I fought back the urge to vomit as I searched the room inch by inch, finally finding Xuan in a glass jar labeled Talisman.
Xuan seemed injured, his body nearly transparent. I quickly tore off the Talisman and released him, then recited a spell to stabilize his spirit.
Next, I took out the Lucky Cat and let Xuan return to his original form. After resting for a while, he should be able to recover.
The remaining cleanup work was left to the personnel from the Special Investigation Bureau.
All of us had sustained some injuries. The children who had been trapped in the room were taken back to the station by a female officer, who then contacted their families.
In the crowd, I spotted Zhang Ningning. When I pulled out the spotted dog toy, the girl ran towards me in tears. "Uncle, did Dad and Mom send you to pick me up?"
I nodded and hugged Zhang Ningning tightly before following the ambulance to the hospital. Ruo Yu was severely injured and unconscious, so I naturally had to go with them.
"Ningning, were you scared being locked inside?" I asked.
Zhang Ningning shook her head. "I wasn't scared; there were many friends inside. Those who cried and made noise were taken out and never came back, so I didn't dare cry!"
I patted her head. Once we arrived at the hospital, I took a moment during Ruo Yu's surgery to call Zhang Madam.
As soon as Zhang Madam heard that we were at the hospital, her voice became sharp with concern, nearly deafening me through the receiver. I held the phone away from my ear and gave her the address.
Before long, Zhang Zong and Zhang Madam hurried over. The three of them embraced and cried together; it was indeed a touching scene.
Zhang Zong handed me an envelope from his bag, expressing his gratitude profusely.
After seeing off Zhang Zong's family, Ruo Yu's surgery was completed as well. Fortunately, aside from a few broken ribs and internal bleeding, there was no threat to his life.
Ji Kun and Solemn came by after finishing their tasks to visit. Since Ruo Yu hadn't woken up yet, I wasn't in the mood to entertain them; I just left my home phone number and address for another gathering later.
Ji Kun said, "Ling Feng, we really accomplished something significant this time. The Black Magic Cult is a faction of the Evil Spirit Cult. They split off during the great war over twenty years ago. From the confessions of those arrested, it seems that the Evil Spirit Cult is planning something big lately—they want to unify all factions and restore their former glory."
It truly is a case of life imitating art, as the disappearance of children has led to such a multitude of events.
I asked again, “What are they doing with these children?”
Ji Kun sighed and said, “They’re committing sins! These beasts believe in some cult that requires the flesh and blood of children for their practices.”
I couldn’t help but exhale sharply; these people must be out of their minds to believe such absurdities.
I cursed under my breath, “Damn it!”
Then I turned to Solemn and asked, “What about Baozi Shop?”
Solemn replied, “Nothing special. The owner has been in business for many years. People around here say he’s honest and straightforward, with no peculiar habits, and he hasn’t made any enemies!”
I frowned and said, “That’s strange. It doesn’t make sense that the dozen or so buns we bought all had nails in them. Even if he accidentally cut his fingers while preparing the filling, it shouldn’t be this much!”
“If the owner isn’t the problem, then it must be the meat? Keep an eye on it!” I analyzed.
Solemn nodded, “I was thinking the same thing. I’ll have someone investigate further.”
Fortunately, as a hero of the hour, we were placed in single patient rooms. I had just set up my folding bed when Ruo Yu woke up.
“Ruo Yu, how are you feeling?” I leaned in to ask.
Seeing me, Ruo Yu was initially wary but then relaxed. “I’m fine! What about you, Ling Feng?”
I nodded and smiled, “Who else would you think I am?” I reached out to touch Ruo Yu’s forehead. “Are you feeling a bit muddled from your illness?”
Ruo Yu said with lingering fear, “Ling Feng, do you know that Wuxin the Eunuch and Dai Zhuli were taken down by you alone? That’s impressive! He was someone who had roamed the martial world for years. You managed to handle him so easily.”
I couldn't understand whether it was truly my doing.
"However, after that, it was like he became a different person. He must have been blinded by rage, suddenly turning around to deal with us! I almost lost my life at your hands," Ruo Yu said.
I nodded reluctantly, a thousand questions swirling in my mind. An absurd thought suddenly struck me: Am I still myself?
After a while, Ruo Yu seemed tired. I took out the Wood Heart and handed it to her. "Don't rush to sleep tonight. First, cultivate for a bit. With the Wood Heart, your injuries will heal faster."
Ruo Yu accepted it without hesitation and began her cultivation.
But after I turned off the lights, I couldn't calm my mind no matter what.
This didn't seem to be the first time such a situation had occurred. Earlier, when I was at home and entered that cave, I experienced something similar; it felt as if another version of me resided in my head!
I drifted into a restless sleep just before dawn. When I woke up again, Ruo Yu had already changed her clothes and looked much better.
"Ling Feng, let's go home! This place feels strange; I can't get used to it!"
I was surprised by Ruo Yu's recovery speed. "You're okay now?"
She patted her chest confidently. "With the Wood Heart, of course, I'll heal quickly!"
Once we returned home, I felt more relaxed. As I bent down to clean up, a clear female voice rang out from outside, "Oh, the big boss is doing the work himself? Need to hire a part-time worker?"
I didn't need to turn around to know who it was; it was my sister who had grown up with me, Gu Feifei!
"Fei Fei, what brings you here?" I asked as I turned around.
But upon seeing her, my expression changed. A dark aura lingered on Fei Fei's Yintang, clearly indicating that she had recently come into contact with Gui Wu; otherwise, it wouldn't be this intense.
Fei Fei smiled and said, "Isn't it May Day? There are no classes at school, so I came over to see if there's anything I can help with. The last time I came, the gate was closed, and today I just took a chance. I didn't expect you all to be here."
As she spoke, Fei Fei rolled up her sleeves and got busy.
I tentatively asked, "Fei Fei, is the workload heavy at your school? And does your medical school have any strange rumors or anything?"
Fei Fei laughed and replied, " Ling Feng, it sounds like you're suffering from a professional illness. Our school is a legitimate medical school."
I scratched my head and said, "But don't all schools have some terrifying and bizarre places?"
Fei Fei exclaimed, " Ling Feng, you might be onto something. There is indeed such a place. Behind our school's playground, there's an abandoned laboratory building. It's said to be quite eerie, but I haven't been there..."
I asked again, "Fei Fei, have you encountered anything strange lately?"
Gu Feifei's expression noticeably changed as she shyly denied it, saying, " Ling Feng, why are you asking about this out of the blue? Other than studying, I don't have anything else going on, so I wouldn't encounter anything strange."
