By the afternoon, the weather had cleared beautifully, with colorful evening clouds filling the sky. The warm sunlight shone on people's faces, casting a rosy glow. After the rain, nature appeared particularly fresh, and the air was cool and comfortable.
Changqing, holding a love letter, could hardly hide his inner joy, even though Lin Lin's handwriting was a bit crooked. The letter wasn't very long, but it was enough to make Changqing lose himself in reverie. Against the backdrop of the orange-red clouds, Changqing's smile seemed especially radiant.
"Why are you being so vain?" Wen Sheng chuckled.
"Come on, Lin Lin really seems to have some feelings for me!" Changqing said proudly. "Though she isn't exactly beautiful!"
"Don't be so useless! Yet you're still chasing after her. If she doesn't like you, just say so. I can talk to her when we get back; it's no big deal. That girl won't have trouble finding someone to marry!" Wen Sheng replied somewhat discontentedly.
"Then I guess I'll just settle for it! Hehe!" Changqing grinned.
"Now that sounds a bit more reasonable! Let's head home!" Wen Sheng said with a slight smile.
"I really wish I could go on a date with Lin Lin right now. The sunset is so beautiful!" Changqing sighed.
"Alright, that's enough! There will be plenty of opportunities!" Wen Sheng glanced at the vibrant clouds.
"Brother! Let's go; it's about time! I still need to cook when we get home!" Wen Ling urged from the side.
"Okay, then we'll head back first," Wen Sheng called out to Changqing. "Why don't you come with us?"
"No thanks! I have some things to take care of; you guys go ahead," Changqing replied with a smile.
Wen Sheng accompanied Wen Ling and Lan Lan as the three of them walked home together. The road was lined with lush green trees reflecting the colorful evening clouds, with water droplets hanging from the leaves. A gentle breeze blew, causing them to fall. The asphalt road ahead was a bit muddy, but the scenery was still quite pleasant.
Having Lan Lan, a lovely companion, made it even better. Wen Ling kept teasing them with her playful remarks, and Wen Sheng's mood remained light.
"Brother! I heard from Sister Lan Lan that you have a crush on her! Is it true that you've been sneaking glances at her?" Wen Ling teased.
"Oh! It's true; I've secretly watched her many times. I've been captivated by her beauty and even dream about her!" Wen Sheng laughed heartily.
“Who would believe that!” Lan Lan said, her face flushed. “I didn’t do anything; you were the one peeking at me. And I have no feelings for you, so don’t even think about it!” She pretended to be very serious.
“Oh! So it’s Wen Ling who’s lying. That girl got me to weave half a lie. I’m exhausted!” Wen Sheng shook his head with a sigh.
“You’re just admitting you’re flustered! And you think I have feelings for you? Pfft! Who would believe that? You’ve been secretly in love with Wang Lijuan; everyone knows that! Have some courage, will you? Act like a man!” Lan Lan teased with a smile.
“I am a man, that’s for sure! I don’t need to act like one. As for liking Wang Lijuan, I admit it, but if I don’t pursue her, there’s nothing you can do about it!” Wen Sheng grinned at Lan Lan mischievously.
“Yes! My brother is just giving you a chance; do you understand?” Wen Ling smiled at Lan Lan.
“No thanks! I can’t handle that; I don’t want that opportunity!” Lan Lan covered her mouth and laughed.
“Brother! Then let’s not give her a chance! Haha!” Wen Ling laughed happily.
“Ha ha! Alright, actually, Lan Lan is really outstanding!” Wen Sheng said earnestly.
“Is that so? Regardless of whether it’s true or not, I enjoy hearing compliments!” Lan Lan smiled dreamily.
“Wen Sheng, why don’t you write love letters for girls more often?” Lan Lan sighed.
“My calligraphy is an art piece. I don’t just give it away casually, ha ha!” Wen Sheng boasted.
“Your writing is indeed good; I hope you can become a calligrapher in the future,” Lan Lan said sincerely.
“Let’s hope I can become something! At least something respectable!” Wen Sheng couldn’t help but show a look of disappointment. Whenever dreams and aspirations were mentioned, he always appeared helpless!
“Brother, I believe in you. You will achieve something; I have faith in you!” Wen Ling said with a determined expression.
“I believe too! Don’t be discouraged; things are tough now, but we will support you!” Lan Lan added enthusiastically.
Perhaps the weak could gain some sympathy and support. In their eyes, Wen Sheng wasn’t living very happily right now. They wanted to offer him comfort and encouragement, but achieving greatness was no easy feat; it required countless blood, sweat, and tears.
“I will! For today’s sake! For Wen Xin, I absolutely won’t die. Even if I can’t achieve anything, in the end, I’ll ask fate what it has in store for me!” Wen Sheng’s face showed a determined expression, illuminated by the evening glow, making it appear somewhat radiant.
A cloud drifted by again, and Wen Sheng looked up at it.
Before long, he arrived at Wen Ling’s house. After parting ways with them, Wen Sheng walked alone on the road, surrounded by a serene atmosphere, with the evening scenery appearing quite pleasant.
When he reached the intersection, a girl was waiting for him.
“Er Ge!” Wen Xin ran up to Wen Sheng. “It’s bad! Dad is angry! What did you do with the 150 yuan you took from the Wood Factory?”
“Oh! It shouldn’t be a big deal. I worked there too; that money should be mine!” Wen Sheng felt somewhat justified as he spoke slowly.
“But Dad is really mad. It seems like he won’t let this go. You should hide at Changqing Brother’s house! I’m afraid Dad might hit you!” Wen Xin said with concern.
“It shouldn’t come to that!” Wen Sheng lowered his head and asked.
“No way! From the look on Dad’s face, he will definitely hit you! Er Ge, just listen and hide for now!” Wen Xin insisted, trying to sound mature as she advised her brother.
“Are you sure Mom didn’t send you to tell me this?” Wen Sheng asked cautiously.
“No! I saw Dad come home looking really angry. Mom didn’t dare say anything at home, so I ran out to tell you!” Wen Xin replied eagerly.
“What if Dad finds out that you warned me and takes his anger out on you?” Wen Sheng held onto Wen Xin’s hand.
“Wen Xin is tough! It’ll be fine!” she replied with a forced smile.
Knowing his father well, Wen Sheng quickly realized that if he avoided this situation and his father took it out on Wen Xin, things would get complicated. Is my toughness any match for hers? Wen Sheng pondered.
“It’ll be fine; don’t worry, I won’t get hit!” Wen Sheng pretended to be confident.
“You’re not listening!” Wen Xin said angrily. “When he hits you, don’t expect me to intervene!” She turned her face away, pouting.
“Hey! You’re still upset, don’t worry, I’m fine! Come on, get in the car, be good!” Wen Sheng said as he lifted Wen Xin into the vehicle and pushed her gently.
Wen Sheng liked to push her around in the car. Wen Xin also enjoyed being pushed by her brother, but she loved it even more when he carried her on his back.
“Brother, you should just stay out of it! Everything will be fine when we get home tomorrow!” Wen Xin turned her face to look at Wen Sheng.
“Trust me! It’ll be okay; Dad won’t hit me now!” Wen Sheng pretended to be confident.
Though he said that, Wen Sheng knew deep down that getting punished was inevitable; it was just a matter of how severe it would be.
As soon as Wen Sheng arrived home, he walked into the house and saw his father sitting there.
“What did you borrow money for? Where did the money go?” Wen Sheng's father shouted loudly.
Wen Sheng lowered his head in silence, while Wen Xin trembled beside him, too scared to make a sound. Their mother stood by timidly, not daring to speak, and their grandmother rushed out in a panic upon hearing the commotion.
