Lin Xu stood at the entrance of City Experimental Middle School, taking a deep breath and gripping the admission notice tightly in her hand. Her gaze swept over the bustling new students, her heart racing with a mix of excitement and anxiety.
"Did I really do it?" she silently asked herself. "Did I really get into City Experimental Middle School?"
Recalling the day of the Midterm Exam, Lin Xu felt a heaviness settle in her chest. She remembered sitting in the exam room, her palms sweaty and her mind blank. The familiar questions suddenly felt foreign, like demons mocking her.
"No, don't think about that," Lin Xu shook her head, trying to shake off those unpleasant memories. "What matters now is that I'm finally at the same school as Ye Feng."
The thought of Ye Feng made Lin Xu's heart race uncontrollably. She looked around, hoping to spot that familiar figure in the crowd. But there were too many people; she couldn't see clearly.
"Forget it, I should just check in," Lin Xu sighed and dragged her luggage toward the school.
The check-in process went surprisingly smoothly. Lin Xu received her dorm key, school uniform, and a stack of thick new textbooks. Balancing all these items, she struggled up to the dormitory building.
"606, 606... Ah, found it," Lin Xu stood at the door of her dorm room, took a deep breath, and pushed the door open.
Inside, two girls were already unpacking their things. They greeted Lin Xu warmly as she entered.
"Hi, I'm Lin Xu," she said somewhat awkwardly.
"Hello, I'm Xiao Yu," said a girl with a ponytail, smiling brightly.
"I'm Xiao Xiao," added another girl wearing glasses, also smiling and nodding.
Lin Xu felt relieved and began to unpack her belongings. She discreetly observed her roommates, secretly glad that they seemed friendly.
"Lin Xu, are you a transfer student?" Xiao Yu suddenly asked.
Lin Xu paused for a moment, feeling a wave of nervousness wash over her. "Y-yes," she replied softly.
"Wow, you must be really impressive!" Xiao Yu exclaimed. "I heard transfer students have it tough with their exams."
Lin Xu forced a smile but didn't respond. She didn't want to bring up the Midterm Exam; that memory was too painful.
Just then, the dormitory door swung open again, and a stylish girl walked in.
"Hello everyone!" the girl exclaimed loudly. "I'm He Miao! Nice to meet you all!"
Lin Xu looked up and froze for a moment. He Miao? Why did that name sound so familiar?
He Miao seemed to notice Lin Xu as well; her smile suddenly faltered. "Lin... Lin Xu?"
It dawned on Lin Xu that He Miao was a classmate from middle school—the very girl who often mocked her.
"Do you know each other?" Xiao Yu asked curiously.
"Uh... We were classmates in middle school," Lin Xu said awkwardly.
He Miao quickly regained her smile, but Lin Xu could sense that it was somewhat forced. "Yeah, I didn't expect to run into an old classmate here."
Lin Xu lowered her head and continued to organize her things. She could feel He Miao's gaze lingering on her, making her feel uncomfortable all over.
"Lin Xu, how did you end up at City Experimental School?" He Miao suddenly asked, a hint of mockery in her tone. "I remember your Midterm Exam scores weren't..."
"I'm a transfer student," Lin Xu interrupted her, her voice trembling slightly.
He Miao paused for a moment before laughing. "Oh, I see. But transfer students have a tough time with exams, right? How did you manage to pass?"
Lin Xu bit her lip, unsure of how to respond. She didn't want to admit that she got in because her parents paid for it; that would be too embarrassing.
Just then, the dormitory door opened again.
"Students, I'm your counselor," a gentle voice announced. "Please gather in the cafeteria; there are some things to discuss."
Lin Xu sighed in relief and hurried out of the dormitory with the others. She could feel He Miao's gaze following her, which made her anxious and fearful.
"Why does it have to be He Miao?" Lin Xu thought bitterly. "Is my high school life destined to be this difficult?"
The cafeteria was packed with people, and Lin Xu struggled to squeeze in, finding a corner to stand in. She looked around, hoping to spot Ye Feng, but there were too many people to see clearly.
"Everyone, please quiet down," the counselor said from the front. "Now I will announce the class assignments..."
Lin Xu listened nervously, hoping she wouldn't be placed in the same class as He Miao. However, when she heard both her name and He Miao's called together, her heart sank.
"How could this happen..." Lin Xu thought despairingly.
At that moment, she suddenly heard a familiar name.
"Ye Feng."
Lin Xu's head shot up, her heart racing. Ye Feng? Ye Feng is in this class too?
She eagerly scanned the crowd and finally spotted that familiar figure. Ye Feng was standing not far away, seemingly searching for someone as well.
Just then, Ye Feng's gaze met Lin Xu's.
Time seemed to freeze at that moment. Lin Xu looked at Ye Feng, and Ye Feng looked back at her. Their eyes connected in the air as if countless words were exchanged between them.
Ye Feng smiled at Lin Xu and slowly walked over.
"Long time no see," Ye Feng said softly.
Lin Xu felt as if her heart was about to stop. She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but no words came out.
"You... what are you doing here?" Lin Xu finally found her voice.
Ye Feng smiled lightly. "I got accepted. How about you?"
Lin Xu lowered her head, unable to meet Ye Feng's gaze. "I... I'm a transfer student."
She expected Ye Feng to laugh at her like He Miao did, but instead, Ye Feng simply responded with a soft "oh."
"That's great," Ye Feng said. "At least we're in the same school again."
Lin Xu looked up in surprise and saw the gentle smile on Ye Feng's face, a warm current suddenly flowing through her heart.
"Yes, we are in the same school again," she replied softly, unable to suppress a smile.
Just then, He Miao suddenly appeared beside them.
"Oh, isn't this Ye Feng?" He Miao said with a grin. "I didn't expect you to come to City Experimental School too."
Ye Feng politely nodded. "Hello, He Miao."
He Miao glanced at Lin Xu and then back at Ye Feng, a flicker of displeasure crossing her eyes. "Do you two know each other?"
"We were classmates in middle school," Ye Feng replied.
He Miao's smile faltered for a moment but quickly returned. "Oh, that's wonderful. We're all old classmates now; let's look out for each other."
Lin Xu kept her head down, unable to meet He Miao's gaze. She could sense the underlying tone in He Miao's words, which made her uncomfortable.
"Alright, students," the counselor's voice rang out again. "Please follow me to the classroom."
Lin Xu walked with the crowd, feeling a mix of emotions. She was happy to be in the same class as Ye Feng but worried about the trouble He Miao might bring.
"Lin Xu." Ye Feng suddenly called out to her.
Lin Xu turned around and saw Ye Feng smiling at her.
"Welcome to City Experimental School," Ye Feng said softly.
