Duan Xia's expression darkened as she walked to the balcony railing, gripping it tightly as if she were about to jump.
“Xiao Yu, if you don’t help your brother, I’ll show you what dying looks like.”
Chen Yu scoffed, a dismissive smile on his face. He didn’t believe for a second that this vain woman would actually take her own life. Besides, even if she did, he wouldn’t care at all. The world would be better off with one less troublemaker.
He grabbed a handful of peanuts and after finishing the last one, he said casually, “If you want to jump, then go ahead. That’s your freedom and right. But let me remind you, this is the third floor. Whether you’ll die from it is uncertain; the chances of ending up paralyzed are much higher. Just look at your current husband—can he even take care of you? Or will your precious son and daughter-in-law be there for you?”
“As for me, don’t count on it.”
Hearing this, Duan Xia felt an overwhelming chill in her heart.
“Xiao Yu, I raised you for eighteen years. Are you really this cold-blooded? Do you have no feelings for me at all?”
“None,” Chen Yu replied almost instinctively. “Ever since you made me take the blame for him five years ago, in my heart, you stopped being my mother.”
Duan Xia hesitated for a moment before retracting her hand from the railing. She had tried to scare him and had knelt down, but now she felt utterly helpless.
Just then, chaotic footsteps echoed from outside the door.
the Xiao father saw Su Youwei approaching with Hat Uncle and immediately turned pale.
Su Youwei took out her keys from her handbag and opened the door.
Duan Xia pointed at Chen Yu and shouted, “You all need to arrest him! He was driving drunk and hit someone before running away! He tricked us into coming here by saying that our family hadn’t gathered in a long time and that we should all have dinner together today!”
The the Xiao Family father and son along with Liu Ru Yan nodded vigorously in agreement.
“This person has such a malicious mind! We came here out of kindness to visit him, and he’s plotting to frame us instead!”
Chen Yu couldn’t help but laugh at their desperate struggle.
“Ding ding ding ding.”
Su Youwei walked over to the sofa, picked up a Toy Bear, touched its eyes, and smiled.
"This is a gift for Chen Yu. Its eyes are cameras. You came here today for a reason, and we’ll find out what that is."
The four members of the Xiao Family's faces changed dramatically upon hearing this. Xiao Jiba rushed into the kitchen, looking for a knife, but found that there wasn't even a glass plate available. Before they arrived, Chen Yu had already put away anything that could be used as a weapon.
Xiao Jiba glanced around and found only chopsticks and a rolling pin left. He grabbed the rolling pin and ran out, shaking it in anger.
"You scheming dog, Chen Yu! I’ll fight you!"
However, as a drunken man who could barely stand, he was quickly subdued by Hat Uncle. Chen Yu squinted and smiled.
"The surveillance footage clearly shows he wasn’t drinking here. He crashed into someone while driving drunk and fled the scene. You all need to investigate this thoroughly."
He sighed as he spoke. "A beast that hasn’t changed in five years needs to be dealt with more harshly this time; if not, maybe it’s time for a complete overhaul."
The Xiao father, furious, reached out to strike Chen Yu, but Chen Yu grabbed his wrist firmly.
"Do you think your car is a Land Rover? You still want to hit someone?"
Duan Xia quickly pulled at the Xiao father's arm.
"Don’t be impulsive; if you get involved too, how will you handle the compensation for your son?"
Grinding his teeth in frustration, the Xiao father reluctantly withdrew his hand.
Xiao Jiba found himself behind bars once again. The Xiao parents kicked Liu Ru Yan out of their home because her child wasn’t Xiao Jiba’s. Liu Ru Yan divorced Xiao Jiba and returned to the Liu Family.
Although her parents felt embarrassed by her return in such a state, they accepted her back since she was their own daughter. Considering her health condition, they reluctantly agreed to let her give birth to the child.
After Liu Ru Yan had the baby and weaned it, she left the child with her parents and ran off to another place.
He claimed to be earning money to support his child, yet he hadn't returned home in years or sent a single penny back. The child seemed more like a product of his parents than anything else. Chen Zhixing, seeing that Chen Yu's company was thriving, decided to retire and enjoy a leisurely life at home.
Duan Xia noticed that the Xiao family's business had been losing money for years. In order to compensate for Xiao Jiba's teenage years, she had taken out a significant amount of money, which visibly lowered their quality of life. They had failed to raise their child properly and blamed each other for walking away years ago. Old grievances resurfaced, leading to heated arguments that escalated into violence, ultimately resulting in their divorce.
The divorce brought unexpected consequences; Duan Xia discovered that the Xiao father was burdened with millions in loans. Initially, she had hoped to secure some retirement funds, but instead found herself shackled with lifelong debt. When they married, the Xiao father had offered her half of his company shares to persuade her to invest money, but now she found it impossible to extricate herself from that arrangement.
Having never held a job or developed any marketable skills, Duan Xia realized she would likely never be able to repay the debts on her own. Her gaze turned toward Chen Yu, who had become a successful young entrepreneur in the city, living in luxury with his high-end car and spacious apartment.
After her divorce from the Xiao father, Duan Xia shamelessly approached Chen Yu's neighborhood. The security guard didn't recognize her and refused her entry, insisting she contact a resident for assistance. Chen Yu and his father had long since blocked her number, making it impossible for her to reach them. In desperation, she attempted to force her way inside, slapping the security guard several times when he tried to stop her.
The guard called the police, and Uncle Hat took her back for a coffee chat. After some stern words about her behavior, they released her, but she still couldn't get in touch with Chen Yu and his father. She then set her sights on Su Youwei.
Su Youwei was a public servant with an easily accessible workplace and couldn't be stopped from meeting Duan Xia. Reluctantly, Su Youwei met with Duan Xia and expressed that whether Chen Yu acknowledged her as his mother was not solely up to him.
Duan Xia became furious upon hearing this. She claimed that she had raised Chen Yu and now that she was old, he had an obligation to support her. She berated Su Youwei for not setting a good example as a public servant and threatened to cause disturbances at her workplace if Chen Yu refused to take care of her.
Later that evening, when Su Youwei went to Chen Yu's house for dinner, she brought up the issue with Chen Zhixing, who became infuriated upon hearing about it. "You all don't need to worry about this; I'll handle it," he declared.
The next day, Duan Xia showed up at Su Youwei's workplace with several relatives, holding banners and staging a sit-in protest. Chen Zhixing drove over and got out of his car holding a fruit knife, striding directly toward Duan Xia. The sight of him sent her relatives fleeing in fear.
Chen Zhixing pointed the knife at Duan Xia's nose and shouted at her furiously.
"You shameless wretch, you used to incite my son to take the blame and go to prison. Now that my son has finally built a family and a career, you actually want to tear his family apart? Today, I swear I'll end you; if it comes to it, one life for another."
