The snow wasn't cold, but the melting snow was. On this snowy day, although the sun shone warmly on my body, it couldn't withstand the biting chill of the North Wind.
I wrapped Fo Zhang tightly in my coat, wishing I could shrink my head into it. My mind was preoccupied with Jiang Hai's situation, which is why I had hurriedly taken the bus early in the morning to get to Jiang Zong's house.
After transferring to another bus midway, it took nearly three hours to reach Jiang Zong's area.
“Driver, please let me in. I’m an old acquaintance of Jiang Zong. Do I look like a bad person?” I was stopped at the entrance, trying to reason with the security guard.
To my surprise, the guard was young and had a high tone. He sized me up and then said, “Then give me your unit number, and I'll call the owner to verify. Or you can call the owner yourself.”
I cursed under my breath. The last two times I came here, I took a car; how would I remember which building Jiang Zong lived in? As for his phone number, forget it. The guard watched me scratching my head and snorted coldly.
His gaze seemed to say: What are you pretending for? I've seen plenty of con artists like you.
Suddenly, an idea struck me. I pulled out Shen Tao's number from my pocket and said sweetly, “Sir, I found the number. Can I borrow your phone?”
Only then did the guard let me into the security room and help me dial Shen Tao's number.
“Hello, is this Tao Ge? It's me, Ling Feng. I'm at the entrance of Jiang Zong's neighborhood. Can you come out and meet me?”
Coincidentally, Shen Tao was reporting work at Jiang Zong's house at that moment. I settled into the security room and enjoyed the air conditioning for a while.
Indeed, living in a wealthy villa area had its perks; even the security room had free air conditioning. I struck up a conversation with the guard next to me: “Hey, are you guys hiring?”
The guard glanced at me and replied proudly, “Ordinary people can't get in here; you'd have to go through several rounds of interviews.”
I cursed inwardly, thinking, "What kind of requirements does a security guard have these days?"
"Look at me, strong and sturdy. Besides, I've trained in martial arts. A few ordinary thieves wouldn't stand a chance against me," I boasted, thumping my chest with a loud bang.
Just as I was about to show off a few moves, Fo Zhang suddenly wriggled out from my arms, leaping onto my shoulder and chirping away, his eyes darting around.
The noise made my head spin, so I quickly reassured him, "Stop making a fuss. Once we finish this business, I'll buy you some bananas, alright? When have I ever lied to you?"
After hearing my words, Fo Zhang quieted down a bit and settled on my shoulder, preening his fur.
The security guard noticed how clever Fo Zhang was, able to understand human speech. His interest piqued, he began to play with Fo Zhang while asking, "Brother, where did you get this monkey? He's so smart! Like a little kid."
Fo Zhang, aside from me and beautiful women, wouldn't let anyone else touch him. And considering the security guard was a burly man, Fo Zhang turned away dismissively, showing the guard his bright red backside.
I was about to brag about Fo Zhang to the security guard when Shen Tao arrived. Upon seeing me, he clapped me on the shoulder and said, "I knew you’d be fine. That guy who took you didn’t give you any trouble, did he?"
"After I was knocked out yesterday, did anything else happen? Did that guy release Jiang Hai?" I asked Shen Tao as we walked out of the security room.
Shen Tao sighed and replied, "I’m not too clear on the details. All I know is that Jiang Zong got hurt and Jiang Hai is still unconscious."
When I saw Jiang Jianguo again, his face looked pale and his spirit seemed low. He was quite surprised to see me. "She actually let you go?"
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I scratched my head and said, "I slipped away while they weren't paying attention. I was worried about the young master’s situation, so I rushed over early this morning to check."
Seeing my sincerity, Jiang Jianguo sighed deeply. "You’re quite thoughtful. But I know Miao Yayun. She’s not someone who would give up easily."
"Last time, she caught me off guard; otherwise, the outcome would have been uncertain," I said, trying to sound brave.
It was truly a case of immediate karma. No sooner had I spoken than I heard a familiar cold snort. "Then I’d like to see just how capable you are of escaping my grasp."
I turned around to see Miao Yayun and her beautiful apprentice, Hong Chou, standing not far away.
Hong Chou wore her usual harmless smile and said, "Junior Brother, leaving without a word like that is a serious betrayal of the sect. You know what that means—being sent to the Abyss of Ten Thousand Worms."
The thought of a pool full of insects made me shudder involuntarily. "Is there any logic in forcing someone to drink when they don’t want to? Taking on an apprentice should be mutual; is it really interesting to coerce me into this?"
Seeing the situation was turning unfavorable, I patted Fo Zhang, signaling it to slip away first. Miao Yayun glanced at the direction Fo Zhang was leaving and remarked, "Was this the creature that helped you untie your ropes before?"
I didn’t respond. Instead, I held the Ruyi Stick tightly in my hand, keeping a wary eye on both Miao Yayun and her apprentice.
"Junior Brother, I advise you not to anger your master; otherwise, you’ll be in for some real trouble. It won't be like last time when all I did was smear honey on you," Hong Chou said with an increasingly radiant smile, which only deepened my unease.
After all, these two were psychologically twisted!
Seeing my lack of reaction, Hong Chou raised her snow-white wrist adorned with bells that jingled sweetly. However, beneath that crisp sound lay hidden danger.
"Since you refuse to recognize your place, as your senior sister, I'll teach you the rules properly," Hong Chou said with a smile on her lips while her eyes glinted with icy mockery.
As the ringing intensified, swarms of insects began pouring into the room—crawling on the ground and flying through the air—all rushing toward me like they had gone mad.
I swung the Ruyi Stick in a wide arc and shouted to those behind me, "Run! Quickly! Close all doors and windows tightly and seal every gap!"
Miao Yayun merely watched coldly, showing no intention of intervening with the others. This eased my mind a bit as I focused all my efforts on dealing with Hong Chou.
After seeing Shen Tao and the others enter the room, I silently recited a spell to shield myself, then swung the Ruyi Stick towards Hong Chou.
The Miao Girl was skilled in sorcery, but her physical strength was quite weak. If I could take down Hong Chou in one fell swoop, Miao Yayun would likely hesitate to act. However, just as I was about to execute my plan with the Ruyi, countless colorful venomous snakes suddenly slithered towards me from the ground, flicking their tongues.
Looking at the swarm of snakes below, goosebumps erupted all over my body. How was I supposed to fight this?
Ranged spell attacks and close combat were not even in the same league!
Before I could finish chanting my spell, a sharp pain shot through my foot, and I felt myself becoming dizzy.
I cursed inwardly. What kind of snake was this? Did the Snake Venom really take effect this quickly? The thought of falling into the hands of those twisted master and apprentice again sent a chill down my spine.
