Wen Xin had gotten her hands on a book that Lin Lin had been secretly reading, which made Lin Lin blush a little. It was always a bit embarrassing for a young lady.
“Lin Lin is shy!” Wen Xin teased with a grin.
“Don’t look at it! You child!” Lin Lin pretended to be the adult.
“What did you think after reading it?” Wen Xin asked with a mischievous smile.
“Do you want to know?” Lin Lin replied, hugging Wen Xin.
“Uh-huh!” Wen Xin nodded with a smile.
“Is this what you wanted?” Lin Lin said as she hugged Wen Xin, kissing and playfully touching her. They frolicked for a while.
“How does it feel?” Lin Lin asked, breathless.
“It’s strange! You’re so shameless!” Wen Xin gasped, lying on the bed, covering her face with Lin Lin’s blanket and laughing uncontrollably.
“Are you going to sleep without your clothes on?” Lin Lin pulled at Wen Xin.
“Uh-huh!” Wen Xin sat up, took off her outer clothes, and snuggled under the covers.
Lin Lin turned off the light and joined her under the blanket.
“Hehe!”
“Haha!”
“It tickles!”
The two girls giggled and played around.
The next morning, Wen Sheng left for class early, and Wen Xin got up early as well to prepare breakfast at home.
“Why hasn’t our mother come back yet?” Wen Hao asked during breakfast.
“I don’t know!” Wen Xin mumbled, a piece of pickled vegetable clenched between her teeth.
“All you know is to ask for this and that!” Wen Sheng's Grandmother said, holding a bowl and looking at Wen Hao. “Look at your sister, so well-behaved! She doesn’t fuss about food or clothes and even knows how to work! Unlike you, who makes it hard for your parents to live.”
“She’s silly!” Wen Hao grinned.
“They're all silly!” Wen Sheng's Father replied gruffly.
Just then, the door creaked open, and Wen Sheng's Mother came in, pushing a bicycle. Her expression was one of helplessness, and the light blue garment she wore was damp with beads of sweat.
“Did you borrow any money?” Wen Hao asked as he set down his bowl and stood up.
“No! Your aunt’s family doesn’t have any money either!” Wen Sheng's Mother said dejectedly.
“Did you even ask them?” Wen Hao pressed with a stern face.
“I did, but they didn’t have any! You can’t expect me to squeeze blood from a stone!” Wen Sheng's Mother’s voice trembled with the threat of tears.
“I don’t care; I want it!” Wen Hao insisted stubbornly.
“Well, if there’s no money, what are we going to do?” Wen Sheng's Mother asked, feeling troubled.
“Go borrow some! Go borrow some!” Wen Hao shouted.
“I haven’t even eaten yet!” Wen Sheng's Mother felt wronged.
“Whether you’ve eaten or not is not my concern!” Wen Hao retorted like a wolf.
“Is this how you speak to your mother?” Wen Sheng's Father interjected from the side.
“Do you want to fight?” Wen Hao glared at his father.
Wen Xin, frightened, hurriedly stood up and took a few steps back, looking on with a worried expression.
“I don’t care about you! I don’t care about you!” Wen Sheng's Father muttered as he turned away.
“You have to care!” Wen Hao insisted relentlessly.
“You’re just pushing people to their limits!” Wen Sheng's Grandmother exclaimed, putting down her bowl and raising her cane.
“I want money!” Wen Hao stated bluntly.
“There’s none!” Wen Sheng's Father replied.
Wen Hao picked up a bowl from the ground and smashed it into pieces, the sound sharp and jarring. Wen Xin quickly ducked, but some shards still flew onto her legs.
“Ah! Woe!” Wen Xin squatted down, hugging her legs and began to cry. The grandmother rushed forward to hit Wen Hao, while the mother hurriedly knelt beside Wen Xin. Seeing blood seeping through Wen Xin's pants, she quickly pressed her hands against the wound. Bright red blood soaked a large area of Wen Xin's pants, and she cried with a twisted expression.
Meanwhile, Wen Sheng's Father seized the moment to leave in a hurry.
“Run away now, but you can’t escape forever!” Wen Hao shouted after him.
“What’s going on in your family?” Hua Yueting rushed in from outside. Seeing Wen Hao standing in the yard and the grandmother scolding him, she felt a pang of sympathy upon noticing Wen Xin crying. She couldn’t understand what was happening in this family! It seemed like she had just returned from the fields; her light red clothes were still damp with dew, and there was wet dirt on the cuffs of her black pants and shoes. Her hair was slightly damp as well.
“Child! What’s wrong with you? How can you be so thoughtless at your age?” she scolded Wen Hao angrily.
“Aunt! Don’t ask! You have no idea how infuriating this is; he keeps deceiving me back and forth!” Wen Hao retorted.
“You want this, you want that—do your parents even have any money?” Yuan's Mother chimed in.
“How could they? How could a father not give his son a motorcycle?” Wen Hao managed to provide an example.
“I’m done talking to you! You’re not worth my time!” Hua Yueting shot a glare at Wen Hao.
“I’ll take Wen Xin to get checked out! Just stop causing trouble!” Wen Sheng's Mother said as she held Wen Xin close.
“Give me money!” Wen Hao shouted again.
“Damn it!” Hua Yueting glared at Wen Hao. “I’ll hit you!”
“I’m scared! Hehe!” Wen Hao chuckled foolishly, but he was quite polite to outsiders.
Wen Sheng's Mother arrived at the village health center, which was also where Wen Yuan worked. Wen Yuan was the village doctor, and his family was relatively well-off, living in a five-room house along the main road of the village. To the east, it was adjacent to a market stall, with a sign hanging in front that read: Village Health Center, in bold black letters.
The door was open, and Wen Yuan was sitting behind a desk reading a book. Behind him was a shelf filled with many medicine bottles, and on the wall hung a large display board featuring health promotion posters and images. By the door, there was a long blue sofa with light floral patterns for patients waiting to be seen.
Upon seeing Wen Xin's Mother arrive with the still-sobbing Wen Xin, he quickly put down his book and came out to greet them.
“Aunt! What happened?” He helped Wen Sheng's Mother sit on the sofa and looked at Wen Xin’s leg, which was bleeding.
“Please take a look at Wen Xin! I don’t know how bad it is; she’s been crying!” Wen Sheng's Mother said with concern as she looked at Wen Xin.
Wen Yuan gently rolled up Wen Xin’s pant leg.
