After leaving the office, I parted ways with Wang Jun. He was off to pursue his happiness, while I had no choice but to return to my dark rented room and reflect on my life. With only two months until the New Year, I couldn’t afford to just sit around and do nothing.
As I walked down the narrow alley after getting off the bus, I found the entrance blocked by a Black Mercedes. Just as I was about to squeeze past it, the driver started honking incessantly.
The blaring horn nearly deafened me. I cursed under my breath, thinking that once I had money, I'd buy a few cars and honk right outside his door to annoy him.
Finally managing to slip through the gap between the car and the alley, I heard a very familiar voice calling out from behind me.
“Ling Feng…”
I turned around and saw Shen Tao, dressed sharply in a suit and sunglasses. How did he know I lived here?
“Tao Ge, how did you find this place? Why don’t you come over for a visit?” I was quite excited; it felt like a chance encounter between He Xiang and Gu Zhi, and I warmly invited him.
Shen Tao declined but pulled me into the Black Mercedes. “Next time, I'll come specifically to visit. This time, I'm here to ask for your help.”
Seeing Shen Tao looking so energetic made me happy for him; it seemed he had moved past his earlier troubles. “Tao Ge, a successful person like you doesn’t need someone like me.”
Shen Tao laughed. “Every field has its experts; this matter requires your expertise. Your place is hard to find! If I hadn’t called back home and asked around, I wouldn’t have located it.”
From what Shen Tao implied, I could guess what was going on. It sounded unfortunate. With a hint of sympathy, I asked, “Tao Ge, did you encounter something dirty again?”
Shen Tao spat lightly. “Can’t you wish for something good for me? This time it’s not me; it’s some strange business happening at Jiang Zong’s place. They’re spending big bucks to hire skilled people. You were the first person that came to mind. Besides, why let someone else benefit? You just got to the city; if this matter is resolved well, you won’t have to live in this dump anymore.”
“Is your boss very wealthy?” I asked excitedly. Could this be my first big break?
Shen Tao held up one hand and then flipped it over. “This is what the boss offered. It all depends on whether you can handle it.”
I puffed out my chest, feeling more confident. “You know my skills well enough, Tao Ge. That ten thousand is as good as mine.”
Shen Tao burst out laughing, spitting some saliva on me in the process. “Ten thousand? Mine is a hundred thousand! The trouble this time involves our boss's precious only son—he’s cherished dearly since he was born late in life. You need to be careful; if anything goes wrong, I can’t protect you.”
His tone became particularly serious with that last part, but the figure of a hundred thousand truly excited me. Understanding the stakes involved, I replied, “Tao Ge, don’t worry. I value my life too much for that. My dad only has me as his son; he doesn’t just focus on money.”
Shen Tao nodded in satisfaction. “Ling Feng, you’re bound to achieve great things in the future.”
Driving the luxurious car, I sat in the passenger seat, admiring the pristine interior. "Tao Ge, this car must be expensive. I wish I could have one too someday."
Shen Tao chuckled, "Ling Feng, with your talent, if you make a name for yourself in H City, in the future, not just a car, even a villa will be within your reach."
"Tao Ge, can you give me some insight into what happened with your boss's son? I’d like to have a better understanding," I said, considering that this was my first opportunity to make a name for myself in H City. I needed to approach it with caution; one casual remark in the boss's social circle could lead to significant gains for someone like me.
Shen Tao frowned slightly. "I don't know the specifics either. Anyway, our Jiang Zong has hired quite a few experts for his son, so you'll have plenty of competitors this time. Whether you can seize this opportunity depends on you."
After leaving the bustling city behind, we drove for a while towards the suburbs and eventually stopped outside an upscale villa area.
Shen Tao rolled down the window and handed a cigarette to the security guard who approached us. "We're going to Jiang Zong's house; you should recognize his car."
The guard accepted the cigarette and confirmed with his walkie-talkie before saluting us and opening the gate.
"Tao Ge, the security here is impressive. How much does it cost per square meter?" I asked curiously, noting how strict the entry was.
Shen Tao smiled. "This is the most famous affluent area in H City. Everyone living here is either extremely wealthy or influential; even if someone has money, they wouldn't qualify to live here."
Why is there such a vast difference between people? I thought about where I currently lived and then looked around here; it was like comparing heaven and earth. My place could barely be considered a doghouse.
I hadn’t noticed much from outside, but stepping inside revealed an entirely different world—bridges, flowing water, fountains, and flowers arranged beautifully.
Shen Tao drove for a bit longer before stopping in front of a garden villa. Wow, this area is enormous! If one wasn't careful, they could easily get lost inside.
As he unbuckled his seatbelt, Shen Tao reminded me, "Ling Feng, when we go in later, speak less and observe more. Show off your skills at the right moment to impress others."
I patted my chest confidently. "Tao Ge, don’t worry; I won’t embarrass you."
After pressing the doorbell, a woman dressed in a white maid uniform opened the door expressionlessly and then followed us inside.
As soon as I stepped through the door, I began surveying the house. The decor was steeped in traditional Chinese style; the redwood furniture displayed priceless artifacts. The design of the hall had some Western elements—a grand chandelier hung from the vaulted ceiling, casting colorful reflections in the sunlight.
Sitting on the sofa was a middle-aged man dressed in a Zhongshan suit, appearing to be around forty years old. His eyes narrowed slightly as he discreetly assessed me. This must be Jiang Zong that Shen Tao had mentioned.
I didn't mind and continued to observe my surroundings, like a naive country bumpkin.
Jiang Zong waved at Shen Tao, his voice calm yet measured, "Is this the expert you found for me? Judging by their age, they probably aren't even older than my daughter."
Shen Tao sensed the displeasure in Jiang Zong's words and bowed slightly, stammering an explanation, "Well... this is..."
With a loud bang, Jiang Zong slammed his hand on the tea table, rising in anger as he prepared to leave.
I cleared my throat and said, "A person's ambition isn't determined by their age. I thought someone like Jiang Zong, a big boss, would be more experienced and not judge others by their appearance. It seems I was mistaken. Farewell..."
As I turned to leave, I noticed Shen Tao's expression had changed dramatically. I subtly signaled him to follow me, but to my surprise, he didn't understand and remained beside Jiang Zong.
"Wait..." Just as I was about to step out the door, Jiang Zong's voice called out to me.
