As we left the city, the driver stubbornly refused to go any further, so we got out of the car. Darkness enveloped us, and I focused on my direction before hastily moving forward.
“Ling Feng, don’t worry too much,” Solemn said. “Ruo Yu may be strong, but he’s also clever. He won’t be caught easily…”
His words only tightened the knot in my stomach. A sense of foreboding washed over me.
Jian Jie chimed in, “We didn’t see anything unusual when we left, so your friend is probably hiding. He should be fine!”
I slowed my pace, remembering that a woman was following behind us.
I said, “It’ll be dawn soon, so I want to take advantage of the darkness to check things out. As long as I confirm Ruo Yu is okay, I’ll feel better. You all wait for me from a distance; I’ll be back shortly.”
As we neared Pig Farm, I noticed beams of light flickering wildly and the sounds of a fight echoing in the air.
I rushed over and saw Ruo Yu surrounded. A group of people on motorcycles encircled him, their engines roaring loudly as they swung ropes, trying to ensnare him.
To my surprise, Ruo Yu’s eyes were red with determination. He locked onto one motorcycle and charged straight at its side. Breaking free from the circle, he stumbled right into Mo Cang and Xia Xing.
“Who are you?” Mo Cang asked with a frown, then paused in surprise. “You’re not human, are you?”
“It doesn’t matter who I am; just let my brother go!” Ruo Yu demanded.
“Your brother? It seems there are no outsiders here. Are you mistaken?” Mo Cang replied irritably. His patience was wearing thin after repeated disturbances.
Ruo Yu shouted, "I saw him go inside with my own eyes! What have you done to him?"
Without hesitation, he charged towards them, disregarding the overwhelming odds against him.
Mo Cang, seemingly fed up with the situation, coldly ordered, "Kill him!"
He then turned and walked back into the courtyard. Liu Er yawned and stayed behind, leaning against the wall as if preparing to watch the show unfold.
Xia Xing and Yao Ji restrained Ruo Yu while the others took the opportunity to strike at him with their weapons. Jian Jie quickly approached Liu Er and said, "You go in and hold Mo Cang!"
Liu Er was somewhat confused but, upon seeing me hiding in the shadows, he entered the house.
As soon as Liu Er went in, Jian Jie and I launched a surprise attack, tearing a hole in the encirclement. I shouted loudly, "Ruo Yu, come with me!"
Xia Xing exclaimed in surprise, "How are you here?"
I ignored him, and we all ran for our lives. The dawn was just beginning to break.
We chose the most difficult paths to navigate as we fled desperately. Fortunately, there weren't many motorcycles chasing us. We fought while running, getting further away from Pig Farm.
Gradually, it began to brighten up. We reached the highway and flagged down a large truck, climbing aboard without hesitation.
The motorcycles pursued us relentlessly behind. The driver of the truck seemed afraid of getting involved and considered pulling over to the side of the road.
Solemn pulled out his police badge, and the driver immediately stepped on the gas, speeding away. The closer they got to the city center, the more cars filled the roads.
The large truck was fearless; who wouldn’t be if they could just crash into something? The motorcycle, however, had the advantage of agility and managed to keep up all the way into the city.
Once they arrived in the city, it was Solemn's territory. He made a call and set up surveillance at various intersections, successfully capturing all those who had been tailing them.
After a night of turmoil, aside from Ruo Yu sustaining some injuries, everyone else was safe and sound. After a brief rest, we decided to personally interrogate the captured members of the Evil Spirit Cult.
However, before we could start the interrogation, one of Solemn's subordinates rushed over in a panic—the captured individuals were all dead. They had committed suicide by poison!
I silently lamented that ordinary personnel were no match for the Special Investigation Bureau. Although I had heard some news from Liu Er, it was merely surface-level information; there was much that Liu Er didn’t know.
Now that such a good opportunity had slipped away, it was truly regrettable. With no one left to interrogate, I took Ruo Yu and Jian Jie home to rest.
“Jie Yuan Pu! You opened a shop?” Jian Jie asked.
I nodded. “Yes, just trying to make a living!”
I forced myself to stay awake long enough to familiarize Jian Jie with a few things before heading straight into my room to rest. This period had been exhausting.
When I finally woke up again, it was to the enticing aroma of food wafting through the air. As I opened my eyes, there was a moment of blankness in my mind. Then it hit me—wait, Ruo Yu can’t cook!
Then I remembered that Jian Jie was also in the house, but she certainly didn’t look like someone who could cook either.
As I finished washing up and headed downstairs, I saw Jian Jie wearing an apron and serving dishes. Her hair was casually tied back with a hair tie, making her appear much more approachable.
Unlike before, when she always wore a high ponytail and had an icy demeanor that kept people at a distance.
I asked, "You can still cook?"
Jian Jie replied, "What do you mean by 'still'? Just because a pretty girl looks good doesn't mean she can't cook!"
I chuckled; was she really boasting like that? While we were talking, Ruo Yu had already started eating, slurping the food down with delight.
I swallowed hard and quickly grabbed some chopsticks to join the effort of devouring all the dishes on the table. Watching Ruo Yu and me compete to finish the food I had made, Jian Jie wore a satisfied smile. "Not bad! Looks like my cooking skills haven't declined!"
I laughed and said, "How about you come work with me? I'll pay you a salary!"
Jian Jie pondered for a moment. "You want to hire me? My asking price isn't low! Do you think your little business can afford me?"
I waved my hand dismissively. "Don't underestimate me; just because this place seems small doesn't mean it lacks potential. They say if you don't open for half a year, when you do open, you'll eat for half a year."
Jian Jie rolled her eyes. "So, Ling Zong, what position are you planning to give me?"
"How about Executive Secretary and Logistics Department Head?" I replied with a smile.
In response, Jian Jie threw a dishcloth at me and untied her apron. "Hurry up and wash the dishes!"
As soon as I finished washing the dishes, the phone rang. Without even needing to answer, I knew it was Solemn calling. Sure enough, it was the people from the Special Investigation Bureau, and this time, the team was led by an Old Man.
I had initially thought about not going, but with the Old Man here, it would be inappropriate for me to stay away.
So, I greeted Ruo Yu and the others, only to find that both of them insisted on going as well.
By the time we arrived, we hadn't even entered the door before we were pulled into a car, which then drove straight to the Pig Farm.
“Ling Feng, you’ve really made a contribution this time,” the Old Man said with a smile.
I replied, “If Mo Cang wasn’t an idiot after all that commotion yesterday, he would have left long ago. There’s no way he would still be waiting for us to catch him.”
The Old Man added, “What can be done in such a short time? Unless they’ve given up on this base. Besides, we’ve set up checkpoints on all major routes. If they try to escape, they won’t get past the net we’ve laid out!”
