"En!" Jia Ao said indignantly. "My mom is really confused. Wen Xin is doing well in school, yet she insists on sending her to work at my uncle's house!"
"The age is just not appropriate; the child's body is still developing. I was planning to send her back in a couple of days. During meals, she always cries and misses home! Isn't that right?" Huang Ge smiled at Wen Xin.
"Hehe!" Wen Xin lowered her head and chuckled, "I miss home! I haven't seen my brother in such a long time!"
"Now you can go home! Once you're back, focus on your studies and aim for college in the future!" Huang Ge praised her.
"Wen Xin is actually quite good at studying!" Jia Ao also complimented her.
Wen Xin felt a bit shy upon hearing the praise, lowering her head and fiddling with her fingers.
"Wen Xin, have you eaten enough?" Huang Ge asked with a smile.
"I'm full! I haven't had such good food in ages!" Wen Xin replied cheerfully.
Huang Ge's face turned slightly red, but fortunately, no one paid much attention. Generally, the meals provided for workers weren't very good; they were just enough to fill their stomachs. As a businessman, Huang Ge was no exception and tended to be a bit stingy when it came to the meals for his workers.
"Why don't you help us make a call, Huang Ge? If we take Wen Xin home, I'm afraid Wen Sheng's father will scold Wen Sheng!" Jia Ao stood up.
"Is there really such a father?" Huang Ge asked in confusion.
"I can't say my uncle is bad! It's just that this is the situation! Please help us out!" Jia Ao replied vaguely.
"What's the problem? It's just a phone call, right? I'll make one!" Huang Ge took out his phone from his pocket.
At that time, mobile phones were still rare and considered luxury items. Huang Ge's phone had a blue screen and cost over 1,000 yuan when he bought it—enough to cover more than half a year's wages for a laborer.
Huang Ge held his phone with a sense of pride, knowing that neither Wen Sheng nor Jia Ao had one.
"What’s the number?" Huang Ge asked, adopting a boss-like demeanor as he held the phone.
Jia Ao provided his home phone number, and Huang Ge dialed it.
The call was answered by Jia Ao's mother, who was also Wen Sheng's aunt.
"Aunt! Wen Xin is here with me, and it's not working out! She's too young, can't do any work, and she keeps crying! Since Jia Ao is here, why don’t you let him take Wen Xin back?" Huang Ge said with a practiced tone.
"Can't do any work? Why not let her learn slowly? They’re in a hurry at home; just think of it as helping us out! Let her stay with you and work!" Jia Ao's mother replied with a smile.
Wen Xin blinked at Huang Ge insistently, and he nodded before continuing, "Aunt, it’s not that I’m unwilling to help you out; it’s just that Wen Xin is really too young. The experienced workers don’t want to take her on! Here, she can hardly do anything besides eating, and I still have to cover her meals."
"Do you really care about that little money? No way! You must keep her!" Jia Ao's mother insisted.
Huang Ge appeared troubled. He genuinely wanted to keep Wen Xin because they were in urgent need of help, and she worked hard.
"Why aren’t you saying anything?" Jia Ao's mother asked anxiously when she noticed Huang Ge had fallen silent.
"Aunt! I'm really in a difficult position!" Huang Ge admitted sincerely.
"How about this: let our child work without pay for now and learn for a month at your place? Once she learns, we can start paying her. Does that sound okay?" Jia Ao's mother proposed decisively.
"I'll think about it! Aunt, let's hold off for now!" With that, Huang Ge hung up the phone.
“I’m speechless! It seems that your situation is indeed true! I really don’t understand!” Huang Ge said, a hint of grievance in his voice. “Is Wen Sheng’s father also this way?”
“Pretty much!” Jia Ao replied casually.
“What should we do? How about letting Wen Xin stay with me for now? I won’t treat her poorly!” Huang Ge suggested amicably to Jia Ao.
“What do you think, Wen Sheng?” Jia Ao turned to look at Wen Sheng.
“What do you think, Wen Xin?” Wen Sheng looked down at Wen Xin.
Wen Xin had initially been happy, but upon hearing this, she pouted and sulked, coldly saying, “Er Ge, you decide for me!” She turned her face away, no longer looking at Wen Sheng and the others.
“Thank you, Huang Ge, for taking care of Wen Xin! I’ll take her with me now! You’ve done your part!” Wen Sheng stood up to make his final statement.
Wen Xin turned her face back to look at Wen Sheng, blinking her eyes as she waited for him to speak.
“Alright! Wen Sheng, I can see that you really care about Wen Xin!” Huang Ge sighed.
“Of course!” Wen Xin replied with a proud smile.
“It’s getting late! We should head back; otherwise, it will be dark. It’s still quite a distance from our home to Wen Sheng’s.” Jia Ao said with a smile.
“Then I won’t keep you any longer. Do come by to visit when you have time!” Huang Ge said politely.
“Definitely! We’re honored that Huang Ge thinks so highly of us!” Wen Sheng smiled back.
“What are you looking at? Do you think I’m beneath you? Jia Ao and I are good brothers! Of course, I’m also good friends with you; I’m just an ordinary person. Hehe!” Huang Ge laughed, patting Wen Sheng on the shoulder.
“Well then, we’ll head back first!” Wen Sheng said as he pulled Jia Ao towards the door. Just as they reached the entrance, Wen Sheng paused, turned around, and said to Huang Ge, “How about we let Jia Ao cover the bill?”
“No need! You’re the guests; how could I let you spend money?” Huang Ge replied generously.
Jia Ao was about to turn back to offer something in return when Wen Sheng tugged at him, saying, “Then thank you, Huang Ge! We’ll be on our way!”
With that, Wen Sheng and Jia Ao left the town called Huang Ji with Wen Xin, temporarily ending Wen Xin’s working days there.
Jia Ao drove quickly, and Wen Xin tightly wrapped her arms around Wen Sheng’s waist, laughing, “Jia Ao, you drive so well! Wow, it dazzles my eyes!”
Hearing that Wen Xin was dazzled, Jia Ao quickly slammed on the brakes and turned around. “Are you okay?”
“Some dirt got in my eyes! Can you slow down a bit? I’m a little scared!” Wen Xin murmured.
“Hehe, if I slow down, it won’t be fun!” Jia Ao grinned with his distinctive buzz cut. His head was somewhat round, and with the buzz cut and black glasses, he did resemble a gangster.
In their village, Jia Ao always liked being called ‘big brother,’ probably because he watched too many episodes of Young and Dangerous.
“Wen Sheng, come try it; it’s really exhilarating!” Jia Ao said as he got out from the front seat to let Wen Sheng take over.
“I’m not very good at it!” Wen Sheng chuckled.
“He doesn’t know how to drive at all! Hahaha!” Wen Xin laughed widely.
“Ha ha!” Wen Sheng's face turned slightly red.
“This thing is really simple. If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride this! I just got on and started driving, didn’t even need to learn,” Jia Ao said proudly, his dark face showing a hint of arrogance.
“Oh! Let me give it a try!” Wen Sheng said softly.
Jia Ao briefly explained, and Wen Sheng nodded. Then he imitated Jia Ao and got on the motorcycle, starting off very slowly.
“Look how steady my brother is riding, like a snail! Ha ha!” Wen Xin laughed.
“Go faster! It’s fine!” Jia Ao urged from behind.
Wen Sheng began to slowly shift gears and gradually increased the throttle.
“Faster, faster! Yes, just like that!” Jia Ao cheered when he saw the motorcycle reach 60 miles per hour.
“Ah!” Wen Xin let out a sharp scream.
