I reached out and slammed my hands down hard beside where the hidden weapon had struck, sending the fine, hair-like dart flying to the ground.
"The police are already here; you might as well surrender..." I advised with a smile.
Qing Kong Dao Ren showed no sign of fear on his face. "Do you really think they can catch me?"
Looking at Qing Kong Dao Ren's calm demeanor, I felt a jolt of alarm. His confidence was unnerving—did he have some hidden trick or support?
Without hesitation, Qing Kong Dao Ren launched another attack. The originally soft Fu Chen transformed in his hands into a massive white python. The strands of white silk slithered like a snake's flickering tongue.
As I got up to retreat, darkness swirled before my eyes. Damn it, Qing Kong was cunning; the hidden weapon was poisoned.
I fought against the urge to faint, swinging my Ruyi Stick to block the Fu Chen. But in my poisoned state, I had no strength to contend with Qing Kong.
Once the Fu Chen wrapped around my Ruyi Stick, my body—over a hundred pounds—was effortlessly pulled into the air towards Qing Kong...
He followed up with a palm strike aimed at my chest. As I watched his meaty hands approach, I bit down on my tongue in pain, which brought me back to some semblance of awareness. My body twisted awkwardly in mid-air.
Qing Kong Dao Ren's palm landed on my shoulder, and I fell like a broken kite with a thud onto a nearby office desk, my back aching painfully and my entire body ablaze with hurt...
"You still have some spirit left; a Daoist is just looking for an apprentice..." He said, extending his claw-like hands towards me.
I struggled to get up but found that I couldn't muster any strength at all.
"Stop!" Solemn shouted with an imposing presence. Today, Solemn wore a police uniform, exuding an air of authority.
Qing Kong Dao Ren withdrew slightly and shot me a grin that resembled that of a starving ghost seeing food; his eyes gleamed with hunger. The sight sent chills down my spine.
“Daoist, I’ll go ahead.”
With a leap, he jumped directly out of the window.
I cursed under my breath, “Damn, that’s impressive. Is he Spider-Man or something? Fourteen stories is at least forty to fifty meters. Unless he’s some kind of deity, he’s going to turn into a pancake after that jump.”
Solemn rushed to the window and looked down, slamming his hand heavily on the windowsill as he cursed.
I knew that Qing Kong Dao Ren had definitely run away.
“Is being a hero really that interesting?” Solemn squatted beside me, teasingly watching my reaction.
I felt speechless, thinking about how in TV dramas, it’s always the last-minute arrival of the heroes. And here I was, risking my own safety to rid the world of evil, yet I wasn’t even offered a reward or a thank you—just mockery?
I rolled my eyes and then suddenly blacked out.
When I woke up again, I found myself staring at the familiar patterned ceiling. Rubbing my forehead, I turned over and saw Wang Jun dozing off beside my bed with one hand propping up his head.
“Ling Feng, you’re finally awake!” He exclaimed loudly as he rubbed his sleepy eyes.
I was taken aback by his sudden enthusiasm. Anyone would feel overwhelmed waking up to such a warm embrace from someone of the same gender… If it were a beautiful woman, it might be different…
I quickly pushed Wang Jun away and asked about what happened after I fainted.
It was really just a matter of dealing with the aftermath. I was concerned about the souls of Lin Zhi and the other person trapped in the pillar. The police were responsible for maintaining order in the human world, but when it came to supernatural events, it was up to people like us.
“Oh… right. Officer Zhuang asked you to go to the police station to find him after you woke up…” Wang Jun said, slapping his forehead.
I got up, drank a glass of water, and moved my body a bit, secretly relieved that the hidden weapon didn’t contain any deadly poison; otherwise, I would have been in serious trouble.
After washing up and having lunch, I headed to the district police station following the address Wang Jun had given me.
The entire H City was covered in a layer of ice and snow, which made it feel less chaotic and more serene.
“Excuse me, is Officer Zhuang here?” I asked a chubby police officer with a round face.
The chubby officer looked me up and down. Since it was my first time in a police station, I had deliberately taken off my monk robe and changed into jeans and a thin jacket.
My hair was a bit long, but it was nothing more than a superficial appearance.
Seeing my outfit, the chubby officer probably thought I was there to turn myself in, so he cautiously led me inside.
Officer Zhuang was frowning at his computer, muttering to himself. When he saw me arrive, he stood up to shake my hand and then led me to a conference room.
“Tea? Coffee?” he asked, holding up two containers.
“Just plain water…” I replied. I couldn’t believe this guy had called me here and was actually pouring tea for me himself!
Officer Zhuang poured me a glass of plain water before sitting down across from me with a smile on his face.
A sense of foreboding rose within me. My luck with the same sex was too good; it was either a smile directed at me or a warm embrace.
Where were the beautiful women?
“Have you caught Qing Kong?” I asked.
Solemn sighed, then shook his head, offering me a cigarette. When I waved it away, he lit one for himself. “We’ve been trying to catch him too, but this old trickster is just too cunning. Even the Special Operations Department in the province can’t handle him…”
“Special Operations Department?” I asked curiously.
Solemn explained, “It’s the department that deals with special cases…”
Not wanting to delve deeper, I followed Solemn and rubbed my hands together. “So, about the aftermath…”
I was startled. No way they were going to make me pay? I was as broke as could be—no money and only my life to spare.
“I’m just trying to be kind here, and you want me to pay? That’s a bit much…”
Solemn rolled his eyes and blew out a smoke ring. “You did break this thing, didn’t you? If you don’t compensate, I can’t explain it to my superiors. How about you spend some time at the police station as a guest while I calculate things? Based on the market value of all the damaged items, it shouldn’t take more than a year or so…”
“Come on… You’ve wounded a kind heart here! How can anyone dare to act heroically in the future?” I protested, pointing at my chest in discontent.
Only then did Solemn smile and say, “If you want to avoid paying, you can cooperate with the police to handle the aftermath. Then we can waive the compensation…”
“Really?”
Solemn nodded. I asked, "So what do you want me to do?"
"The colleagues from the Special Operations Department are quite busy, so... for this matter... we still need your help," Solemn explained.
I was a bit surprised and asked, "You trust me this much? Aren't you afraid I'm a fraud?"
Solemn laughed heartily, "If you can stand on the same level as Qing Kong... do you think I should doubt you?"
I was speechless; it seemed he was quite certain of me.
"Deal... I'll take care of the soul transformation for Lin Zhi and the other person," I assured him.
"Pleasure working together..." Solemn flashed a bright smile and extended his right hand toward me.
I couldn't help but think to myself that "pleasure" was quite the understatement; in the end, I felt like I was doing all the hard work without any reward.
