The days of being waited on were truly delightful, making me reluctant to leave.
However, the thought of Fo Zhang and my father made my heart yearn for home.
Fortunately, my flight was scheduled for after three o'clock. I asked Han Che to arrange a car to take me to Tian Tian's Home for a visit.
After all, it’s only right to say goodbye in person after getting to know someone. Plus, lying around for too long made me feel rusty all over. It would be nice to stretch my legs and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Y City.
Han Che was a leader among the younger generation. It took me quite a while to catch this fellow in the restroom.
“Han Che, I want to visit Tian Tian's Home. Can you send a car for me?” I asked.
Han Che replied impatiently, “You can’t even have peace when going to the restroom. Ling Feng, you need to remember your position; you’re no longer a public servant. You can’t use public vehicles for personal errands.”
“Don’t think just because the old man at the headquarters values you that you can disregard proper conduct.”
I felt a bit embarrassed; Han Che had a point. “If it’s inconvenient, forget it. Just tell me the address of Tian Tian's Home.”
Han Che provided the address. Luckily, Tian Tian's Home was in the city and not far from the suburbs, plus there were buses available. So I decided not to trouble anyone further.
Dawn District was an old area. The exterior walls of the houses were mottled, and green Climbing Tigers crawled up the courtyard walls.
Standing at the entrance of the district, I suddenly felt a wave of emotion; if only Tian Tian hadn’t been deceived back then, she would surely have had a happy family.
Fortunately, happiness may come late, but it eventually arrives.
Room 0! The dilapidated red door indicated that the owner of the house was not living in wealth.
A gray-haired man opened the door but looked quite cheerful. “Who are you looking for?”
“Is this Tian Tian's Home? I’m a friend of Tian Tian’s; my name is Ling Feng.” I smiled innocently while holding out some fruit.
I had intended to bring something nice, but my pockets were empty. I borrowed money from Han Che just to buy this fruit.
The man eyed me warily and called into the house, “Tian Tian, your friend is here. It’s Ling Feng; do you know him?”
A series of crashing sounds echoed from inside the house. Through the rusted iron door, I saw Tian Tian hurriedly running out of her room, wearing a hellkiy nightgown. Upon seeing me, her eyes turned red. "Ling Feng, I thought you were dead..."
Tian Tian opened the door and threw her arms around my neck, bursting into tears.
Tian Tian's Dad looked a bit awkward and offered me an apologetic smile as he welcomed me into the house.
Since I was the one who saved Tian Tian, she expressed her gratitude profusely and brought out the best tea in the house to entertain me.
"Tian Tian, what happened after I was kidnapped?" I asked.
Tian Tian smiled lightly, looking as beautiful as a flower after rain. "That Han Brother took me to the local police station. The leaders there were very polite to him, so they took my case seriously. Plus, I had memories when I was abducted. So they quickly found my parents, and I went home."
"I just didn't expect that my parents spent all their savings looking for me over the years. They've had such a hard time; it's all my fault..." Tian Tian choked up as she spoke.
Tian Tian's Dad also had red eyes as he held her close. "Good girl, it's just good that you're back, just good."
I find it hard to bear such warm scenes; it feels quite awkward. Once their emotions stabilized, I continued to ask, "So did the police take action against those beasts?"
Tian Tian replied, "Thanks to Han Brother's influence, the police took this matter seriously. They mobilized half the city's police force and destroyed those monsters' hideout in one go."
Tian Tian gritted her teeth.
I couldn't help but feel disheartened; I had never imagined that there could be such malicious and twisted people in this world beyond just ghosts and monsters.
The actions of those dwarfs completely overturned my understanding of human nature.
"This has been all over the news lately; many people have been rescued from there," Tian Tian continued.
I nodded; as long as the matter was resolved, that was what mattered. Then I could return without any worries.
At that moment, the iron door swung open. A woman walked in carrying a basket of groceries and looked surprised to see a stranger. "Who is this?"
Tian Tian quickly introduced me, "Mom, this is Ling Feng, the one I told you about who saved me."
Tian Tian's Mom gratefully took my hand and said, "Thank you for saving our Tian Tian. I don't have much to repay you with, but please stay and have a meal with us."
I really couldn't refuse her kind invitation, so I agreed.
Tian Tian's Mom pulled Tian Tian's Dad into the kitchen to busy themselves, leaving me and Tian Tian in the living room. Suddenly, the atmosphere became a bit awkward.
I decided to break the silence and asked, "Do you just stay at home all the time?"
Tian Tian's eyes instantly lost their sparkle as she nodded.
I pressed on, "Aren't you planning to go out and see the world? It's so exciting out there. You can make many friends and try lots of delicious food. You could... start a new life."
"Can I?" Tian Tian asked, her watery eyes looking at me.
I nodded, "Of course you can. Otherwise, if you keep locking yourself up in this house, what's the difference from before?"
Tian Tian held her cup tightly. "But I'm scared. I'm afraid of other people's gazes, afraid of societal judgment, afraid..."
Human nature is probably like this; it's not uncommon for people to drown in their own fears. "If it's really too hard, then change your environment. Find a new place where no one knows you and start over with your parents. If you keep feeling this way, your parents will suffer too."
Tian Tian nodded slowly. "Thank you, Ling Feng. I'll think about it. I just need a little more time."
Before long, the aroma of food wafted from the kitchen. It had been a while since I had home-cooked meals, and it smelled incredibly good.
However, I noticed something strange: Tian Tian's Mom seemed different from normal people.
It wasn't that anything was outright wrong; she just lacked some vitality—the kind of liveliness that comes with being alive.
Her movements were slow, almost robotic. When she spoke, aside from her mouth slightly opening, her eyes remained still, staring straight ahead.
Taking advantage of their busyness in the kitchen, I pulled Tian Tian aside and asked, "Tian Tian, don't you think your mom seems a bit strange?"
Tian Tian glanced at her busy mother in the kitchen and showed a thoughtful expression. "Now that you mention it, there is something odd."
“What happened?” I asked, my heart sinking.
Tian Tian recalled, “It was just a few days ago. We’re undergoing relocation here. The entire area has almost moved out, except for our family…”
“Ling Feng, is my mom okay?” Tian Tian asked anxiously.
I replied, “I can’t say for sure. It seems I’ll need to stay at your house tonight to observe and make an accurate judgment.”
Tian Tian looked a bit scared. “Ling Feng, what if something happens to my mom?”
I shook my head and patted my chest. “As long as I’m here, everything will be fine.”
Only then did Tian Tian manage a smile. “Thank you so much, Ling Feng.”
