Zhao Qifeng nodded, signaling for them to follow, and led the two towards the other end of the underground track. As they walked, he spoke in a low voice, "This track is part of the old iron network of the Special Zone, which has been abandoned due to years of neglect. At the end of the line, there’s a secret exit where we can find a route to the outside world."
The three of them navigated through the abandoned tracks, surrounded by dilapidated facilities and scattered equipment, with the air thick with a putrid smell. After a while, they arrived at a rundown warehouse. Zhao Qifeng pointed to an iron door in one corner and whispered, "This is one of the exits to the outside. At the end, there’s an old freight elevator that we can use to reach the surface."
Chen Rui nodded and quickly pushed open the iron door, leading Aileen inside while Zhao Qifeng kept watch behind them.
However, as soon as they entered the warehouse, a piercing alarm suddenly blared from all around them, and red warning lights flickered on at the entrance. Zhao Qifeng's expression changed instantly as he cursed under his breath, "Damn it! There’s still a sensor alarm set up here!"
Chen Rui and Aileen were startled as well; they hadn’t anticipated that there would be an alarm system at the exit. Clearly, precautions had been taken to prevent anyone from escaping by re-establishing surveillance over these old facilities.
"Quickly! We need to get through the elevator before they arrive!" Zhao Qifeng urged.
The three dashed towards the elevator. Zhao Qifeng pressed the activation button, and the elevator began to ascend slowly. However, the alarm grew louder, and faint footsteps of pursuers echoed from the entrance of the warehouse.
"Just hold on a little longer," Zhao Qifeng said quietly, gripping a dagger tightly in his hand, ready for battle at any moment. His gaze was cold and determined, as if he had already prepared for the confrontation ahead.
Finally, the elevator reached the surface. As soon as the doors opened, they rushed out into an abandoned industrial area overgrown with weeds. The old factory structures loomed ominously in the night.
"If we go this way, we can reach the edge of the city," Zhao Qifeng said softly, guiding them along a hidden path.
Chen Rui and Aileen quickly followed, filled with a glimmer of hope. However, it wasn’t long before they heard the roar of vehicles approaching from behind; clearly their pursuers had not given up.
"I'll hold them off; you two keep moving!" Zhao Qifeng suddenly stopped, determination flashing in his eyes. He pulled out a small explosive device from his pocket and tossed it to Chen Rui. "This can blow open the iron door ahead. Use it to escape; I’ll do my best to delay them."
Chen Rui froze for a moment, wanting to say something but watching as Zhao Qifeng resolutely turned to face their enemies behind him.
"Don’t worry about me!" Zhao Qifeng shouted back fiercely, his eyes sharp as blades. "I want those Old dogs to know that even a desperate man won’t easily surrender!"
Chen Rui and Aileen gritted their teeth and rushed forward. They understood that Zhao Qifeng was sacrificing his life to buy them time.
Gunshots and shouts erupted behind them, followed by a deafening explosion. The flames lit up the night sky alongside Zhao Qifeng's furious roar as his figure gradually disappeared into the blaze.
Chen Rui and Aileen did not look back; they ran through the darkness of the abandoned industrial area with tears brimming in their eyes. They knew that Zhao Qifeng had given his life for them, and that their challenges were only just beginning.
In that dark night, their steps were resolute and unwavering as a stronger conviction ignited within them: no matter what it cost, they would reveal the truth, expose Old's crimes to everyone, and ensure that their fallen comrade received justice.
