"Classmates, please stand up first."
The homeroom teacher, Mr. Li, tapped the podium, producing two dull thuds.
"The Midterm Exam is over; it's time to rearrange the seating."
Lin Xu's heart suddenly leaped, like a little rabbit thumping wildly inside her.
She instinctively glanced towards Ye Feng's direction, only to find him…
"Lin Xu, over here!"
A bright voice interrupted Lin Xu's gaze. She turned her head to see a girl in a pink sweatshirt with a high ponytail waving at her, her face beaming with a radiant smile.
Next to the girl stood a familiar figure—Yao Tingting.
"This is your new deskmate, Ji Jiumei," Yao Tingting introduced, pointing at the girl in pink.
"Hello, I'm Ji Jiumei. You can call me Jiumei; it's nice to meet you!"
Ji Jiumei enthusiastically extended her hand, her large eyes sparkling like two black grapes.
Lin Xu was momentarily taken aback before responding and shaking her hand.
"Hello, I'm Lin Xu."
"I know you! You're the top student in our grade! A straight-A student; please take care of me from now on!"
Ji Jiumei said with a grin as she casually pulled out a bag of chips from her pocket and began munching on them with a "crunch crunch."
Lin Xu stared at this outgoing girl in front of her, momentarily at a loss for words.
She had expected her new deskmate to be a quiet and reserved girl, but instead, she found herself paired with someone so… exuberant.
"Tingting, what are you doing here?" Lin Xu asked curiously.
"Oh, I've decided to switch back to the science class," Yao Tingting shrugged nonchalantly.
"Really? Why?" Lin Xu exclaimed in surprise, her eyes wide open.
"I just can't get into those books in the Liberal Arts class; science suits me better," Yao Tingting explained.
"But..."
Lin Xu wanted to say something more, but Ji Jiumei interrupted her.
"Oh come on, what's there to be conflicted about? Everyone has their own aspirations! If Tingting wants to study science, then let her! We should support her!" Ji Jiumei said, munching on potato chips with a carefree expression as if it was no big deal.
Lin Xu looked at Ji Jiumei, feeling a wave of complex emotions surge within her. She suddenly realized that this new deskmate seemed much more mature than she had initially thought.
"Alright, everyone, please take your seats. Class is starting!"
Old Li's voice rang out again, breaking the conversation among the three of them. Lin Xu and Ji Jiumei sat together and began their journey as deskmates.
"What snacks do you like? I have plenty here; want to try some?"
Not long after they sat down, Ji Jiumei leaned over and asked quietly.
Lin Xu looked at the pile of snacks on her desk and couldn't help but smile helplessly. "I'm not hungry, thanks."
"Oh, okay then."
Ji Jiumei didn't press further and continued to snack on her own. Lin Xu secretly observed this new deskmate and found that although she appeared carefree, she was actually quite thoughtful. During class, she listened attentively and occasionally took notes. Once class was over, she transformed back into that lively girl, mingling with the classmates around her.
"Hey, Lin Xu, are you close with Ye Feng?"
During lunch break, Ji Jiumei suddenly asked.
"Huh? Not really, why do you ask?"
Lin Xu's heart skipped a beat as she feigned calmness in her response.
"I feel like he treats you differently."
Ji Jiumei rested her chin on her hand, pondering thoughtfully.
"Really? Isn't he nice to everyone?"
Lin Xu countered, though she felt a twinge of nervousness inside.
"That's true, but..."
Ji Jiumei hesitated, her words lingering in the air.
"What is it?" Lin Xu pressed.
"Nothing much, just thought you two seem quite compatible," Ji Jiumei replied with a smile, choosing not to elaborate.
Yet, Lin Xu felt a small stone drop in her heart, sending ripples of emotion through her.
During afternoon gym class, Ji Jiumei had to take a leave due to stomach cramps from her period. Lin Xu went to the infirmary to get her some medicine, but ended up being late and was punished with five laps around the track.
"Huff... huff..." Lin Xu gasped as she ran on the field.
She couldn't help but grumble to herself, "That Ji Jiumei is such a hassle!"
But then she reconsidered; there was something endearing about this troublesome girl.
"Hey, do you think Lu Ming likes Xia Mo?" Ji Jiumei asked while eating lunch, her curiosity piqued.
Lin Xu recalled the boy who always quietly followed Xia Mo around and nodded.
"I think so too; his gaze towards Xia Mo is different."
"Exactly! Last time Xia Mo was sick, Lu Ming was frantic, running around to take care of her—more concerned than her own mother!" Ji Jiumei animatedly recounted, as if she had witnessed it firsthand.
Listening to her friend, Lin Xu's thoughts drifted to Ye Feng. Would he care for her like that?
"Hey, what about Ye Feng? Does he have someone he likes?" Lin Xu asked tentatively.
"Ye Feng? He seems nice to everyone," Ji Jiumei pondered for a moment before responding.
Lin Xu's heart sank a little at that answer.
"By the way, did you know? One time Ye Feng gave up money he found on the ground just to have a bite of sweet and sour fish!"
Ji Jiumei suddenly seemed to remember something and said with a smile, “Oh? Is that really a thing?”
Lin Xu couldn't help but laugh as well. “Of course! We were all in stitches. He really went all out just to eat!”
Ji Jiumei laughed so hard she nearly doubled over. Lin Xu joined in, and the classroom was filled with a cheerful atmosphere. She suddenly felt that this new deskmate wasn't so bad after all.
During the afternoon study period, Ji Jiumei pulled Lin Xu to watch the movie "Initial Daze of First Love."
“I’ve seen this movie several times, and I cry every single time,” Ji Jiumei said while wiping her tears.
Lin Xu was also deeply moved by the film's plot. Watching the interactions between the male and female leads made her think of her own feelings for Ye Feng, and she began to nurture some different emotions within her heart.
“What do you think it feels like to have a crush on someone?” Lin Xu asked softly after the movie ended.
“Hmm… It’s that feeling of wanting to get close but being too scared to, wanting him to know but fearing he might find out,” Ji Jiumei pondered before responding.
Lin Xu gazed out the window and happened to see Ye Feng passing by in the corridor. She suddenly felt that she could no longer just quietly observe him like before.
“Jiumei, do you think it takes courage to love and be loved?” Lin Xu turned her head and asked earnestly.
“Of course! Whether it’s loving or being loved, it requires a lot of courage,” Ji Jiumei affirmed with a nod.
Lin Xu gazed thoughtfully out the window, silently contemplating: “Ye Feng, I think… I might like you a little.”
