When Fo Zhang returned with Buddha Sound, we had already finished dinner.
I grabbed the fur on Buddha Sound's back; this little guy had clearly been playing outside and didn’t seem to care about me at all.
I held him by the scruff of his neck, and his four short legs kicked in protest.
Fo Zhang was protective of him, chattering away at me while shaking my arm.
Only then did I let go of Buddha Sound. "Tomorrow, you’re coming with me to the city. I have something for you to do."
Buddha Sound seemed reluctant to leave the mountains, standing up on his hind legs to protest. I glanced at Fo Zhang, signaling that such an important task was entrusted to him.
Then I went to bed. The next day, Buddha Sound obediently followed Fo Zhang.
I patted Fo Zhang's head; in the end, he was still the most considerate one, understanding how to share my burdens.
I turned to Buddha Sound, who was drooping his head, and said, "Once everything is settled, you can come back! I’m not at ease with you not here, keeping an eye on my dad and the village."
With my assurance, Buddha Sound perked up and started frolicking ahead with Fo Zhang.
During the car ride, things couldn’t be so carefree. Buddha Sound took the opportunity to sneak onto the car while Fo Zhang squatted on my shoulder. Curious passengers offered him fruit, and he accepted every piece without hesitation.
Eventually, after he seemed full, he handed me a piece. I thought he had a change of heart and wanted to share with me. However, just as I was about to take a bite, he started chirping again.
I rolled my eyes and took the fruit from him. Only then did he settle down a bit and fall asleep in my arms.
Buddha Sound stood out too much, so I brought him home to familiarize him with the entrance. That way, when he came to the city again, he would know where to find me. Although his subordinates were scattered throughout the city looking for me wouldn’t be difficult, recognizing the entrance would make it much easier.
I gave Buddha Sound a whole white period to gather its minions; after all, many hands make light work. This mouse should dig faster with more help.
As the light gradually dimmed, Wan Jia's lights began to flicker on one by one. I first went to the police station to pick up Ruo Yu, and after having dinner together, we made our way to the school.
I didn’t dare to choose a spot too close to the old building for fear of being discovered by Yamamoto Taro. So, I opted for a grove by the playground.
Then I said to Buddha Sound, “Dig from here; I want to get to the old building. Do you understand?”
Buddha Sound nodded and then stood upright, emitting a series of sharp shrieks. Before long, I heard rustling sounds approaching us quickly from afar.
Soon enough, I saw a swarm of dark mice, perhaps hiding in the underground passage, emanating an unpleasant odor.
Under Buddha Sound's control, the swarm moved in an orderly fashion—some digging while others transported dirt. It seemed that the mice had divided into several groups, taking turns to rest.
Indeed, it wasn’t long before they broke through to a tunnel leading to the sewer. I went down first, but Ruo Yu got stuck in a rather unfortunate predicament.
Buddha Sound had to signal for them to widen the hole a bit more before Ruo Yu finally tumbled down.
With Buddha Sound guiding the way, I didn’t have to worry much. After walking for a while, Buddha Sound suddenly stopped and let out another sharp cry; the swarm began digging again. This time, they were digging in a very clever spot.
It was right beneath the dilapidated front desk in the lobby, so when Ruo Yu and I crawled out, surprisingly no one outside noticed us.
I instructed Buddha Sound to stay below and keep an eye on that Five-Pointed Star Array Disk.
With Buddha Sound’s assistance, things became much easier for me. However, just as I poked my head out from behind the broken front desk, we heard a loud alarm ringing—a sound that was quite piercing.
But since Ruo Yu and I were both masked up, we thought that since we had already been exposed, we might as well come out boldly and directly.
Three people burst into the room from outside, shouting at us with fierce expressions, as if they were ready to devour us.
The warrior with a mohawk spoke in broken Mandarin, “That pig is a trouble! It’s dead, it’s dead!”
Ruo Yu, known for his bad temper, cursed under his breath and charged forward without hesitation.
Why waste words when you can solve problems with your fists?
Ruo Yu had been cooped up in the police station, babysitting those troublesome kids, and now he was seething with frustration. The warrior with the mohawk was unfortunate; within moments, Ruo Yu had him pinned to the ground, where he lay groaning in agony.
One of my opponents appeared to be a Yin Yang Master, while the other seemed like a ninja.
The Yin Yang Master summoned a Shikigami to entangle me, while the ninja kept harassing me, preventing me from getting close to the Yin Yang Master.
Naturally, I wasn’t afraid of the Shikigami. I charged straight at it and landed a punch squarely on the Yin Yang Master’s temple.
With a loud thud, the Yin Yang Master collapsed. This all happened in a matter of seconds. Realizing the situation was dire, the ninja threw down a smoke bomb.
In a cloud of smoke, he vanished without a trace. He was likely off to find reinforcements.
We had searched the fourth floor thoroughly but had never been to the fifth. Ruo Yu and I dashed up the stairs.
At the stairway leading to the fifth floor, we encountered an iron door welded shut, blocking our way. A rusty padlock hung from it.
I kicked the iron door hard, producing a loud clang. Seeing this, Ruo Yu pushed me aside and gripped the padlock with both hands. I was astonished; I had only heard of breaking stones with one’s chest—could I actually witness someone break a padlock with bare hands today?
Ruo Yu gripped the heavy lock tightly, bracing himself in a horse stance, and then began to pull with all his strength in the opposite direction.
"Crack!"
To my surprise, he managed to snap the lock cleanly. I quickly swung open the iron door.
A cloud of dust cascaded down, making it difficult for both Ruo Yu and me to open our eyes.
Once the dust settled a bit, I turned on my flashlight and shone it inside, but it seemed as though the darkness swallowed the beam whole.
A foul, decaying odor wafted in with a gust of wind.
I couldn't help but sneeze several times, rubbing my nose until I adjusted to the smell.
"Ling Feng, something feels off," Ruo Yu said, unusually cautious.
I hesitated for a moment before stepping out, then chuckled, "In that case, let them scout the way for us!"
Ruo Yu and I took off our shoes and left a few footprints on the stairs before cautiously retreating to hide on the fourth floor.
The heavy iron door creaked back and forth, emitting eerie sounds.
Sure enough, it wasn't long before hurried footsteps approached.
It seemed someone was pointing at the iron door and saying something.
Yamamoto Taro cautiously glanced at the door before leading his men up to the fifth floor.
Two guards were left at the exit, just in case something happened.
As I was about to go out with Ruo Yu to take down the two guards, a chilling scream echoed from upstairs.
Following that, there was a chaotic sound of footsteps. From the noise, it seemed that something terrifying had appeared, causing everyone to panic and flee in disarray.
Yamamoto Taro shouted loudly, and the sounds of fighting could be heard intermittently.
Ruo Yu and I exchanged glances, both filled with relief. Thankfully, we were clever enough to avoid this disaster; if we had gone up first, who knows what might have happened!
Just as I was feeling smug about our luck, I saw Yamamoto Taro rushing down in a panic, his eyes reflecting rare fear.
It seemed that something dreadful was chasing him!
