Long Yuan was momentarily taken aback, as if he had heard similar words from her before in his memories.
He frowned, a wave of inexplicable annoyance rising within him as he gently pushed her away. "Such words shouldn't be said casually."
Yu Xiaoman blinked her big, watery eyes, looking at him with an innocent expression. "Why can't they be said casually? My brothers say them all the time."
Long Yuan huffed in displeasure. "How is that possible?"
Unless her brothers were as uniquely structured in their minds as she was.
Before long, Yu Xiaoman turned his "unless" into an "absolutely."
"When Second Yu is short on money, he tells Big Brother 'To pledge oneself.' When Big Brother wants to eat, he tells Third Brother 'To pledge oneself.' And when Third Brother wants to fight crickets—"
"He tells you 'To pledge oneself!'" Long Yuan quickly completed her sentence, feeling helpless about the Yu family's peculiar way of speaking.
Now he understood that her phrase "To pledge oneself" was as ordinary as greetings like "Have you eaten?" or "Good morning." Perhaps she didn't even know the true meaning of those four words.
Yu Xiaoman nodded earnestly, looking as if she was discussing something of utmost importance. "Third Brother says it's the most formal way to express gratitude to others."
Long Yuan nearly stumbled at this revelation, feeling dizzy from the absurdity of it all.
Wiping away the remnants of her tears, Yu Xiaoman looked at him with hopeful eyes and asked, "A Yuan, would you be willing to accompany me to the Mortal Realm?"
"I wouldn't." The answer came out of his mouth without a second thought.
Upon hearing this, Yu Xiaoman resembled a deflated balloon, slowly lowering her head. Her long eyelashes fluttered like tiny fans, casting shadows on her eyelids.
Long Yuan glanced at his temporarily dry left shoulder and then at Yu Xiaoman's pitiful appearance. His heart softened, and he couldn't help but sigh, "I really can't do anything with you. Come with me." As he spoke, he reached out and gently took Yu Xiaoman's hand.
Yu Xiaoman was momentarily stunned, as if she couldn't believe this was real. She felt the warmth of his hand turn from warm to hot, a current of electricity spreading from her palm throughout her body.
This strange sensation made her heart race like a startled deer, and soon she seemed to forget everything else; if someone were to ask her who Tian Peng Marshal was at that moment, she might not even remember clearly.
Long Yuan led her through flowers and trees toward Penglai Island to meet Tai Shang Lao Jun.
Along the way, Yu Xiaoman chirped like a cheerful little bird, chattering non-stop, while Long Yuan smiled slightly at the corners of his mouth, occasionally responding. To his surprise, he felt particularly relaxed.
When they entered, Tai Shang Lao Jun already knew their purpose. He stroked his long beard and smiled faintly. Without waiting for Long Yuan to speak up, he took out a mirror from his robe and lightly swept it with a feather duster. Instantly, an image appeared—a three-dimensional scene of Gao Lao Zhuang from all angles.
"See that? He looks more comfortable than anyone else and is quite fortunate in love," Long Yuan said, pointing at the image in the mirror as he spoke to Yu Xiaoman.
Yu Xiaoman looked at the scene in the mirror and finally felt a bit relieved. She extended her finger to point at the image and asked, "Is he getting married?"
Long Yuan nodded without hesitation. "So do you still want to find him?"
Yu Xiaoman furrowed her brows in thought and replied seriously, "Second Yu said that being a mistress has even less future than being a concubine..."
Hearing this, Long Yuan nearly spat out a mouthful of blood. He began to deeply doubt the teaching standards of the private tutors in the East Sea; it truly wasn't easy to raise such a family.
"And besides, it's wrong to ruin someone else's happiness," Yu Xiaoman added firmly.
Long Yuan felt that if this continued, Lao Jun would likely categorize him as one of the oddities as well. So he hurriedly thanked him and pulled Yu Xiaoman away quickly.
As they walked side by side to the exit of Heaven, Long Yuan was about to ride on a cloud when Yu Xiaoman suddenly yanked him down from the sky.
"What’s wrong now?" Long Yuan said coldly as he looked at her. He couldn't quite understand why he was still upset about her wanting to pledge herself to Tian Peng; it felt like a heavy stone was lodged in his heart.
Yu Xiaoman's cheeks flushed with two rosy hues, resembling the evening glow on the horizon. She hesitantly replied, "I... I can't ride the clouds."
"Then how did you get up here?" Long Yuan asked, puzzled. Surely, it wasn't the Emperor who sent someone to fetch her?
"It was my brother who asked a friend of a friend of a friend to bring me up," she explained. She had intended to go "mourn" Tian Peng Marshal but couldn't get past the Southern Heavenly Gate. If she hadn't run into Long Yuan, she would have still been stuck at the Heavenly Soldier checkpoint.
"Whoever brought you here, just go find them," he said dismissively.
Yu Xiaoman glanced back at her path and shook her head helplessly. " Wandering Heavenly General brought me here and then went off to patrol the heavens."
" Wandering Heavenly? You mean Wandering Heavenly brought you to the heavenly realm?" Long Yuan was taken aback, his eyes widening in surprise.
"Yes, do you know him?" she asked.
"Well... sort of..." It was more than just knowing; in fact, he was her future brother-in-law.
Yu Xiaoman fell silent, gazing at him with eyes that resembled a puppy longing for its owner's affection.
Seeing her pitiful expression softened Long Yuan's heart. He bent down gently and picked her up, leaping onto the clouds with ease.
