Although we didn't search every corner of the Underground City, it was safe to conclude that the members of the Evil Spirit Cult had likely already withdrawn. Otherwise, they wouldn't have let us leave so easily.
Ever since I agreed to become the king of the Miao Gu lineage, Miao Yayun had been trailing closely behind me. It was uncomfortable for both of us.
Fortunately, at that moment, Solemn received a call from the bureau. The Civil Affairs Bureau was in chaos, being disturbed by a group of middle-aged women. The situation seemed serious, prompting the Special Investigation Bureau to send someone over to take a look.
Though I wasn't part of the Special Investigation Bureau, I volunteered to handle the situation. An Old Man understood my predicament and used the excuse of discussing Gu Technique to keep Miao Yayun occupied.
However, while I managed to keep the older one busy, Miao Yayun insisted that Hong Chou accompany me; otherwise, she would come along herself. With no other choice, I reluctantly agreed.
On our way back, Solemn drove the car with me, Ruo Yu, Jian Jie, and Hong Chou all squeezed inside. Ruo Yu initially intended to sit in the back but caught Solemn's eye and understood immediately, opting instead for the front seat. She cheerfully explained, "I'm too big; I won't squeeze in with the ladies in the back."
I shook my head in disbelief and settled into a corner of the back seat. To my surprise, Jian Jie and Hong Chou both entered from either side of the car.
Jian Jie climbed in from my side and said, "Do you have any awareness? Move over a bit."
Reluctantly, I found myself surrounded by two beautiful women. If it were any other time, I would have enjoyed being enveloped by such beauty. But now, it felt awkward. Previously, Hong Chou had been fiery like chili peppers; she would either hit or scold me on sight. Now she seemed obedient, which made everything feel off-kilter.
Jian Jie was fine; she wore her headphones and clearly had no intention of engaging with me. I could only focus on my breathing and try to calm myself.
Since we were driving a police car, traffic was smooth all the way to the Civil Affairs Bureau. Upon arriving at the entrance, I opened my eyes from my meditative state and was immediately struck by a cacophony of wails. For a moment, I thought I had mistakenly arrived at a funeral home instead of the Civil Affairs Bureau.
What a scene! Every woman was crying and cursing her man while the men wore pained expressions as they desperately tried to explain themselves.
The women were mostly shouting things like: "I'm definitely getting a divorce! The kids are mine!" The men countered with: "Honey, I swear I didn't cheat! I'm not getting divorced! I really haven't done anything wrong!"
It felt like we had stumbled into a dramatic tragedy unfolding right before us. As soon as I stepped out of the car, I noticed that many of these men had dark circles under their eyes and looked utterly drained.
A quick glance around revealed that everyone seemed equally distressed. Realizing how serious the situation was, I quickly pushed through the crowd and headed inside. The leaders of the Civil Affairs Bureau saw us arrive and rushed us into a quiet office with somber faces. "Thank goodness you’re finally here! If you hadn't come soon, I'm afraid our threshold would have been trampled flat."
"What’s going on?" I asked directly.
The leader probably didn't know what was going on either, as he called in a female staff member and said to us, "Kuei has been with us for a long time. If you have any questions, feel free to ask her."
The woman named Kuei appeared to be in her forties, dressed in work attire, and looked well-maintained, seeming quite youthful. "I've been working here for nearly twenty years and have never encountered such strange occurrences. Usually, when we deal with divorces, we try to understand the situation and offer some advice. If the parties still insist, we proceed with issuing the divorce certificate. However, recently, I don't know what's happening; there must be at least a thousand couples arguing over divorce, all citing the same reason: the man’s infidelity. But strangely enough, the men refuse to admit to cheating. Women are naturally more sensitive to such matters; they usually know their husbands' true states."
We hadn't expected that Kuei would become increasingly bold as she spoke, even mentioning things like "inventory," while enthusiastically sharing tips with Hong Chou and Jian Jie on how to check if a man was cheating after marriage.
This made both of them blush like ripe apples. I pondered quietly; based on my earlier observations of those men’s faces, there had to be something more to this situation.
"Kuei, don’t you have a system? Could you help us look up the home addresses of these divorcing couples?" I asked politely.
Kuei seemed pleased by my calling her "sister" and cheerfully replied, "Sure!" Then she swayed her hips and went out to check. In no time, she returned with a stack of papers.
I quickly took them from her and examined them closely before handing them to Solemn. After he looked through them, he said, "Just as you guessed?"
I nodded; indeed, all these couples seeking divorce were from North City District. H City has four districts with nearly four million residents. The northern part has about one million people.
But what are the odds that all this would happen in just one district?
Solemn and I exchanged glances and almost simultaneously said, "Looks like we need to take a stroll around North City District tonight; we should find out what's going on."
Around two in the morning, Solemn drove us through the northern part of the city. There weren't many cars on the road at night, and fearing that Solemn might fall asleep at the wheel, I kept him company with conversation.
Suddenly, a faint sound echoed in my ears—pleasant like music. Alerted, I silently recited the Six Character Mantra and then asked Jian Jie and Hong Chou, "Did you hear any sound?"
Both Jian Jie and Hong Chou shook their heads. I then asked Ruo Yu and Solemn. Ruo Yu seemed a bit dazed and gasped for breath. Solemn was even worse; his face turned as red as a monkey's bottom as he started taking off his clothes.
I quickly pulled out Shari and recited a passage from a scripture; only then did they regain some clarity. Thankfully it was brief; otherwise, our whole car might have ended up in trouble because of Solemn's driving.
"Solemn, what did you just see?" I quickly asked him.
Solemn's face was still a bit flushed, and his breath was uneven. After a while, he said, “I first heard a beautiful song, and then I can’t remember anything else. But I saw my ex-girlfriend. You know the one…”
Since there were women present, Solemn didn’t elaborate further; it was probably just like having a fleeting dream.
Suddenly, I recalled that summer night from long ago when the men lounging in the area seemed to have lost their souls as they lined up to head towards the lake.
Standing on the rolling waters was a woman with an alluring figure. I still remember the look in her eyes as she gazed towards my hiding place.
Could it be her? Wasn’t she injured by her master back then? How did she end up here? Moreover, her skills seemed to have improved significantly. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to cast such a wide-ranging Illusion.
I frowned and said, “I think I know who’s causing trouble. It must be a Carp Spirit that has cultivated itself into a form.”
Solemn was surprised. “Is that really possible? I thought the tales of mermaids were just myths!”
