Tao Shanshan continued, "Well, Ji Bai wanted to make it a big deal, so he took us to the old abandoned building behind the school playground to hold a séance."
I asked, "Is that the building rumored to be very eerie?"
Jingjing looked surprised and said, "Fei Fei, you know about this too?"
I smiled and replied, "It's my line of work, so I'm naturally more interested in strange occurrences. I couldn't help but ask a few more questions."
Solemn curiously inquired, "What rumors are you talking about? How come I don't know?"
Jingjing explained, "It's just some horror stories that circulate in the school. The old building behind the school used to be a laboratory. During the Anti-Japanese War, the Nationals conducted experiments inside it, and it was abandoned afterward. There was a Senior Sister who committed suicide there out of love; she wore a bright red dress when she took her life. Since then, there have been rumors that the old building is haunted, with cries heard every night."
Such rumors are common in almost every university; they aren't particularly unusual.
Seeing that our conversation had come to an end, Tao Shanshan continued, "That night after our study session, we deliberately lingered around the playground until midnight. Then we followed Ji Bai and three other guys from their dormitory to the old building. With boys around, we girls felt a bit reassured. So, the eight of us took flashlights and whatever supplies Bishan needed and went inside."
Tao Shanshan's body involuntarily shivered as if recalling something terrifying. After sipping a few mouthfuls of hot milk tea, she calmed down slightly. "We sat in a circle, holding hands. In the center, we laid out a piece of paper with some words written on it—those words were written in blood. It was said that using blood as guidance would make the séance go more smoothly. In the middle of the paper was an inverted bowl. Anyone wanting to ask a question would place their index finger on top of it. If there really was a spirit willing to answer, it would push the bowl to a specific word on the paper, and that would be the answer we sought."
I couldn't help but interject, "What kind of blood did you use?"
Jingjing replied, "I don't know about that; the boys prepared all the props. Each of us dripped a drop of our own blood into what was already prepared!"
My heart sank at her words. "You mean blood from your middle finger?"
Jingjing nodded and said, "You're really sharp; how did you guess that?"
I thought to myself that this was not good—clearly someone was orchestrating all of this from behind the scenes; otherwise, how could everything be so coincidental? The materials used were quite sophisticated.
I looked at Ji Bai and asked, "Is there any significance to the props you prepared? Who taught you this?"
Ji Bai replied, "This is how it's been passed down in school. We're just following the example. Come on, officer, we're all educated people here. Can't we look at this from a dialectical materialist perspective?"
With that, he stood up and left! Clearly, he was upset.
I observed his back as he walked away. We were only asking normal questions; why did he get so angry all of a sudden?
Once he left, Tao Shanshan didn’t pay us any mind and hurried after him with her suitcase. The wheels of her suitcase made a Gollum-Gollum sound against the floor, drawing curious glances from people in the cafeteria.
Solemn's expression was somewhat displeased; this was quite disrespectful to public officials. He quietly took over the conversation, saying, "It's fine; I can handle the rest just as well."
Through the cafeteria glass, I seemed to see Ji Bai and Tao Shanshan arguing.
I didn't pay much attention to that because I was more concerned about what would happen next with the others.
Solemn continued, "Each of us had questions. Some asked about final exams, some about future prospects, and others about their partners. Surprisingly, some of it was quite accurate, and that bowl really did move on its own. But then Fei Fei suddenly brought up a chilling question."
Solemn asked curiously, "What question?"
Jingjing swallowed hard and glanced around before saying, "We were originally holding hands in a circle. This is a complete circle. But every time someone asked a question, a segment of the circle would break; one hand would have to reach out to touch that bowl, leaving one person next to them with an empty hand. However, Fei Fei noticed that the circle remained intact. So who was holding the hand of the remaining person?"
I couldn't help but shiver at her words; Solemn's face also paled slightly.
Jingjing continued, "As soon as Fei Fei said that, several of us girls were so scared we cried out; it turned into chaos. The boys didn’t cry, but I could see their faces change too; they were sweating in their palms. So everyone suggested packing up and going home. But Ji Bai inexplicably got angry, saying that if the ritual wasn’t completed and was interrupted midway, everyone would be haunted by Li Gui and meet a terrible fate! But in that moment, who cared about all that? We all just ran out."
“Then what?” Solemn asked.
Jingjing thought for a moment and shook her head. “There’s nothing after that! The next thing is that Qiao Qiao died, and in such a tragic way in the dormitory!”
Jingjing's eyes turned red again. I asked in a low voice, “Was Qiao Qiao’s tragic death last night the seventh after you all played the game?”
Jingjing carefully considered this, her eyes filled with terror. “Yes, it was the seventh…”
“Oh no,” I said seriously to Solemn, “You need to send someone to find Ji Bai and the three others from his dormitory immediately. If we wait too long, something bad might happen.”
Solemn knew my capabilities and was already preparing to get up to find the principal, planning to shout a few times at the School Broadcast Station. This method was both quick and efficient.
I gave a thumbs up to Solemn for his cleverness.
Seeing my serious demeanor, Jingjing also stood up and said, “I’m from the School Broadcast Station. Officer Zhuang, come with me.”
On our way to the broadcast station, we suddenly saw a crowd of people gathering around in one direction.
I shook my head. “The essence of Nationals is their love for excitement. It must be some big star visiting the school; look at how tightly they’re packed in here.”
Solemn nodded. “They don’t even worry about accidents. With so many people around, if there’s a stampede, I’d probably be in trouble as a police officer.”
Jingjing curiously glanced over and murmured, “That seems to be in the direction of the boys’ dormitory. Even if a big star is coming, they should be in the auditorium!”
Jingjing pointed in the opposite direction, where the auditorium was located.
I exchanged a glance with Solemn, and the playful glint in our eyes vanished in an instant. We both realized that something might have gone terribly wrong.
Without hesitation, we sprinted toward the crowd, but it was so dense that we couldn't push our way through.
Solemn pulled out his Police Badge, and I used my internal energy to shout, "Police are investigating! Please make way!"
With the power of my internal energy, my voice resonated like a loudspeaker.
The crowd parted automatically, revealing a body lying on the ground.
The body was grotesquely twisted, and beneath it lay a pool of dark red blood.
Jingjing, who arrived later, caught sight of the scene inside and let out a scream before fainting!
