I had breakfast with Ruo Yu and then headed to Tian Tian's Home. The first reason was to say goodbye, after all, we had known each other for a while. The second reason was to see if Mao Fa Jiang among them had been resolved.
When Tian Tian heard that I was leaving, a deep sense of reluctance showed on her face. I wasn't oblivious; I could feel it to some extent, but I just wasn't in the mood for it.
After confirming that everyone at Tian Tian's Home was in good health, I left the Tian family almost in a hurry.
“Ling Feng, this is the first time I've seen you in such a sorry state. Weren't you bragging about how fearless you were?” Ruo Yu teased, clearly enjoying the moment.
I rolled my eyes. “Have you ever heard a song?”
The monk goes down the mountain to beg for alms...
The old monk has something to say...
The women of Shan Xia are like tigers...
When you see them, you must avoid them...
...
I started belting out the lyrics, and Ruo Yu frowned, covering her ears. “Maybe you should stop singing. I'm afraid the whole car will want to hit you soon.”
“Ruo Yu, why are you pretending to be innocent? I remember you liked a woman once,” I shot back.
Ruo Yu's face showed a hint of nostalgia. “What we had was true love; you wouldn't understand.”
After arriving at the sanatorium, I asked around until I finally found Han Che. Without him helping me change my flight tickets, I wouldn't be able to go back.
When I found Han Che, he was rushing out of his office, and we almost collided with each other.
"Why are you back again?" Han Che glanced at me and asked, his pace unbroken as he continued to walk quickly.
I hurriedly followed him and said, "Boss, I haven't left yet. I ran into some issues that delayed me. Look at these tickets..."
I held up two crumpled tickets in my hand.
Han Che stopped and asked, "So what?"
I shook the tickets again and said directly, "So can the organization buy me two new ones?"
Han Che paused for a moment, looking somewhat troubled. "Our Special Investigation Bureau is a national public institution. All expenditures have regulations and records. It's difficult for me to do this..."
I didn't expect him to get all bureaucratic with me, so I decided to play hardball. "How about you lend me some money personally? I'll pay you back as soon as I get home! Is that okay?"
Han Che smirked and said, "Do you think I look like someone with savings?"
I pressed on, "I don't care. If you won't take care of my flight home, I'll just keep bothering you until you agree. If that doesn't work, I'll call your superiors in the capital."
Han Che rubbed his forehead, looking both pained and helpless. "Ling Feng, this is really hard for me! But it's not impossible to make an exception; there's just a saying: no merit, no reward."
I shot him a sidelong glance. "So as long as there's merit, there will be tickets?"
Han Che chuckled and patted my shoulder. "Brother, you're a smart one. Otherwise, how would I write this report?"
I cursed inwardly, realizing that wherever there’s an organization, there’s bound to be bureaucracy. If they wanted free help, just offering plane tickets wasn’t going to cut it.
Since Han Che was willing to take on this task, I wouldn’t hold back either. “If you want me to do this, it’s not impossible, but two plane tickets are what I deserve. So…”
I made a gesture as if counting money.
Han Che chuckled, “You really are someone who won’t let yourself be at a loss! Alright! I promise you. As long as you complete the mission successfully, the reward will be substantial!”
“Is that a promise?” I asked in return.
Han Che nodded and extended his right hand towards me. I slapped my palm against his. “Once a word is spoken, even a team of horses can’t chase it back!”
Han Che’s face lit up with joy, as if he had just shed a great burden, and he pulled me along as we headed outside.
“Due to the urgency of this mission, you’ll be leaving immediately. Someone will clarify the details with you. Any questions?” Han Che said as we walked.
I replied, “No questions, but can I bring Ruo Yu along? You know his capabilities.”
Han Che nodded. “But he’s your man; the reward won’t count towards your personal share.”
I could hardly resist the urge to punch Han Che’s handsome face. How could he be so stingy?
Once outside, I was shoved into a jeep.
In addition to Ruo Yu and me, there was a young man around twenty-eight or twenty-nine years old named Lu Yao, a woman in her thirties named Cai Ning, and someone my age called Ren Yi. The driver was an older local man whom everyone referred to as Mao Master.
Ruo Yu unreservedly claimed the passenger seat for himself.
Among the four, it seemed that Lu Yao was the leader, who introduced the situation to me.
Since the case had fallen into the hands of the Special Investigation Bureau, it indicated that this was no ordinary homicide.
The specific incident occurred a few days ago at noon in a place called Meishan, where there is a reservoir known as Meishan Reservoir.
However, ever since this reservoir was completed, there have been constant incidents. From livestock like cattle and sheep to adults and children, despite efforts to avoid trouble, people die every year.
It’s eerie! The nearby villages are filled with fear, and rumors spread that during the construction of the reservoir, the feng shui was disturbed.
This angered the Mountain God, who demands a life every year.
This year, inexplicably, several people have died. The village chiefs from several nearby villages convened and decided to invite a local shaman from the mountains to perform a ritual to appease the Mountain God.
This shaman is surnamed Liu and is known as Liu Po Po. She is over sixty years old and has some reputation in the area. Villagers often invite her to predict fortunes for events like building new houses.
Who would have thought that after performing the ritual by the reservoir, Liu Po Po mysteriously disappeared? It wasn’t until two days later that her swollen body was discovered in the reservoir.
Surrounding her corpse were numerous fish, continuously biting at Liu Po Po's body!
This incident caused quite a stir; villagers from several communities were terrified and even abandoned their ancestral lands, scrambling to move away.
The city had no immediate solution, so they handed the matter over to the Special Investigation Bureau.
Han Che, being impatient, quickly gathered a few people and headed straight to the scene.
Since Liu Po Po's body had been found, the village chiefs agreed that they could not leave it floating in the water.
They found a corpse retrieval specialist to bring up the incomplete body of Liu Po Po.
After Liu Po Po's body was pulled up, it hung dangerously from her mouth, her eyes wide open. The swelling from being submerged made her appear even more terrifying.
I listened to Lu Yao's vivid description, as if I had witnessed it myself.
Fortunately, the preparations had been made in advance. After several winding mountain roads, we finally arrived at our destination in the evening.
I was the first to get out of the car and stretched my body a bit. The village chief, having received the news, came to greet us with some villagers. He was momentarily taken aback by our youthfulness but quickly regained his composure and warmly shook hands with each of us.
Liu Po Po's body was placed in a makeshift shed outside the village because the villagers were reluctant to let such an ominous corpse enter their community.
The village chief could only helplessly arrange for a temporary shelter to hold the body.
