The mountain road was bumpy, and as I sat in the back seat with Liu Er, my stomach churned, bringing my breakfast up to my throat.
If it weren't for the fact that we had been captured, I would have been quite excited; after all, it was my first time riding in a metal vehicle with four wheels.
Since being caught last night, those people hadn’t treated us cruelly or tortured us; instead, they were surprisingly polite. They were especially attentive to Liu Er, taking care of her in every possible way.
After a night of tossing and turning, everyone closed their eyes for a brief rest. As soon as dawn broke, they started driving us away again.
Interestingly, during a moment when everyone was busy in the morning, Guan Laotou crept over to me and whispered, “Kid, where did you put the jade pendant I gave you earlier?”
When we first entered the secret passage, Guan Laotou had indeed thrown me a jade pendant called Dragon and Phoenix Presenting Auspiciousness. It looked like an antique, and seeing how serious Guan Laotou was at the time, I wrapped it in cloth and placed it in my Qiankun Bag.
“I threw it away…” I replied curtly. I held a deep disdain for someone who would sell out their friends to save themselves.
Guan Laotou's expression changed dramatically as he grabbed my arm, his voice rising several pitches, drawing the attention of those nearby.
“Where did you throw it?”
Seeing Guan Laotou so anxious about the pendant brought me an inexplicable sense of satisfaction. I shifted my thoughts and said, “I tossed it in a forest.”
Guan Laotou asked suspiciously, “Really?”
I scoffed sarcastically, “With someone like you giving it to me, I’d feel dirty just holding onto it…”
Guan Laotou's face turned pale and then flushed with anger as he grabbed my collar with one hand while clenching his fist with the other.
Seeing his stance didn’t frighten me at all. I shouted at the top of my lungs, “Help! Someone’s hitting me!”
At my shout, everyone stopped what they were doing and looked over. The man glanced at Liu Er's expression before turning back and angrily shouted, “Since the matter is settled, don’t create any more trouble for me. Get lost!”
Only then did Guan Laotou force a smile and try to appease him before leaving reluctantly, glancing back several times with resentment in his murky eyes.
I looked at Liu Er’s thin lips pressed tightly together and her face showing a hint of stubbornness. My heart felt heavy. How could a girl of only twelve or thirteen years endure so much hardship?
I extended my arms and pulled Liu Er into my embrace, speaking softly, "Liu Er, it's all Ling Feng's fault. Otherwise, you wouldn't have to go with them..."
Liu Er tilted her head against my shoulder, a faint smile tugging at her lips, but it was too forced, making my eyes sting with tears. " Ling Feng, I know you care for Liu Er... You've helped me escape time and again. If it weren't for me being a burden, Ling Feng wouldn't have fallen into their hands. Besides, you see the situation now; they treat me quite well... This way, I can save Ling Feng once more."
I clenched my other hand into a fist and slammed it down on the seat, hating my own helplessness.
Liu Er took my hand and blew on it gently. " Ling Feng, don't worry. As long as I'm useful to them, they won't harm me... Just trust me. Once I gain strength in the future, I'll come find you and taste Dad's cooking. Grandpa's food used to be terrible..."
A drop of icy tear rolled down my hand, yet it felt like scalding lava, seeping into my bones and making it hard to breathe.
The car swayed and bumped along for what felt like an eternity before finally reaching a county town.
There were eight of us in total. We booked four standard rooms. Liu Er shared a room with that woman, while I was in a room with that man.
Staring out at the dim streetlights beyond the window, despite the bumpy ride, sleep eluded me. My mind was filled with images of Liu Er's dull eyes and pale face.
Perhaps it was due to his boldness or perhaps he felt invulnerable; the man didn't drug me or tie me up. He simply lay on the bed fully clothed, occasionally letting out loud snores.
I tossed and turned until I finally made up my mind to take a risk. If I could subdue the leading man and woman, I was confident I could escape with Liu Er.
Could I really just watch Liu Er be taken away? Was I still a man if I did nothing?
Having made up my mind, I cast aside all distractions and silently recited the Heart Sutra.
Time slipped by quietly; at three forty in the morning, it was the deepest part of night when people sleep most soundly.
Indeed, the man's snores grew short and loud.
I pulled out the Ruyi Stick from my Qiankun Bag. With a sudden burst of energy, I swung the long stick directly at the man's legs.
My aim wasn't to kill; as long as this strike landed, it would be nearly impossible for him to chase after us.
The stick merely struck Simmons' mattress, sending feathers flying.
The man rolled over and ducked under the bed, reaching out to turn on the room light.
I was still reeling from the surprise when the sudden brightness temporarily blinded me. Seizing the moment, the man slapped the mattress with one hand, propelling himself into the air and kicking horizontally toward me.
I had no choice but to retract my long stick and sweep it horizontally in an attempt to force him back.
Seeing this, the man executed a backflip in mid-air, landing on the bed with a mocking smile on his face. "Monk, have a little patience. You know to wait until now to strike."
As the saying goes, "Every tool has its strengths and weaknesses." The hotel room was too low and cluttered. Using the Ruyi Stick was indeed inconvenient.
I felt a bit anxious; he was clearly an experienced fighter, displaying such vigilance.
So I put away the Ruyi Stick and faced him with the Luohan Fist, complemented by the Great Shift technique.
The man had a muscular build and appeared robust; he likely practiced external hard qigong.
I felt as if my punches were hitting a wall when they connected with him.
Fortunately, the Great Shift Technique emphasized agility and evasion, so I wasn't at a complete disadvantage.
However, after just a few dozen exchanges, everything in the room had been smashed to bits.
In the stillness of the night, such noise was enough to wake up everyone in the building.
Sure enough, it wasn't long before the door was kicked open forcefully. A woman burst in with Liu Er and four others.
The already small room was instantly crowded.
Seeing Liu Er distracted me for just a moment, and I received a heavy punch to my abdomen. I staggered back several steps before regaining my balance, curling up like a boiled shrimp while clutching my stomach. My mouth was filled with bitterness.
I couldn't believe it; was that a human-shaped robot?
The man seemed to be addicted to the thrill of the fight, raising his fists and ready to charge forward. Seeing this, Liu Er broke free from the woman's grip and ran in front of me, spreading her arms wide. She said coldly, "Don't forget what you promised me."
The man tilted his head and laughed, "It's quite impressive that someone your age has managed to withstand so many moves from me, Sai King Kong Li Yong."
Though it sounded like a compliment, Li Yong's expression was one of disdain.
With red eyes and a stubborn neck, I retorted, "If you have the guts, come again... Whoever is afraid of dying is a coward..."
" Ling Feng, what are you doing? Is showing off really manly?" Liu Er suddenly turned and yelled at me.
I was momentarily stunned, taking a long time to process her words. Liu Er threw herself into my arms, crying loudly as she whispered in my ear, " Ling Feng, I want you to live. I'm at Holy Demon Sect, waiting for you to save me."
Her tears soaked my clothes. I held Liu Er tightly in my embrace and whispered back, "Okay!"
