The rhythm of their escape had become almost instinctual. Erin and Chen Rui surged through the underground water, their bodies already exhausted, but their willpower propelled them forward. They navigated through deep stretches of water until they finally reached a dry patch of ground, where an old, seemingly abandoned track lay ahead.
"We need to rest for a moment; otherwise, we won't be able to continue," Erin whispered, her voice tinged with fatigue.
Chen Rui nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings with vigilance. They could afford to hide here for a short while, but he knew that the Old Forces were relentless; they could not let their guard down.
Just as they prepared to take a brief respite, a faint sound of footsteps echoed from the end of the track. The noise was subtle, but in the silence of the underground tunnel, it rang out clearly. Chen Rui and Erin quickly held their breath and focused their attention in the direction of the sound.
"Don't be alarmed; it's me." A low voice emerged, carrying a note of calmness.
From the shadows stepped a man dressed in a gray trench coat. His eyes conveyed determination, and faint scars marked his face, hinting at countless battles endured. He nodded at Chen Rui and Erin, signaling them to relax.
"You are..." Chen Rui stared at him in surprise, filled with questions. He did not recognize this man, yet there was no hint of hostility in his demeanor.
The man spoke slowly, "My name is Zhao Qifeng. I used to be an informant for the Special Zone. I've seen the Old Forces' methods before and understand your predicament. They will stop at nothing against you because they believe you hold crucial evidence, correct?"
Upon hearing the term "crucial evidence," Erin and Chen Rui exchanged startled glances. It was clear that Zhao Qifeng was well aware of their situation and even had knowledge of the Old's schemes. Yet they had never heard of him before.
Seeing their hesitation, Zhao Qifeng smiled slightly and said softly, "I know you don't trust me, but I am familiar with the Old's tactics. If you want to escape his grasp, your strength alone won't suffice. What you need now is assistance, and I happen to know a way out."
Erin frowned, still on guard. "Why should we trust you?"
Zhao Qifeng's expression turned serious as he replied quietly, "I know what evidence you possess. To expose the Old's secrets, you need to get that evidence into the hands of higher-ups outside the Special Zone. However, the Old has long since laid traps within the Special Zone, waiting for you to walk into them. If you keep running like this, you'll eventually be caught."
Erin and Chen Rui exchanged another glance, uncertainty flickering in their eyes. They understood that Zhao Qifeng was not merely trying to frighten them; they had faced numerous dangers along their journey, and the Old's methods were insidious. Even if they found temporary refuge, escaping from his control entirely seemed impossible.
"So you can lead us out?" Chen Rui asked calmly while maintaining his vigilance.
Zhao Qifeng nodded. "I have a secret passage that can take you out of the Special Zone. This route is unknown to the Old Forces."
Erin furrowed her brow again, still skeptical. "Why do you want to help us? The Old's power is vast; aren't you afraid of being implicated?"
Zhao Qifeng chuckled softly, a glint of coldness in his eyes. "I have a long-standing grudge against the Old. He killed my family and imprisoned me for years until I managed to escape by sheer luck. Now I am merely a man seeking vengeance; I have always looked for opportunities to expose his crimes. If you can deliver that evidence outside the Special Zone, it would be half my revenge."
Hearing these words eased some of Chen Rui and Erin's wariness. The hatred reflected in Zhao Qifeng's gaze was palpable; clearly, his enmity with the Old was deeply rooted.
"What should we do next?" Chen Rui finally asked, his expression calm yet resolute.
