Yun Zhi Yue gasped, "You must be out of your mind!"
Following the official's orders so brazenly left her with no way out. Damn, she really had to consider whether she would survive the day; it felt like she might end up as a wandering ghost in the underworld. That would be such a disgrace to her as a Meng Po, after all, she was a soul guide.
Accompanied by Yue Tong's sinister laughter, the driver of their car was shot dead with a single bullet. The vehicle crashed into a nearby wall, and after the deafening impact, Yun Zhi Yue felt her head spin as she pulled herself up from Yue Tong's embrace.
She quickly turned to check on the man who had held her tightly during the chaos. Yun Zhi Yue's expression was complicated; Yue Tong’s white shirt was stained red, and his face was as pale as snow.
Struggling to support herself on Yun Zhi Yue's arm, they helped each other climb out of the wrecked car and stumbled into a nearby abandoned building amidst the hail of gunfire.
Yun Zhi Yue couldn't understand why Yue Tong insisted on dragging her along when he knew there was no escape. Did he really want her to take the fall for him? But after that crash, why had he protected her first?
As they reached the third floor, Yue Tong could barely hold on; blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. The earlier impact must have injured his internal organs.
Yun Zhi Yue fell silent; she knew Yue Tong wouldn’t survive the day.
They sat side by side under a crumbling pillar, neither speaking a word.
Yue Tong tossed aside his gun and pulled out a dagger, then retrieved a bottle resembling ink from his pocket to soak the blade.
His voice was soft, laced with labored breaths. "Yun Zhi Yue, do you think that tragedy about Xiao Zhi and Xiao Cao is real?"
Yun Zhi Yue looked at him immediately, suspicion in her eyes. "Why do you ask?"
Yue Tong turned his gaze towards her. "Because you seem so concerned about it and keep bringing it up around me. Sometimes I wonder if I am that Xiao Zhi and you are Xiao Cao, destined to be entangled with me in this life."
Yun Zhi Yue let out a sarcastic laugh. "Fine, let's say you are. Now you want to drag me down with you? What do you think about playing out this tragic ending yourself?"
The sound of police sirens grew closer, and footsteps echoed from the second floor.
A satisfied grin spread across Yue Tong's blood-stained face. "The people coming to save you are here, yet I feel utterly content with this outcome. Just endure a little pain."
Suddenly, sharp pain shot through her arm as Yue Tong—this reckless fool—stabbed her left forearm with the ink-stained dagger, pinning it to the pillar behind her.
Before Yun Zhi Yue could utter a word of protest, Yue Tong pressed down firmly on the dagger with one hand while wrapping her other arm tightly around her, pinning her down completely.
With a final parting remark, she said, "A gift for your death. I hope you like it."
Bang! Bang! Bang! The sound of bullets rained down on Yue Tong's back.
Confirming that Yue Tong was beyond saving, the assailants had no time to worry about Yun Zhi Yue and quickly retreated as the police arrived.
Dressed in bulletproof vests, Nan Jing, Zhou Yu, Gang Zi, and the SWAT team rushed to the scene.
As they assessed Yun Zhi Yue's condition, everyone’s pupils constricted in shock. They lifted the nearly destroyed body of Yue Tong, only to find her hand still gripping the dagger that had pierced through Yun Zhi Yue's arm.
[Mission Accomplished!]
Yun Zhi Yue remained silent and unresponsive, even when the rescue team pulled out the dagger. It was as if she couldn't hear the frantic calls of "Miss Yun" echoing around her.
Her thoughts drifted back to that day when Xian Gu had been rendered powerless.
She had said, "It hurts so much."
He had replied, "This is a gift. You must cherish it."
