At the moment when Zi Gu disappeared, Miao Yayun on the ground suddenly spat out a mouthful of fresh blood, and with a roll of her eyes, she fell into a coma.
The Giant Silkworm sniffed and nudged me with its enormous head. I stood frozen in place, hands raised, too afraid to move.
If it had been a cat or dog rubbing against me, I could have easily petted it to show affection. But this slippery, oversized head made it hard for me to act.
Fortunately, after sniffing around for a while, the Giant Silkworm turned around and went back to sleep. Just as I relaxed my guard and silently celebrated my narrow escape, strands of Silk shot toward me like an incredibly lush mane.
Although the cave was tall enough, it wasn’t very spacious. I used the Great Shift Technique to leap and dodge within the cave, but the Silk pursued me relentlessly.
After this chase, all I could think was a big “Damn it!”
A saying popped into my mind: Self-Imposed Restraint!
The cave was filled with a web supported by Silk, trapping me inside and rendering me immobile. The Silk was incredibly tough and somewhat sticky; no matter what I tried, I couldn’t break free from it. Blades and fire were utterly ineffective.
In the eyes of the Giant Silkworm, I saw an expression that was surprisingly human-like—contempt! It seemed to say: Are you moved?
I could only raise my hands again to signal that I dared not move!
Goodness, this creature must have gained intelligence. After all this trouble, feeling exhausted and thirsty, I decided to sit down on the ground to rest. Since I couldn’t get out anyway, it was better to conserve my strength and find another way out.
Once my mind settled down, I reflected on what had happened earlier. After the statue collapsed, why did everyone else seem fearful while I remained unscathed?
Otherwise, how could that old man with the white beard have so easily allowed me to inspect that cave entrance alone?
Although there were no images of Gu recorded in the Gu Dao Zhuang Mo Jing, there was one phrase: Once Gu is unleashed, there is no Gu beneath!
Thinking this over, could it be that Miao Yayun suppressed the Gu beneath the statue? And that enormous creature sprawled out not far from me—could it possibly be the Gu itself?
At this thought, my heart sank. Was this a path to life or death for me? I knew nothing about Gu Techniques; I was just a novice who had only recently come into contact with them.
After another two days, the insect seemed to think I was behaving better and slowly swallowed all the Silk back. As long as I didn’t venture out of the cave, it didn’t seem to bother me much.
During this time, I could only rely on meditation to calm my mind and pass the time. Otherwise, being trapped in such a place, I feared I would either go insane or lose my mind completely.
Strangely enough, every time I practiced, the insect would inch closer to me, and no matter how much I tried to shoo it away, it wouldn’t budge. Of course, I didn’t dare to force it away.
Even stranger was that whenever I ate Dry Cake, this creature would definitely wake up at the scent, opening its innocent big eyes and looking at me pitifully as if begging for a piece of my Dry Cake.
I couldn’t help but think, aren’t you insects supposed to eat mulberry leaves?
In order to fill my stomach, I racked my brain. I stood facing the insect and took out a piece of Dry Cake. I tore off a large chunk for myself and then tore off another piece for the insect.
You take one piece, I take one piece…
You take one piece, I take one piece…
But with such a large creature, I figured this little bit of food wouldn’t even be enough to fill its gaps.
Moreover, the water and food in my Qiankun Bag were nearly running out. I had no choice but to muster up the courage to negotiate with this creature.
“Hey, look at this place—dark, damp, and gloomy. Staying here for a long time would make anyone feel depressed. Even if you’re not depressed, you might end up with a skin disease or something. That wouldn’t feel good, right?”
The insect: …
“My food is almost gone too. I’m human; if I don’t eat or drink, I’ll die soon. If I die, there won’t be anyone to talk to you anymore. Isn’t that lonely? Isn’t that empty? Isn’t that cold? Right?”
The insect: …
“You’ve never seen the outside world; it’s so exciting out there! You can eat whatever you want—beef noodles, snacks from Shaxian, barbecues, dumplings, buns… There’s so much delicious food and fun things to do.”
The insect: …
“Great Thousand World is full of wonders. If nothing else, once we go out, who knows, we might even encounter a Mu Gu? Wouldn’t that be a delightful fate?”
“Gu: Fool, what do you know about Gu? Only the unique is truly called Gu, understand?”
I was so caught up in my excitement that I didn’t notice Gu’s disdainful gaze. “With so many benefits to be had outside, why don’t you join me in exploring the world? Stick with me, Ling Feng, and I guarantee you’ll live a life of luxury.”
“Gu: Stupid bipedal beast, do you think I don’t want to go out? It’s that I can’t.”
My enthusiasm deflated as I realized that despite my lengthy arguments about the pros and cons, Gu still looked half-dead. I felt like a deflated balloon, retreating to a corner to wallow in my own sorrow.
Am I destined for ruin? I haven’t even opened my shop yet, haven’t made any money, and haven’t married or had children. Am I really going to be envious of talent and perish before my time?
Just as I was squatting on the ground reflecting on my fate, I suddenly felt a few nudges on my back. Turning around, I saw Gu’s enormous head.
Gu moved its large head toward the cave entrance and then started heading out. Was it signaling for me to follow?
I cautiously trailed behind Gu, turning left and right, left and right…
Until the humidity grew heavier and the air became fresher. When I finally saw the water curtain outside the cave, I jumped up and hugged Gu’s big head, planting a kiss on it.
So this fellow is actually sending me out?
I pointed outside and asked, “Are you letting me go?”
Gu nodded.
“Then why aren’t you coming with me?” I inquired.
For a moment, there was a glimmer of light in Gu’s eyes before it dimmed again. It crawled toward the cave entrance but was bounced back upon touching it.
My emotions soared and plummeted like a roller coaster ride.
As I reached the entrance, I was surprised to find a barrier in place. Was this some kind of joke?
I skeptically approached the cave opening and slowly extended my hand outward. To my astonishment, my hand passed through without any resistance, touching the water outside.
I stepped out a little further, until half of my body was outside, and then I burst into laughter, realizing that this barrier had no effect on me.
Turning back to share my impending freedom with the Bug, I noticed its eyes filled with envy and a complex sense of loss.
I walked back into the cave and said, "Do you want to go out too? But you can't, can you? How can you bear to let me go?"
The Bug seemed quite downcast and ignored me, turning away to crawl deeper into the cave.
Suddenly, I felt a pang of sympathy and hurried after it. "If I find a way to take you with me, would you be willing to follow?"
