Hong Chou had likely never seen Miao Yayun like this before. In her heart, her master was always a cold and proud woman, but now her face was pale, and her gaze was vacant. A wave of bitterness surged within Hong Chou as she choked out, "Master!"
It was only then that everyone snapped back from the violent shaking of the ground, their eyes instinctively drawn to the spot where the statue in the temple had collapsed.
Miao Yayun trembled as she pointed at the fallen statue and said, "Ling Feng, go check it out."
Though I didn’t know if there was any danger lurking there, I noticed a rare glimmer of pleading in Miao Yayun's eyes. Gathering my courage, I made my way toward the statue.
As I got closer, I realized that beneath the fallen statue, the base wasn’t solid; it revealed a dark hole. I leaned in to take a look and felt a gust of wind carrying a decayed scent from deep underground.
Startled, I stepped back but stumbled over some rubble and fell to the ground. Fortunately, I didn’t hurt myself too badly, but my stomach inexplicably began to ache, causing my whole body to shiver.
It turned out that my Dan Tian's Zi Gu had somehow become agitated. It felt as if someone were drilling into my belly with an electric drill. I thought to myself how unlucky I was—was I really going to be in such pain that it would kill me?
The pain in my stomach intensified, and I felt as if the Zi Gu might burst forth at any moment. Yet, in this critical moment, I surprisingly found a sense of calm. My mind raced as I sought a solution.
Gu Dao Zhuang Mo Jing.
How could I have been so foolish? This scripture had just saved my life, yet I had forgotten it! Searching through my memory, I recalled a method for calming the disturbance.
With all my strength, I focused on my Dan Tian and used Fo Xi as a cage to trap the Zi Gu inside. Strangely enough, once the Zi Gu was contained, it ceased its turmoil.
Wiping the sweat from my forehead, I glanced outside and noticed that the expressions of those in the courtyard were also grim. Several people were sitting on the ground, their eyes reflecting fear and terror as they shuffled backward.
What was going on?
Wasn’t it just a fallen statue? Why did everyone look as if they were about to collapse? They should be arguing or fighting instead…
Why did everyone suddenly stop?
After resting against the wall for a moment, I stood up and looked around. I didn’t notice anything unusual, so I went back to Miao Yayun and said, “I’ve looked carefully; it’s just some rubble and nothing out of the ordinary.”
Miao Yayun was silent for a moment, then suddenly fixed her gaze on me as if she remembered something, and anxiously asked, “What happened when you were lying on the ground?”
I replied irritably, “Isn’t it because of your Zi Gu? Who knows what it was thinking? It nearly took half my life.”
Miao Yayun suddenly looked extremely anxious and pushed me, saying, “Hurry, go block the hole under the statue!”
I was curious about how Miao Yayun knew there was a hole there. Just as I was about to ask, I met Hong Chou's deadly glare. “When I tell you to go, you go. What are you hesitating for?”
I shrugged, not wanting to argue with this crazy woman. So I turned around and went back into the temple, searching for something suitable to block the hole. The hole was about the size of a well opening.
I wondered how big a stone I would need to cover it. Was I supposed to single-handedly move this giant Buddha back into place?
I wasn’t Popeye after eating spinach; I didn’t have superhuman strength.
As I was scratching my head trying to think of a solution, my foot slipped, and I fell backward. Instinctively, I reached out to grab something, and luckily my right hand caught hold of an object.
Feeling relieved for a moment, I didn’t expect my grip to loosen, and I ended up falling headfirst into that dark well.
My body slid down quickly, and all I could hear was the rushing wind in my ears. In frustration, I threw away the half stone I had been holding; it was infuriating.
Were the stones in this mountain fake? Were they made of foam? How could something that weighed over a hundred pounds be crushed so easily in my grip?
All I could think about was the gruesome image of my fall.
"Gollum..."
The stone I had casually tossed away soon reached the bottom, producing a soft rolling sound.
I felt a slight relief as I clawed at the wall with my hands, trying to slow my rapid descent. However, the well's walls were unnaturally smooth, as if they had been artificially polished, covered in a thick layer of moss.
Fortunately, I wasn't completely out of luck. Just when my fingernails were about to wear down to nothing, I spotted a protruding stone. I couldn't let this opportunity slip away. Gritting my teeth and enduring the sharp pain in my hands, I seized the stone and, using the momentum from my fall, managed to flip twice in mid-air before finally halting my descent.
I gasped for breath, feeling as if my throat was on fire. With every moment of stillness, the pain in my fingers became more excruciating. I looked up and saw only a faint glimmer of light at the opening above me, then glanced down into an abyss of darkness.
Could it really be this bad? Am I stuck halfway down?
For now, I still had the strength to hold on, but how long could that last? Even gods would tire eventually.
I tried to shout for help, but all that echoed back was my own voice, reverberating endlessly around me.
I felt a wave of despair wash over me as my fingers began to loosen their grip one by one. Cursing under my breath, I let go and fell.
Just as I closed my eyes to await my fate, there was a loud thud, and a searing pain shot through my back, as if my insides were about to burst out of my mouth.
Damn it, have I really hit the bottom?
As the pain coursed through me, I found myself torn between relief and sorrow. If I had known the bottom was so close, I wouldn't have endured this torment for so long.
I silently raised a middle finger towards the sky.
After lying down for a while, once my body had recovered a bit, I took out a few old clothes from my Qiankun Bag and set them on fire. The moment the flames ignited, a sense of safety washed over me, instinctively.
I looked around; the space at the bottom of the well seemed to be slightly larger. In the area illuminated by the firelight, I couldn't see the top. I found a clean corner to lean against the wall and dozed off in a daze.
When I woke up again, it was due to hunger. My stomach growled loudly, and although I had no idea how long it had been, Miao Zhenye and the others must have caused a commotion early in the morning; I hadn't even had breakfast.
Fortunately, I was someone who always prepared for emergencies. As the saying goes, "Carry an umbrella when it's sunny and bring provisions when you're full." I had packed quite a few things in my Qiankun Bag. Sustaining myself for a few days was definitely not a problem.
As I chewed on the dry cake, I looked up at the well opening that resembled a blood moon, hoping they would come to rescue me.
All I could say was: Hmph.
In the end, everything still depended on myself!
