After escaping the borders of the Special Zone, Chen Rui and Erin found a moment of safety. The night enveloped the wilderness, and the two leaned against a wall, gasping for breath, their bodies pushed to the limit. Yet they knew this was not the end; it was merely the beginning.
Erin looked up at the distant horizon, her expression weary but resolute. "We have successfully left the Special Zone, but we still need to find more evidence of Old Crimes to expose the entire evil force behind the Special Zone."
Chen Rui nodded, his gaze intense. "The information Zhao Qifeng sacrificed his life for is just the tip of the iceberg. The Old Crimes are deeply rooted; with our current intelligence alone, we won't be able to bring him down completely."
After a brief moment to gather themselves, they decided to press on. In the wilderness, they chose a concealed path leading toward the city center of the outside world. Erin understood that they needed to find reliable contacts in order to ensure that their evidence would be transmitted securely.
After several hours, they finally arrived at a remote town. The town was dimly lit and eerily quiet, as if it were a secluded paradise cut off from the outside world.
"We should rest here for the night and continue our journey at dawn," Chen Rui said softly, a hint of vigilance in his eyes. He knew that although they had temporarily escaped the Special Zone, the Old Forces would not easily give up.
Erin nodded in agreement. They found a rundown inn and registered under false identities. For safety's sake, they carefully chose a room on an upper floor to avoid being easily discovered by strangers.
In the dead of night, the inn was dimly lit, with only occasional sounds of wind and rustling leaves outside. Erin lay on the bed with her eyes closed, pretending to sleep, but Zhao Qifeng's voice and his resolute gaze lingered in her mind, stirring waves of emotion within her.
"Zhao Qifeng," she whispered softly, as if she could feel his bravery and determination in his final moments.
Just then, Chen Rui suddenly sensed something amiss. He perked up his ears to listen closely; faint footsteps were approaching their room from the hallway, as if someone was stealthily drawing near. Chen Rui instantly heightened his alertness and signaled Erin to remain silent.
They hid in the shadows of the room, holding Wu Lan at the ready for any sudden developments. Moments later, the footsteps stopped outside their door, and the doorknob moved slightly as someone attempted to open it.
Erin held her breath, her heart racing. She realized that their pursuers might have tracked them here; there was no room for respite this time.
The stranger outside seemed to notice that the door was locked and gently knocked a few times before a low voice called out: "Chen Rui, Erin, is that you? Don’t be afraid; I’m an ally."
Chen Rui and Erin exchanged glances filled with confusion. They hadn’t informed anyone of their whereabouts; who could this self-proclaimed ally be?
"My name is Song Jianhui," came the voice from outside. "I’m an old friend of Zhao Qifeng. Before he passed away, he left a message for me to come here and assist you." The voice continued with an urgent tone.
Erin relaxed slightly but remained cautious. She looked at Chen Rui and whispered, "Do you think we can trust him?"
Chen Rui furrowed his brow in thought for a moment before deciding to test him. He carefully opened the door just a crack to observe what was outside. A middle-aged man stood there in plain work clothes, his expression calm and composed.
"Are you really Zhao Qifeng's friend?" Chen Rui asked coldly, still on guard.
Song Jianhui nodded and replied softly, "I understand you may not trust me, but Zhao Qifeng did leave me a message instructing me to assist you after your escape from the Special Zone. He said you hold evidence regarding Old Crimes that requires external support to expose the truth."
Erin studied Song Jianhui's demeanor and gradually felt a flicker of trust forming within her. After all, Zhao Qifeng had paid with his life for them; this man mentioned Zhao Qifeng’s charge and likely wasn’t just an imposter.
