Are you doing this on purpose? This is the ninth time! Just now I cut through a nest of ironwood bees; if it weren't for my tough skin, my backside would have been stung into a mess! What kind of dangerous thing is lurking here?”
“Lao Jiu, calm down,” the horse team urged him to rein it in.
“I’ll take over,” Lu Fei Fan volunteered, drawing his Silver Sparrow and moving ahead to clear a path. The dense Jing Ji trees fell away beneath Lu Fei Fan’s swift Blade like layers of fallen leaves.
“This Knife Technique… it possesses an impressive momentum. Given time, it may even evoke the roar of tigers and dragons,” Jiang Yu praised as he took out a notebook and pen to sketch Lu Fei Fan in action.
Da Biao and Qin Qin watched curiously as Jiang Yu began to draw.
Seeing him sketching instead of mapping out their route made Da Biao raise an eyebrow in confusion. “I thought you were drawing a map…”
“Just felt inspired; sometimes you need to relax,” Jiang Yu replied leisurely, like a traveler enjoying an autumn outing. Fu Qinqin lost interest immediately, but Jiang Yu's sketch vividly captured Lu Fei Fan wielding his Zhan Dao with fierce intensity.
At that moment, Cai Bi leaned over and saw Jiang Yu's masterpiece, unable to help but flatter, "Indeed, it's the work of a master; the brushwork is profound."
"Of course, that's only natural. Who am I? A gifted individual, proficient in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting," Jiang Yu replied, clearly enjoying Cai Bi's praise.
"Then could you... teach me how to paint?" he asked, raising his chin and glancing at Fu Qinqin, his intention unmistakable. However, Qin Qin shot him a glare that made him shrink back.
"That's certainly possible, but..." Jiang Yu suddenly paused. "To learn painting, one must first learn to be a model!"
He then scrutinized Cai Bi from head to toe.
Cai Bi immediately covered himself with both hands and stepped back, feeling as if this deranged artist had seen right through him.
Jiang Yu casually turned away and continued to sketch in his notebook. "Loving art requires sacrifice; without sufficient effort, how can one expect to reap rewards?"
Just the thought of being stripped bare and measured by this fellow with a paintbrush sent a shiver down Cai Bi's spine.
"No, no, no! I think I’ll pass," he said, covering his lower body and declining Jiang Yu's generous offer.
"What a pity! The art world might just lose a master," Jiang Yu lamented with a tone of mock sorrow.
Cai Bi decided it was best to keep his distance from this brainwashing maniac; who knew what he might become if he fell under his influence?
Clang.
Lu Fei Fan sheathed his Zhan Dao and let out a sigh; he had just finished warming up when the path ahead opened up.
Adi, who had been swinging his legs on a branch, jumped down and walked up to Lu Fei Fan, ready to lead the way again.
"Damn it! I refuse to believe this; why can't we go this way?" Jiu Ye grumbled stubbornly as he headed toward the path that Adi had just avoided. Just as he was about to step forward, Da Fu Ge grabbed him and squatted down. He took off a hand grenade he was wearing and tossed it ahead. The grenade rolled forward and suddenly came to a stop after a while. The once solid surface of the tree began to rot slowly and sink down. Following that, the tree trunks twisted like giant pythons and crushed the grenade.
Boom!
The hand grenade shattered the thick tree trunks that resembled giant serpents.
"This is the natural trap of the Green Mist Rainforest," Da Fu Ge explained. "The creatures here rely on their instincts to hunt."
Jiu Ye glanced at Adi with a complex expression. Adi pointed to a nearby trunk where many white bones of animals remained, and then she stopped, not moving any further.
"This child seems to have a unique sensitivity to this forest," Qin Qin suddenly remarked as she stood beside Lu Fei Fan.
"Yes, she's different from us," Lu Fei Fan said something that left Qin Qin puzzled.
Fu Qinqin pondered for a while before quickly catching up, and the others followed suit.
The structure of the forest was peculiar; although it was an island, most of it was formed by tree trunks. The ground was supported by these trunks, and many plants grew from the accumulated sand and dust on them.
Standing atop a tall trunk, Lu Fei Fan could see the sea below in several areas. The murky waters occasionally revealed strange fish-like creatures leaping up to drag birds and beasts into the depths, devouring them.
This was the survival rule of this area—a tightly interwoven food chain.
Comparing their map, the group realized they had entered a red danger zone, indicating that the level of peril here was significantly greater than when they first arrived.
"The light is fading," Jiang Yu observed as he looked at the sunlight filtering through the tree gaps. The sunlight had weakened and slanted westward; night was approaching.
"We need to find a safe place to set up camp," Da Fu said, surveying the surroundings. Clearly, camping in this dangerous area would not be an easy task.
Suddenly, a flurry of bird calls broke the tranquil atmosphere of the forest. Adi halted abruptly, signaling everyone to stop. Lu Fei Fan crouched down beside her and made a gesture for silence. Everyone quickly concealed themselves in the foliage. Qin Qin, closest to Lu Fei Fan, crouched down and took out a thermal imaging telescope to scan their surroundings.
After about ten minutes, confirming there were no ambushes in sight, Lu Fei Fan finally signaled for them to stand down. The hidden individuals slowly rose back up.
"What happened?" Lu Fei Fan asked Adi.
Adi seemed a bit frightened as she pointed ahead.
Lu Fei Fan drew the Lie Hound Specialized Energy Revolver and quietly made his way forward to investigate.
The others remained alert in their original position. After a while, Lu Fei Fan jumped out from behind a tree and signaled to the group. The horse team and Da Fu quickly moved up, while Da Biao protected Adi as they advanced. Jiu Ye and Jia Jia brought up the rear, with Jiang Yu seemingly indifferent, humming a tune and doodling in a notebook.
“What’s going on?” the horse team asked upon seeing Lu Fei Fan.
Lu Fei Fan frowned and gestured for them to check it out themselves.
Jiu Ye rushed ahead to take a look, only to be met with a gruesome sight!
Countless severed limbs lay scattered on the ground, as if some wild beast had torn them apart. The crimson blood stained the entire area, and the stench of entrails attracted numerous birds and beasts, which reluctantly departed upon noticing human presence.
This was clearly a temporary campsite of a Special Operations Team. If nothing else, this mercenary group had chosen to camp here, but they had evidently suffered an attack, resulting in total annihilation of all members.
Two of the team members were gruesomely impaled on tree branches, their deaths too brutal to behold.
“Was this done by humans or an attack from a Beast?” Jiu Ye looked at the scene and immediately turned away to retch.
Cai Bi donned gloves and carefully examined the bodies, while Jiang Yu rummaged through the mercenaries' weapons and equipment at the campsite.
Adi hid in Qin Qin's embrace, seemingly unwilling to witness such horror.
After a while, Cai Bi and Jiang Yu returned with their findings.
“It looks like they were attacked by some kind of ferocious beast. It seems the attackers had a good understanding of human anatomy; most deaths were quick and brutal, followed by dismemberment,” Cai Bi reported from a medical perspective before removing his gloves and discarding them.
“None of the members had time to sound an alarm or fire back. The attackers were incredibly swift. According to my earlier examination, there were still two veterans in this team with foundational training in cultivation, yet they all fell. Their ammunition was full, and safety mechanisms were disengaged,” Jiang Yu added.
“This is nothing short of a massacre,” Da Biao remarked as he surveyed the scene.
“We shouldn’t linger here,” Da Fu Ge suggested, feeling it best to leave this place.
“Erase our traces and retreat,” the leader of the cavalry commanded decisively. There was no need to bury the bodies of those mercenaries; after all, this place was called the No-Bone Graveyard, and the Rainforest would take care of the corpses thoroughly.
As the group left the murder scene, the earlier teasing atmosphere had vanished. Each member became acutely aware of the looming danger, except for Jiang Yu, who remained calm, humming a tune.
That night, they set up camp beneath a large tree. Due to the recent violence, the cavalrymen refrained from lighting a fire.
Everyone chose a corner to spread out their sleeping bags and quietly munched on their rations.
Lu Fei Fan handed a compressed energy bar to Adi, who accepted it and began to eat. It was evident that she wasn’t particularly picky about food.
“Do you know what killed those people?” Lu Fei Fan asked her.
“Gods,” Adi replied simply.
Jiu Ye, who happened to be nearby, couldn’t help but express his disbelief. “Well then, I have some serious firepower in my hands. I’ve never seen what a god looks like, but if it dares to go against us, I’ll definitely blow it to smithereens.” He patted the Energy Rocket Launcher he had carried all the way; this weapon could penetrate a heavy Armor tank with a single shot, making it their most reliable companion in terms of safety.
