“Peter Wang wants to talk to me. Am I getting laid off?”
“You're overthinking it again,” Zhang Xiaohu replied casually, his fingers flying over the keyboard.
Xiao Mei glanced at Zhang Xiaohu, who was focused on writing code, feeling a mix of emotions.
Something felt off. Big companies were all about “cost-cutting and efficiency” lately, which sounded like a euphemism for being unfriendly to employees.
But after all, it was a big company. As a mere developer, surely they wouldn’t… do it so quickly? Xiao Mei silently reassured herself.
However, as expected, ten minutes later, she found herself sitting face-to-face with Peter Wang in the conference room. His expression was as blank as a template, revealing no hint of emotion.
“The company is currently optimizing personnel…” Peter Wang began lightly. Xiao Mei's heart sank; she knew what was coming—she was indeed getting laid off.
“Your recent work has been somewhat delayed, and the company has decided to eliminate your position after careful consideration.” He spoke without any fluctuation in tone, as if he were simply discussing the weather.
Xiao Mei stared at the table, trying hard not to show her disappointment. In reality, she had already thought of three thousand ways to vent her frustration.
She hadn’t expected her “Large Company dream” to end so abruptly. Five years ago, she joined this company full of dreams and never complained despite the hard work. Now, with a casual mention of “optimization,” they were pushing her out.
“Alright then…” Xiao Mei managed to force out those two words. Yet inside, she felt a flicker of relief—at least there was N+2 severance pay.
Back at her workstation, her mind was blank. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard for a long moment before she finally remembered what she needed to do—pack her things and leave.
"Master?" Zhang Xiaohu leaned out from his seat, concern etched on his face. "How are you? Are you okay?"
"It's over," Xiaomei replied with a resigned shrug.
"What?" Zhang Xiaohu's eyes widened in disbelief. "You got optimized? That's not scientific! You're the core of our team!"
"There's nothing I can do; I was in a 'non-core position,'" Xiaomei said with a self-deprecating smile, feeling a bit more at ease inside. It was already done; there was no point in begging them to keep her.
Zhang Xiaohu patted her shoulder reassuringly. "Don't worry, Senior Sister. I know quite a few people in the industry. I'll ask around for you."
"Thanks," Xiaomei smiled back at him, warmth spreading in her heart.
What had happened was done, and crying wouldn't help; it was better to stay positive.
She took out her phone and dialed A Bao's number. It didn't take long for A Bao's familiar voice to come through the line. "Xiaomei, what's up?"
"A Bao, I got laid off," Xiaomei said, her voice tinged with a hint of grievance but mostly resignation.
There was a brief silence on the other end before A Bao burst into laughter. "Haha, no worries! If you're not working, I'll support you!"
Xiaomei's mood lifted instantly, and she couldn't help but smile. "You'll support me? Great! Then I'll go shopping every day—don't you dare complain!"
A Bao laughed even more heartily, "You can spend as much as you want! Don't say just tens of thousands a month; even millions are fine by me!"
"Then I won't hold back," came the reply.
A Bao's carefree tone made Xiao Mei feel for a moment that losing her job wasn't such a big deal after all. But just as those words left her lips, A Bao's mother jumped in immediately, "A Bao! Your little girlfriend doesn't even have a job; how can she be worthy of you?!"
The sharp voice of A Bao's mother came through the phone, and Xiao Mei suddenly felt overwhelmed.
