Bie Wensheng was indeed a bit anxious. After dinner, he urged Gao Ming to go see Wang Lijuan. Gao Ming had no objections, so the two of them returned to Gao Ming's house together. Wensheng changed back into his own clothes. Although his clothes weren't very nice, he felt they fit him well. He took out the letter that Lin Lin had written to Changqing from his pocket; it was intact, and Wensheng smiled as he tucked it away again.
"What is it? Let me see!" Gao Ming tugged at Wensheng's shirt.
"Nothing worth looking at, just a letter," Wensheng replied with a smile, deliberately covering his clothes.
"Of course it's something! Do you think I'm an idiot? I know it's a letter. Let me see who you wrote it to. I've already given Wang Lijuan to you, and yet you're still being sneaky," Gao Ming teased as he tried to snatch the letter from Wensheng.
"I—it's a letter someone wrote to Changqing. I brought this leftover paper with me; otherwise, how could I deal with Changqing?" Wensheng finally admitted when he couldn't resist Gao Ming's persistence.
"Really? That's not okay! I still want to see it," Gao Ming insisted, showing his stubbornness.
"That's someone else's privacy! Do you understand? What are you looking at? If I write a hundred letters and stick them on the wall for you to see, would that satisfy you?" Wensheng firmly refused to let Gao Ming look. He understood the importance of respecting others' privacy. Even though he knew about Lin Lin and Changqing's situation, he still managed not to peek at their correspondence.
"I want to see you hand it over to Changqing myself, and I want to see Changqing open it too; only then will I believe you!" Gao Ming seemed somewhat serious.
"Are you feeling alright?" Wensheng asked.
"I'm fine!" Gao Ming laughed.
"I thought you were coming down with something! How could someone read love letters in front of you? What kind of joke is that?" Wensheng mocked Gao Ming playfully.
"Then just tell me who wrote it to Changqing, okay? If we're brothers, just tell me!" Gao Ming continued his relentless questioning.
"Since we've come this far, if I don't reveal some information, I'd be letting down my brother!" Wensheng chuckled. "It's Lin, from our village; you're not very familiar with her."
"Oh, so Changqing is quite the charmer! Flirting at school and also in the countryside! You country folks!" Gao Ming remarked.
"What? We country folks? You seem a bit like a city dweller! I might resemble one, but you're not—what does it mean for the government to classify towns? Do you know? It means that villages and towns are on the same level. So technically, you're just a country person; you can't count as a city dweller!" Wensheng interrupted Gao Ming by picking apart his words.
"Fine, even if I'm a country person, aren't the people in your village still country folks? Villages are below towns; there's nothing wrong with that! You can't argue with me on this," Gao Ming laughed heartily. At least he felt he had won this round of debate against Wensheng.
"Oh! Haha! Looks like I've lost this round; what are you treating me to tonight?" Wensheng chuckled.
"What? The winner treats the loser? Are you mistaken? Shouldn't it be the other way around?" Gao Ming argued back.
“Did you win? Are you happy?” Wen Sheng asked with a smile.
“Of course! I'm happy, very happy!” Gao Ming replied cheerfully.
“That’s right!” Wen Sheng nodded approvingly.
“How come it’s only right when you say it?” Gao Ming teased, pushing Wen Sheng playfully while trying to suppress his laughter.
“Yes, you’re happy, and I’m feeling down. Shouldn’t you treat me to something to cheer me up?” Wen Sheng said with a grin.
“Ha! So when you win, you want a reward, and when you lose, you want consolation. Why is it all about you?” Gao Ming laughed as he playfully accused Wen Sheng.
“Here’s the deal: you treat me. If I don’t share the details of that romance novel, it’ll be fine,” Wen Sheng joked.
“Tell whoever you want; I don’t care. What if the girls read it? So what?” Gao Ming shrugged. “There’s a girl in our class who got her copy of ‘The Woman at the Monastery’ confiscated by the teacher. Everyone knows about it; you’re not oblivious to that. Why should I care? You’re not thinking about taking down Changqing; instead, you’re trying to take me down.” Gao Ming sounded a bit dissatisfied.
Right! They should take down Changqing, Wen Sheng thought as he aligned himself with Gao Ming’s sentiment.
“We’ve wasted enough time. How about we go check on Wang Lijuan?” Wen Sheng suggested.
“What? Are you thinking about her? Want to sneak a peek? Fine, I’ll take you, but just so you know, once we get there, you can look but can’t touch, got it?” Gao Ming said with a mischievous grin.
“I’d like to touch if I dared! If I did, she’d probably hit me!” Wen Sheng stuck out his tongue.
“You want to touch her? I haven’t even touched her! She’s just another girl,” Gao Ming said teasingly, waiting for Wen Sheng to ask more.
Sure enough, Wen Sheng curiously asked, “Who have you touched? Tell me how it felt!”
“It’s about the same as touching a warm bun. You can imagine and guess for yourself! Haha!” Gao Ming chuckled wickedly.
Real men want to touch beautiful girls; who wouldn’t? Those who don’t are probably off with Prince Charming looking for enlightenment and haven’t returned yet, Wen Sheng thought secretly. If only Wang Lijuan would let me touch her… I’d even jump into the river with Qu Yuan and laugh while doing it. But my brother can swim; Qu Yuan can’t.
As much as he fantasized, actually touching was out of the question now.
So Gao Ming and Wen Sheng headed to Wang Lijuan’s house together. On the way, Wen Sheng pulled out two coins and handed them to Gao Ming. “Go buy some fruit or something for Wang Lijuan. Aren’t you embarrassed to show up empty-handed?”
“Hey! You still know how to be embarrassed! Just two bucks, what can you even buy with that? Just get two buns!” Before Wen Sheng could respond, Gao Ming continued, “You don’t need to, I’ll add a bit more myself!”
After buying some bananas and apples, Gao Ming led Wen Sheng along. It wasn’t long before they arrived at Wang Lijuan’s home.
Because it was cloudy and rainy, business at Wang Lijuan’s family store was not good today. Aunt Qin was sitting behind the counter watching TV. As Gao Ming pushed the door open, he called out, “Auntie, we came to see Wang Lijuan.”
Aunt Qin stood up enthusiastically when she saw them enter. “Well, come on in! What are you bringing? We don’t have anything here!”
“What you have is yours; we just came to show some goodwill!” Gao Ming replied thoughtfully.
“Auntie! What illness does Wang Lijuan have? Has the doctor come to see her?” Wen Sheng asked softly.
“What illness? Her dad really dotes on her; he let her eat as much ice-cold watermelon as she wanted, and it ended up upsetting her stomach. She kept complaining of stomach pain, so early this morning I ran to find a doctor to give her an injection! I also made her some porridge to eat; she’s feeling much better now and is lying in bed!” Aunt Qin said with a hint of complaint. “Come inside; don’t just stand at the door! Wang Lijuan, Wen Sheng and the others are here to see you!” Aunt Qin called out warmly as she pulled Wen Sheng and the others along.
Wen Sheng followed Aunt Qin into Wang Lijuan’s room. He saw someone lying in bed.
