Lin Lin stepped out and tossed her hair. "I don't agree! You should go back!"
"Big Sister!" The boy stood there, momentarily at a loss.
"You dare to defy me!" Lin Lin's Father shouted.
"I..." Lin Lin felt a bit wronged, her face flushed, unsure of what to say.
"What about this engagement?" the middle-aged man asked, looking troubled.
"There's no problem! The child is just throwing a tantrum!" Lin Lin's Father softened his tone.
"Since it's been decided, let's convert the betrothal gifts into cash!" The middle-aged man said as he and Lin Lin's Father walked into the living room.
"Brother, don't mind Lin Lin; she's just being childish! Here, have some water!" Lin Lin's Mother offered a glass of water to the middle-aged man.
"What are you saying, Sister-in-law? How could I mind? Hehe, the child will be fine in the future! So it's settled then!" The middle-aged man chuckled, while the boy stood behind him like a pillar.
"Then we'll head back now!" They stood up to leave.
"Please stay a little longer!" Lin Lin's Father politely urged them to stay.
"We need to go back and prepare!" The middle-aged man laughed as he took Lin Lin's Father's hand.
The two of them exited Lin Lin's house, and Lin Lin's Father sat in his chair, feeling quite pleased.
Later that evening, Aunt Linlin arrived and handed over 80,000 yuan for the engagement. Just like that, the arrangement was finalized.
News of Lin Lin's engagement quickly reached Changqing, who was furious upon hearing it.
"Gold digger! What love is this?" Changqing angrily slammed his hands on the table and pulled out the letter Lin Lin had written him. He read it twice before tearing it into shreds. Then he set the pieces on fire, watching them turn to ashes. Exhausted, he sank onto his bed. His face was pale. Did he really love Lin Lin? Why did it hurt so much? It felt like a lump was stuck in his heart.
“Is Changqing home?” Wen Sheng shouted while knocking on the door.
“Who is it?” Changqing replied, sounding displeased.
“It’s me! I have something to discuss with you!” Wen Sheng laughed.
Changqing stepped out of the house, looking a bit disheveled. The yard was well-lit, and the Changqing family seemed to be doing well. Their two-story house had a grand entrance, and the yard was spacious, with several black locust trees planted in the corners, their lush leaves swaying gently in the breeze.
“Wen Sheng is here!” Changqing’s younger sister peeked her head out from the second floor.
“Hey! I came to play with your brother! What are you up to?” Wen Sheng asked with a smile.
“Watching a trashy palace drama! It’s all about emperors and empresses! There’s nothing interesting! I’m so bored. Why are you free today, Wen Sheng? It’s been a while since you visited us,” Changqing’s sister, Chang Ru, said cheerfully. She was very pretty and had a bright personality, making her quite endearing!
“A trashy palace drama? You really enjoy that nonsense!” Wen Sheng chuckled.
“Even if it’s trashy, it’s better than commercials! They’re all just selling pesticides; it’s so pointless! Haha!” She laughed, revealing two dimples. “When will Wen Xin be free to come play with me?” she added.
“No problem! I’ll let her know to come over and hang out with you!” Wen Sheng replied happily.
“Great! Tomorrow then! I’ll wait for her at home!” she giggled. Since they were around the same age, the kids always enjoyed playing together. Chang Ru acted like a little princess at home and never did any chores.
“I have some things to discuss with your brother, so I won’t keep you any longer! Go back and watch TV; you’re getting prettier every day!” Wen Sheng said with a smile.
“Pfft! Who are you calling a little girl? As if you’re so much older than me! I’m actually a year older than Wen Xin!” Chang Ru protested slightly. “You always call me a little girl; I’ve grown up!”
“Alright, I won’t call you that anymore! Someone's getting feisty!” Wen Sheng turned to Changqing.
“Hehe! At home, she’s the big sister! No one can mess with her!” Changqing pretended to be relaxed.
“Let’s head out!” Wen Sheng said as he pulled Changqing along.
“What’s going on? It seems so mysterious! You don’t want me to know, huh?” Chang Ru asked, a hint of curiosity in her voice.
“Not suitable for children!” Wen Sheng laughed heartily.
“Who taught you to be so inappropriate, Brother Wen Sheng?” Chang Ru replied with a smirk.
“Alright! It’s none of your business! Go back and watch TV obediently!” Changqing said to her sister.
Changqing and Wen Sheng stepped out of Changqing’s house and found the street to be quite empty.
“Lin Lin wants to see you,” Wen Sheng said softly.
“Isn’t she engaged now?” Changqing retorted unhappily.
“Yes, she is!” Wen Sheng replied in a low voice.
“Then what’s the point of me going? I’ll just pretend I never liked her!” Changqing said, a touch of sadness creeping into her tone.
“Go on! Maybe she has something to say to you,” Wen Sheng urged gently.
“Right, if she breaks up with me, what’s the point of saying she loves me? But she can’t expect me to forgive her! It’s probably just like what I see on TV; I don’t need to go to know what she wants,” Changqing said, looking up.
“So you’re really not going?” Wen Sheng asked, sounding a bit disappointed.
“I don’t want to go! Please tell her I don’t hold any grudges against her!” Changqing feigned nonchalance.
“I’ll head back first! I hope you reconsider and go,” Wen Sheng said.
“It doesn’t mean anything; break-up dialogues are always the same!” Changqing turned away.
After bidding farewell to Changqing, Wen Sheng made his way to the riverside where Lin Lin and Changqing were supposed to meet. There was a large rock nearby. Lin Lin sat closely beside Wen Xin, who was continuously comforting her.
“Er Ge! Where is Qing Ge?” Wen Xin stood up and asked as she saw Wen Sheng approaching alone.
“I haven’t seen him!” Wen Sheng replied, feeling guilty.
“Really! You really haven’t seen him!” Lin Lin stared at Wen Sheng with her watery eyes.
“Really!” Wen Sheng feigned calmness and composure.
“You’re lying to me! You’ve always been lying to me!” Lin Lin sat down lightly, lowering her head as if lost in thought.
“Tomorrow! I promise he will come to see you!” Wen Sheng insisted.
Lin Lin remained silent, her head down as she fiddled with her fingers.
“No need to wait until tomorrow, let’s do it now! Isn’t it just a few lines of dialogue? You do it!” At some point, Changqing had also appeared at the entrance.
