I clenched my fists, staring at the audacious Chang Lili. Although I never hit women, this one was simply asking for it. Gritting my teeth, I said, "As long as you don't cause trouble, we can coexist peacefully. Otherwise..."
"What will you do? How can you possibly threaten me?" Chang Lili twirled a lock of her hair and gracefully approached me, her delicate hand resting on my shoulder as she smiled.
The strong scent of her perfume hit me, but as I got closer, I could detect the unpleasant odor masked beneath it, creating an indescribable mixture.
I brushed her hand away and replied coldly, "What can I do? You'll find out when you regret it."
"Giggling..." Chang Lili laughed as if she had heard a joke, her body shaking with mirth. Finally, she placed a hand on her waist and said, "Aren't monks supposed to be compassionate? Ling Feng, can you really bear to trouble a weak woman like me?"
Suddenly, the scene before me blurred, and my mind felt hazy. Just then, Fo Zhang chirped from the tree, snapping me back to reality.
I bit my middle finger and forcefully pressed it against Chang Lili's forehead.
Surprised by my quick recovery, she clutched her forehead and glared at me. "Ling Feng, how cruel you are."
The blood from my middle finger was a potent force against ordinary people. However, seeing the smoke rising from her forehead and hearing the sizzling sound of her flesh melting made me shout, "What exactly are you?"
Chang Lili seemed to have used some kind of magic; when she raised her head again, she had returned to her normal color and wore a smile. Gone was the earlier look of pain. "I didn't expect this monk to have some composure; you actually managed to evade my Illusion Technique. But I’ve noted this little trick of yours. I'll settle the score another day."
Seeing that Chang Lili seemed ready to flee, I quickly activated the Great Shift Technique to block her path. "We need to clarify things now; otherwise, you won't be leaving."
With that, I threw a punch straight at her face. To my surprise, she anticipated my decisive move and swiftly retreated with a light push from her toes.
Her face showed anger as she exclaimed, "Don't push your luck! When I was out here making a name for myself, you weren't even around!" With that, she curled her fingers into claws and lunged at me, her long nails sharp as daggers.
"This village is under my protection; causing trouble here is unacceptable," I warned coldly.
"How naive! Do you think you're Buddha? You can't control what happens here just because you want to!" Chang Lili's movements were peculiar and incredibly fast; she became almost like an afterimage. Even with my heightened senses, I still took a few hits from her claws that left stinging wounds.
I pulled out the Ruyi Stick from my Qiankun Bag and swung it horizontally to create distance between us. As the saying goes: "An inch longer is stronger; an inch shorter is more dangerous." I wielded the Ruyi Stick with fierce momentum.
Seeing my defenses were tight as a drum, Chang Lili laughed. "I didn’t realize you had some skills after all. But it's getting late; I'm going back to rest."
Before she finished speaking, she lunged at me again. Caught off guard, I could only raise the Ruyi Stick horizontally to block her sharp nails.
Little did I know that Chang Lili was quite cunning. In mid-air, she flipped over and landed on the Ruyi Stick, using the rebound force to swiftly disappear into the woods.
I took a few steps back to steady myself, and when I looked again, there was no trace of Chang Lili anywhere.
I cursed under my breath, initially planning to have Fo Zhang lure out Chang Lili to probe her background. However, not only did I fail to uncover anything, but I also ended up tossing and turning for most of the night.
I whistled, and there was a rustling in the woods as Fo Zhang jumped onto my shoulder. I pulled a banana from my Qiankun Bag and rewarded Fo Zhang.
I hadn’t paid attention earlier and almost fell into Chang Lili’s trap. Thankfully, Fo Zhang managed to wake me up; otherwise, the consequences would have been dire.
I thought to myself that I was still too young and lacked vigilance. But then I remembered that I was currently in the village, keeping an eye on Chang Lili, so nothing major should happen.
It was just frustrating to have spent most of the night with nothing to show for it.
The next morning, I was awakened by the sound of rain pattering outside. I poked my head out from under the covers; a cool breeze rushed in. This autumn rain brought a chill, and indeed the temperature had dropped significantly.
Still uneasy about Shen Tao’s family, I quickly got dressed and ran over to their house. When I entered, the family was busy preparing breakfast.
Chang Lili looked clean and fresh today, without any makeup on; she resembled a college student. She was helping serve pickled vegetables and greeted me with a smile, “Ling Feng! Have you eaten breakfast? If not, come join us; it’s just a matter of adding another bowl and chopsticks.” She appeared just like a housewife.
Today, Chang Lili wore jeans paired with a short-sleeved shirt, her hair tied up in a high ponytail. She looked completely different from yesterday. I examined her closely; there wasn’t even a hint of any mark on her forehead. While I pondered this, Shen Tao tugged at my hand playfully and said, “It’s well-known that my sister-in-law is beautiful. If you keep looking at her like that, I might get jealous.”
I chuckled and replied, “I can’t handle such a stunning beauty like your sister-in-law.”
After finishing breakfast together, Chang Lili surprisingly shed her previous arrogance and diligently went to help wash the dishes in the kitchen.
Seeing that Chang Lili wasn’t around, I took the opportunity to chat with Shen Tao and complimented him, “Tao Ge, how did you manage to win over such a beauty like your sister-in-law?”
Shen Tao glanced around mysteriously before whispering, “It’s a secret.”
“Since you’re getting married soon, do you know what’s going on with your sister-in-law’s family?” When Shen Tao didn’t respond, I switched topics.
Shen Tao furrowed his brow and thought for a long time before mumbling, “What does Li Li’s family do? I’ve been to their house before…”
I asked again, “If you’re getting married and your father-in-law’s family doesn’t come to participate, wouldn’t that be an issue?”
Shen Tao remained deep in thought, while Chang Lili entered the main room at some point and said, "Here's the thing. My brother Tao and I plan to hold two wedding ceremonies, one in the city and one in the countryside. This way, both our parents will be satisfied. Right, Tao?"
Chang Lili nudged Shen Tao, who seemed lost in his thoughts. Only then did a spark of awareness return to Shen Tao's eyes as he nodded and smiled, "Whatever my wife says goes."
Seeing that Chang Lili had arrived, I felt it would be inappropriate to ask anything further, so I made an excuse about having matters to attend to at home and left. As I passed by Chang Lili, I whispered, "Don't pull any tricks on me."
Chang Lili laughed and replied, "If I do pull a trick, what can you do about it?"
As I stepped outside, I noticed Shen Tao's mother carrying a bag of something and tossing it into the garbage pile. The open mouth of the bag revealed several dead chickens and ducks.
"Aunt Wang, what are you throwing away? That's quite a big bag," I asked curiously.
Shen Tao's mother sighed regretfully, "Last night, it seems a weasel got into the yard. We lost several chickens and ducks. It's such a shame; they were all at least two pounds each..."
