Without the intervention of Lian Qingzong, Bai Qi and his mercenaries were unable to withstand Li Tiezui's ambush.
His mercenaries were skilled and cunning, employing a fluid combat style that caught Bai Qi and his men off guard.
Ayou, accompanied by a few others, moved stealthily through the forest, taking down two of Li Tiezui's subordinates. Gritting his teeth, Li Tiezui ordered the remaining men to hurl a large number of explosives in that direction. The resulting explosion forced the woman out from her hiding place among the trees.
As she leaped down from the tree trunk, a dagger in her hand flew toward Li Tiezui with a whistling sound.
Li Tiezui barely managed to dodge it just as two knives, propelled by a rush of air, sliced through the space. Clang! Clang! Clang! He deflected the two incoming knives, narrowly escaping behind cover, with one knife clenched between his teeth and two more in each hand held by Jia Jia.
He exchanged knife throws with Ayou; their blades collided mid-air with sparks flying, while others missed and embedded themselves in nearby surfaces, causing vibrations and sounds of impact on the ground and buildings.
When Ayou ran out of knives, she lunged toward Jia Jia. Jia Jia threw her remaining knife, aiming to deflect it. However, the knife exploded mid-air instead, creating a loud bang!
This forced Ayou to roll away in a panic and reassess Jia Jia.
Jia Jia no longer held a knife; instead, she had two hand grenades!
As the grenades were thrown toward her, Ayou executed a somersault to evade them. With her only remaining dagger whistling through the air toward Jia Jia's throat, if it hit, it would surely be fatal.
Bang! Bang—
Clang!
Li Tiezui raised his energy pistol, and two bullets struck the dagger mid-flight.
Ayou's figure disappeared into one of the houses in the village, leaving no trace.
Jia Jia and Li Tiezui exchanged a knowing glance, their silent understanding evident. Such coordination required little in the way of words; comrades on the same front were meant to operate this way.
Meanwhile, Jiu Ye had become a suppressive fire point against the mercenaries attempting to counterattack the village. A machine gun was mounted on a large tree, unleashing a barrage of fire into the village. Many houses were pockmarked with deep craters from the relentless gunfire.
Several mercenaries were struck directly by ricocheting bullets, collapsing to the ground with cries of agony. More bullets whizzed past, embedding themselves in their bodies, silencing them with muffled gasps.
The cavalry charged into the village with standard Energy Submachine Guns and Da Fu Ge in pairs, while Jiang Yu and Cai Bi circled around the perimeter.
Bai Qi knew that their position could not hold for long. He rushed over to the Bodhi Tree Demon, setting up a special device along the chain that bound it. With a loud bang, the device secured itself to the demon's head.
The Bodhi Tree Demon let out a pained howl as it was struck by the metal pipe-like apparatus, producing strange sounds that were almost comical.
Emerald green liquid flowed through the metal pipe into another pipe as thick as an arm. Once filled, Bai Qi switched to an empty pipe and filled it as well. He then stowed two filled metal pipes containing Source of Life into his backpack and waved to signal behind him.
Ayou quickly followed with two mercenaries as they retreated from another side of the village. The sounds of screams began to rise as they stopped momentarily, and soon after, the cavalry along with Li Tiezui entered the village.
Li Tiezui kicked aside a corpse and spat on the ground. Another battle had cost him two brothers; only three remained with him now.
He had to focus on calming and regrouping his team for their return mission. If they failed to secure Source of Life this time, it would spell disaster for them.
Fortunately, Jiu Ye and Jiang Yu had managed to control the fallen Bodhi Tree Demon by the pond. The metal pipe continued to drain Source of Life from it, and its wails had diminished significantly compared to before.
In her embrace, the indifferent victor of the internal struggle, no matter who struck first, Yun Kui felt no warmth towards them.
Li Tiezui signaled his team members to fetch two metal cans for drinking water, filling them with the Source of Life that flowed from the Metal Pipe. The Fei Hu Battle Team also sent Jiu Ye and Jia Jia to find a few water bottles, filling four in total, when suddenly someone yanked away the metal can!
Everyone looked up to see a bare-chested man standing by the Bodhi Tree Demon. This man was Hao, his tattooed skin shimmering with mystical patterns.
In an instant, everyone drew their weapons, all aimed at this Forest Child who had appeared silently beside the Bodhi Tree Demon.
Hao discarded the tube that had been siphoning the Source of Life, reaching out to press energy onto the Bodhi Tree Demon. Slowly, the wound that had been pierced by the pipe began to close.
Hao seemed unafraid of gunfire as he walked over and lifted Bodhi Tree Demon out of harm's way. The creature let out a mournful sound.
Yun Kui, holding the Tree Demon, asked, “Where is the clan leader?”
Hao looked up towards the fallen Totem Tree in the center of the village, engulfed in flames. The clan leader was likely in grave danger. He hesitated, unsure how to answer the girl he liked.
“Dead,” he replied honestly.
With sorrowful eyes, Yun Kui surveyed her village, devastated by merciless flames. This was her hometown, where she had grown up filled with joyful memories. But now, all that remained were raging fires and countless corpses.
For her, this was an unforgettable scene. Returning to the Luo Yuluo Clan Leader, many of her childhood companions were no longer alive.
Lu Fei Fan, along with Da Biao and Fu Qinqin, entered the village. They traversed through the wreckage until they reached the pond's edge. There lay the Bodhi Tree Demon, its lower half destroyed and slumped against the pond, mourning something as the surrounding trees resonated with its sorrow.
For some reason, a hint of desolation washed over Lu Fei Fan.
“Dog San, go, set up the cannon again. I haven’t extracted enough of the Source of Life yet,” Li Tiezui commanded one of his subordinates as he turned around.
The subordinate immediately turned and, along with others, began to set up the cannon. The metal pipe used for extracting liquid was once again reloaded into the cannon’s chamber, and they aimed the barrel at the Bodhi Tree Demon.
The Tree Demon lay there, wailing like a fish on a chopping board, helpless against the impending doom. Its mournful cries echoed in the air, but nothing could change the fate of its kind facing extinction at human hands. In distant memories, its ancestors had fought fiercely against humans, but their entire race gradually faded into the annals of history. Now it seemed it was its turn.
Even if it survived, there was no way to revive its race; solitude was the greatest enemy for such long-lived beings.
“Fire!” Li Tiezui ordered.
“Stop!” Yun Kui rushed forward, extending her hands to block the cannon’s muzzle.
“Don’t meddle in my business, or I swear I’ll blow you away!” Li Tiezui shouted angrily, drawing his gun and aiming it at this reckless girl. He was not joking; he clearly had a ruthless streak.
From previous actions, it was evident that Li Tiezui sometimes acted without principles, especially when someone obstructed his goals.
Hao stepped behind Yun Kui. At this moment, only he and Yun Kui remained in the village, along with the Bodhi Tree Demon. Little did he know that if Yura hadn’t given her life to save him before dying, he might not even be standing here now.
These humans had ravaged their home with gunfire and chaos, leaving nothing but destruction in their wake. It seemed that apart from life itself, there was nothing else left for them to hold onto.
He silently stood beside Yun Kui, declaring his stance through his actions.
"You better step aside, or I really will pull the trigger!" Li Tiezui aimed his Energy Pistol at the girl, his intention to fire was unmistakable.
Suddenly, someone reached out and pressed down on his gun—it was the cavalry.
Just as Li Tiezui was about to question what was happening, the Bodhi Tree Demon let out a piercing howl. It struggled to rise from the ground, and the invisible pond began to churn as if something were about to emerge. With a series of loud thuds, countless Tree Vines burst forth, wrapping around the Bodhi Tree Demon. In no time, its mangled body fused with the vines, and it grew taller, roaring furiously at the humans below.
Yun Kui seemed to understand the Bodhi Tree Demon's intentions and quickly turned around, shouting to stop it.
"Don't! Stop right now!"
But the Bodhi Tree Demon continued to roar in anger, slamming its Tree Vines down towards Lu Fei Fan and the others. The Fei Hu Battle Team scrambled to evade, but one of Li Tiezui's teammates was struck and cried out in pain.
Furious, Li Tiezui rolled on the ground to grab a Sniper Rifle. He crouched down and aimed it at the enraged Bodhi Tree Demon.
"You're asking for it; I'll send you straight to hell!" Li Tiezui shouted as he squeezed the trigger.
"Don't!" Yun Kui turned to Li Tiezui and yelled.
But just then, a Tree Vine came crashing down, colliding with the speeding energy sniper round. Meanwhile, Lu Fei Fan leaped onto a rooftop, his large-caliber Lie Hound already charged and ready. The rampaging Bodhi Tree Demon wildly swung its Tree Vines; however, Lu Fei Fan had no intention of harming anyone—his actions were merely meant to provoke!
Lu Fei Fan raised his Lie Hound and aimed it at the demon's peculiar pod-like head, where the Emerald Green liquid swayed—it was the Source of Life.
A howl erupted from the demon.
The Bodhi Tree Demon let out a sound resembling a cry.
Boom!
The Lie Hound, having been raised for a long time, finally pulled the trigger.
The Energy Bullet surged forward, accurately striking the Bodhi Tree Demon's head.
The Bodhi Tree Demon shuddered violently, its emerald green head beginning to crack open like a broken pot, with emerald green Source of Life pouring down like a waterfall.
Howl—
It appeared to be in great pain, countless vines thrashing about wildly. Clearly, that shot had not ended its life; it only intensified its suffering.
On the ground, after the Ice Spirit Tree was shot, Yun Kui stood dazed. A vine rose from the Azure Pond and fell toward her head. Lu Fei Fan descended swiftly, lifting her and landing on the roof of a house. In his hands, the Lie Hound aimed once more at the Bodhi Tree Demon’s head, which now had a hole gushing forth its Source of Life.
Yun Kui felt an overwhelming sadness for the Ice Spirit Tree. She suddenly realized how heartbroken she was—Patriarch Grandpa's sacrifice, Gui Luo's sacrifice, the Totem Tree's sacrifice, and all those companions who had sacrificed themselves to protect the village and the Ice Spirit Tree. In that moment, she felt that her so-called guardianship had become utterly meaningless.
