Xiaomei frowned slightly as she walked toward the break room, a flicker of caution crossing her mind. She had come to understand Peter thoroughly. His style had always been aloof, never considering the feelings of someone like her, a grassroots employee. Now, he was approaching her for some reason that clearly stemmed from necessity.
“Go ahead,” Xiaomei replied coldly.
“The company has encountered some troubles recently. A new product we were preparing has been delayed due to technical issues, and clients are pulling their orders, leading to significant losses for the company,” Peter said urgently, his voice tinged with a hint of desperation. “I hope you can come back to help; after all, you know that area best.”
Xiaomei felt a cold laugh rise within her. During her time of unemployment, she had constantly thought about this man's betrayal. Back then, she had no confidence and allowed Peter and the other leaders to manipulate her at will. Now, he stood before her seeking help, seemingly trying to appeal to their past friendship, but he had forgotten that she was no longer the girl who could be easily controlled.
“Sorry, I’m no longer with that company,” Xiaomei said firmly and coldly. “I won’t go back.”
“But you know the original company is in a very dangerous situation right now. If the problems aren’t resolved soon, they could face layoffs or even bankruptcy,” Peter continued to persuade her, anxiety evident in his eyes. “I really need your help.”
A surge of anger coursed through Xiaomei; he wasn’t here to apologize but rather to leverage her abilities. She recalled the colleagues he had ruthlessly laid off in the past and the disappointment and anger she had felt then, making her disdain for him even stronger.
“Peter, the truth is you all fired me without considering my value to the company. Now that you’re in trouble, you remember me?” Xiaomei retorted disdainfully. “Am I only valuable when you need me?”
“I… I know this is unfair, but this time it’s really different. Without you, we can’t salvage this situation!” Peter Wang’s voice grew more urgent.
Xiaomei shook her head slightly, having already made up her mind. She now had a new life and new opportunities; she was no longer willing to be entangled in past workplace dramas. The endless sense of loss was gone; she could finally live for herself.
“Sorry, I’ve found a new job,” Xiaomei said coldly. “I don’t want to face those pointless struggles again; it has nothing to do with your so-called collaboration.”
“Are you really that heartless?”
"Yes, I am ruthless," Xiaomei said, no longer hiding her emotions. There was a hint of relief in her tone. "I deserve a better future, not to be used by you all."
"Xiaomei, you really disappoint me," Peter Wang replied coldly. "I don't think you'll have a good outcome."
"I'm not going to be threatened by you," Xiaomei laughed, a smirk of satisfaction crossing her face, though inside she felt completely liberated.
As she listened to Peter angrily hang up the phone, a wave of exhilaration washed over her. The shackles of the past had vanished; now she had the ability to pursue her dreams without relying on anyone else.
Turning to leave the break room, Zhang Xiaohu happened to walk by. Seeing her excited expression, he couldn't help but ask, "Sorry, I overheard the call. How did your conversation with Peter go?"
"Nothing much, I turned down his request," Xiaomei replied with a slight smile, feeling joyful. "I don't want to go back and serve them anymore."
