I once thought that the tales of mermaids in Western folklore, who lured men to the sea with their enchanting songs only to devour them, were purely fictional. To my surprise, there truly exist transformed creatures like carp that use their voices to seduce men and drain their essence.
Jian Jie scoffed disdainfully, "Look at what you men have in your heads. You’re so easily fooled by this little illusion. Why don’t you try enticing us women instead?"
Her words made me ponder for a moment. Throughout history, most bizarre tales revolve around stories of snake spirits repaying kindness or fox demons expressing love—beautiful yet tragic love stories.
When I thought about it, the only instances in martial arts novels where men abduct young women for their own pleasure came to mind. So, I found myself at a loss for a retort to Jian Jie’s comment and instinctively replied, "You’re the one with your head full of nonsense!"
Suddenly, the car fell silent. Everyone turned to look at me, then at Jian Jie, before bursting into laughter. Solemn laughed the hardest and said, "Ling Feng, your timing for that confession is impeccable! Your words are just as brilliant." He even gave me a thumbs-up and pounded his fist against his chest a few times in support.
I didn’t mind much; my main concern was avoiding any embarrassment for Jian Jie. So I changed the subject and asked, "Do you still want to catch the Carp Spirit? If not, I’ll just go home and sleep. It’s not like anyone wants to wander around with you in the dark."
Solemn chuckled and teased, "Oh, are we seeing some anger from you now? Alright then, just point us in the right direction so we can chase after the Carp Spirit."
Ruo Yu, another creature but one of land rather than water, curiously asked, "Aren’t fish supposed to stay in water? If it comes to the city, won’t it die?"
I wasn’t sure how to answer that question and hesitated before saying, "Maybe it has powerful magic that allows it to temporarily take on human form and move around on land?"
Ruo Yu nodded as if she understood. Then Jian Jie suddenly chimed in, "I think that song had a hint of sadness; this Carp Spirit definitely has a story."
I countered her remark, "But didn’t you say you couldn’t hear it when I asked earlier?"
Jian Jie shot me an eye roll and replied, "I did that on purpose!" She wore an expression that seemed to say I couldn’t do anything about it.
Seeing my annoyance grow, Jian Jie explained further, "At first, I couldn’t hear it. But after you turned back to ask me, I noticed how they were acting and used a little trick to listen in."
So that was it. I had thought she was just bored and messing with me. I asked Solemn to pull over so I could set up a tracking formation; after all, creatures like these weren’t ghosts but rather tricky beings that could be difficult to find. Those with considerable cultivation would have their aura well concealed.
Just as I was busy arranging everything, Jian Jie said, "There’s no need for all this trouble; just follow me!"
I paused my work and asked, "Can you find her?"
Jian Jie replied confidently, "What do you think? Am I wandering around aimlessly with you all at this hour?"
Without any hesitation, Jian Jie walked straight in one direction. Curiously, I leaned closer and asked, "What method are you using? Teach me too!"
Jian Jie pointed to her nose and said, "It's all about a woman's sixth sense. Unless you become a woman, I can't teach you."
Her teasing made me feel a bit regretful for asking. Just then, Solemn approached from behind and casually draped his arm over my shoulder, grinning mischievously. "What's wrong? Feeling down? How about I teach you a few tricks for free, little brother?"
I looked Solemn up and down, then my gaze landed on his crotch. Although the streetlights were dim, I could still see that the area seemed a bit damp. I joked, "Brother, how long have you been holding it in?"
With that, I burst into laughter and ran off, leaving Solemn flustered behind me.
Jian Jie really did nothing at all; she led us through twists and turns until we stopped in front of an inn located in an alley. The inn was converted from an old residence, with only a shabby lightbox beside it that read "You Jia Inn." It looked like a swarm of bugs had made their home inside the lightbox, creating dark clumps.
"Are you sure it's here?" I asked uncertainly. This Carp Spirit had no taste at all. If it wasn't a five-star hotel, at least it should resemble a decent budget hotel. What kind of place was this?
Jian Jie seemed to sense my hesitation and dashed inside. We followed her in, startling the old man dozing at the bar. I shouted, "Solemn, you handle the aftermath."
Jian Jie was quick; she reached the door of a room and without knocking, kicked it open. I stood there dumbfounded—wasn't that a bit violent?
By the time I reached the doorway, I heard sounds of a struggle inside. However, the room was small and crowded with people; it was hard to maneuver. As I peered into the hallway, I noticed someone in a Daoist robe inside.
"Pretty girl," the Daoist said lewdly, "why not follow me? I can guarantee you'll have all the delicacies and enjoy endless nights of revelry."
Jian Jie shouted angrily, "A dog's mouth can't spit out ivory! You'll regret this soon enough; I'll start by cutting out your tongue!"
With her Long Whip, Jian Jie smashed furniture into pieces inside the room, but the Daoist's movements were surprisingly agile as he dodged her attacks. He then pushed off the ground and ran toward the window.
I yelled, "Not good! He's trying to escape!"
To my surprise, when he reached the window, he turned around and raised his hands in surrender. "I give up!"
Only then did I notice that the window was crawling with bugs. Turning around, I saw Hong Chou watching the Daoist with a cold smile.
"What a small world," I remarked with a sneer as I recognized him. He was none other than Qing Kong Dao Ren from that Five Ghosts Wealth Formation scheme.
He seemed to have forgotten me, glancing my way and saying, “I’ve done too many things. May I ask who you are?” His tone was extremely arrogant.
I stepped forward and threw a punch at his stomach, making him double over, spitting out bitter words. “Do you remember the Five Ghosts Wealth Formation?”
Qing Kong Dao Ren exclaimed, “Oh, it’s you!”
At that moment, Ruo Yu came out from the bathroom carrying a woman draped in a fishing net. Jian Jie quickly told us men to close our eyes and found a blanket to wrap around her, complaining, “Are you really that foolish? Can’t you see that a woman’s body shouldn’t be shown off like this?”
Ruo Yu looked confused and let out a small sound of surprise. This left Jian Jie utterly speechless. Jian Jie looked at the fishing net, noticing its shimmering surface, and said to Qing Kong Dao Ren, “I can’t believe you have something like Kun Xian Wang. Honestly, where did you steal this from?” He then swung a punch at Qing Kong’s face.
Qing Kong was bleeding from his nose and said, “This really is mine.”
“Bullshit! If others don’t know, how could I not? This is my family’s property!” Jian Jie retorted angrily, preparing to strike again.
