The temperature in the Core Area of the heart device was scorching, as if one were standing in a hellish furnace. Chen Rui's body was tense, feeling the radiation and heat gradually eroding him, but he did not retreat; he pressed on resolutely deeper into the core chamber. The air around him was thick with a pungent chemical smell, and the red warning lights flickered incessantly, the self-destruct countdown of the device glaringly bright.
"Chen Rui, your time is running out!" Lin Xi's urgent voice crackled in his earpiece, laced with unmistakable tension and concern. "The energy connection point of the core chamber is just ahead on your left, but if you cut it off, you may not be able to escape safely."
Chen Rui's gaze was unwavering as he replied calmly, "Understood. My mission is to ensure the safety of the Special Zone; my own life is of no concern." He took a deep breath and focused on the flickering energy connection point ahead, quickening his pace without hesitation.
You Lang was held captive by Squad members beside the control panel, bloodied yet still wearing a cold smirk. He rasped, "Chen Rui, what does it matter if you cut off the energy? This land will ultimately be destroyed; your efforts are nothing but futile!"
Lin Xi shot an angry glare at You Lang and shouted back, "Your madness will not succeed! The residents of the Special Zone will not let your delusions destroy their home!" You Lang, however, seemed unfazed by Lin Xi's fury; instead, a deep coldness shone in his eyes. "Your hope is merely a pawn in my hand."
As time ticked away second by second, the alarm grew increasingly frantic, and the countdown neared its end. Chen Rui finally reached the energy connection point of the core chamber. Before him lay a complex control panel and energy circuits, their flashing lights casting a red hue across his face. Just as he was about to sever the energy supply, Lin Xi's voice came through his earpiece, slightly choked: "Chen Rui, please promise me you'll come back alive."
Hearing Lin Xi's voice made Chen Rui pause for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure and replied firmly, "Don't worry; I will." He steadied his hands on the energy circuits and pulled down on the connection lines with all his strength. Suddenly, the entire heart device shook violently as the internal red light dimmed rapidly, a tremendous roar emanating from within.
The self-destruct sequence of the Energy Core was forcibly halted, but the tremors did not cease. The supporting structures within Heijing began to collapse under energy control failure; debris fell continuously from above while heavy dust filled the air. Chen Rui quickly donned an oxygen mask and dashed out of the core chamber.
Lin Xi's voice became urgent in his earpiece: "Chen Rui! The passage is collapsing; you must find the nearest exit! I'll guide you!"
Following Lin Xi's directions, Chen Rui navigated through shaking corridors and passages. The sounds of explosions and falling rocks behind him urged him to quicken his pace. The team members near the control room had long since evacuated but were waiting at the passage entrance for Chen Rui.
"Captain! This way!" one team member called anxiously, waving him over. Chen Rui sprinted toward the exit and finally leaped out of Heijing's passage at the last moment. With a deafening crash, Heijing's entrance completely collapsed, dust swirling into the air as it was buried deep underground as if this dangerous place had never existed.
The team members gathered around him as Lin Xi approached with a mix of emotions in her eyes—relief intertwined with unmasked worry. She took a deep breath and softly said, "Chen Rui, you did it."
Chen Rui nodded; though calm in demeanor, fatigue marked his expression as he replied gently, "We’re not finished yet. You Lang’s conspiracy extends beyond Heijing. The truth behind this codename 'Heart' may conceal even deeper secrets."
Lin Xi paused slightly: "Are you saying that Heijing is just the tip of You Lang's iceberg?"
Chen Rui gazed into the distant night sky, his eyes shining with depth: "Yes. The threats facing the Special Zone are far greater than we imagine. Everything You Lang said while being escorted was not mere ramblings. His organization is still plotting in secret; another threat may already be looming."
The team fell into brief silence as they realized this battle was far from over. They had destroyed one of You Lang’s strongholds but knew that greater challenges might be approaching. The safety of the Special Zone still required their vigilance.
Chen Rui lifted his head and looked resolutely at the dark clouds drifting across the night sky as he murmured: "Whatever their next move may be, we will be ready. The Special Zone will not let anyone destroy it easily."
