Although the Hei Jing Operation had temporarily come to a halt, the unease in Chen Rui's heart did not dissipate. After a brief adjustment, he immediately summoned the members of his Squad to convene at the Special Zone Intelligence Center to analyze the follow-up intelligence regarding the Hei Jing Operation. He knew that You Lang and his organization would not easily give up; Hei Jing was merely the tip of the iceberg in their grand scheme.
Inside the intelligence room, the walls were adorned with profiles and activity maps of You Lang Organization members, with red lines crisscrossing and marking various key locations within the Special Zone. Lin Xi stood before the map, diligently analyzing the latest collected information. Her gaze was focused and calm, yet there was an underlying hint of worry etched on her brow.
According to our intelligence, You Lang's organization does not operate independently but is part of a larger and more secretive dark network. Lin Xi's voice carried a cold edge as she continued, "We refer to them as the Dark Current. This organization has infiltrated every level of the Special Zone, and there may even be personnel within the Special Zone colluding with them."
Dark Current? Chen Rui silently repeated this name, You Lang's cold smile flashing in his mind. What was this organization's purpose? Was it for the resources of the Special Zone, or did they have ulterior motives?
Lin Xi nodded and added, "From what You Lang mentioned about the Heart Plan, their goal is likely to destabilize the Special Zone, disrupt order throughout the Area, and profit from the ensuing chaos. The energy technology and advanced science of the Special Zone are their primary targets."
Upon hearing this, the team members exchanged glances, realizing the gravity of the situation. If the Dark Current Organization aimed to subvert the Special Zone, then the safety of the entire region would face immense threats, potentially even sparking a war.
After a moment of contemplation, Chen Rui said, "We cannot remain on the defensive; we must take proactive measures to completely dismantle the core of Dark Current. Lin Xi, do we have any further leads on them? Their strongholds, funding sources, or even identities of key members?"
Lin Xi spread several documents across the table and pointed to one file. "We are tracking a key figure known as Dove. He is a high-ranking member of the Dark Current Organization responsible for infiltration and intelligence work in the Special Zone. Dove operates with extreme caution; his whereabouts have never been discovered. However, he is You Lang's direct superior and should be aware of the organization's core plans."
Dove. Chen Rui fixed his gaze on that name in the file. This mysterious codename seemed to carry an ominous connotation, hinting at an impending clash that would be more intense.
"Currently, our only lead is that Dove may recently appear near the Neutral Zone," Lin Xi continued. "Although it is not under Special Zone jurisdiction, it has always been a refuge for various factions. If Dark Current has established a base there, capturing Dove will be quite challenging."
Chen Rui nodded with increasing determination. "Then we will head to the Neutral Zone. I need you all to prepare everything necessary. Lin Xi, arrange resources to ensure we can operate covertly when we enter the Neutral Zone. We cannot alert them."
"Understood." Lin Xi immediately began retrieving relevant information on her computer while coordinating operational details with the Intelligence Department.
A few hours later, the Special Operations Team was ready and quietly infiltrated into the Neutral Zone. In this complex Area, any unexpected event could trigger an unpredictable conflict. The team members were assigned their tasks as Chen Rui, Lin Xi, and Squad members ventured into the heart of the Neutral Zone in search of clues about Dove.
On the streets of Neutral Zone, neon lights clashed with dim alleyways as pedestrians hurried by; an eerie and tense atmosphere hung in the air. Here resided individuals from various backgrounds—Black Market Traders, Information Brokers, and even defectors from the Special Zone. Chen Rui led his team discreetly through alleys while continuously searching for traces of Dove.
Finally, they pinpointed a hidden bar that intelligence indicated was a frequent haunt for Dove. To avoid raising suspicion, Chen Rui and Lin Xi disguised themselves as ordinary travelers and dispersed into the bar while team members waited outside for immediate support.
The air inside the bar was thick with alcohol and tobacco smoke; under dim lighting, various mysterious figures whispered among themselves in an atmosphere that felt both secretive and tense. Chen Rui and Lin Xi found a corner table where they observed their surroundings intently. After a while, a man dressed in a black trench coat entered—his gaze sharp and demeanor alert.
"Is that Dove?" Lin Xi whispered uncertainly.
Chen Rui shook his head slightly as he studied the man's expressions and movements. "We can't be sure yet. We need further confirmation."
The two waited patiently while observing every subtle action from Dove. Just then, Lin Xi received a discreet message on her phone: Target confirmed as Dove.
Chen Rui nodded in acknowledgment and signaled Lin Xi to remain calm; they could not alert him prematurely. They needed to wait for an opportune moment to draw Dove away from here.
At that moment, Dove suddenly stood up and headed towards a back door. Chen Rui and Lin Xi exchanged glances before quickly getting up to follow him into the dimly lit back alley of the bar where they stealthily approached Dove while Lin Xi's hand instinctively moved toward her waist where her tranquilizer dart was holstered.
However, it seemed Dove had sensed something amiss; he abruptly turned around with eyes sharp as an eagle's fixed on them: "Who are you?"
Knowing they could no longer maintain their disguise, Chen Rui decisively replied, "We just want to talk to you, Dove."
The Dove let out a cold laugh and slowly stepped back. "You dogs from the Special Zone really think I would be easily caught by you?"
Before the words had left his mouth, he turned and swiftly dashed deeper into the alley, clearly having prepared for his escape. Chen Rui and Lin Xi quickly followed, chasing after him, but the alley was narrow and complex, making the Dove's figure flicker in and out of sight around the corners.
Suddenly, Lin Xi's eyes lit up as he pointed ahead. "Chen Rui, there's the Squad's encirclement up ahead! The Dove has nowhere to run!"
However, as they rounded the last corner, they found the Dove standing next to Mo Nan, who was holding a Sniper Rifle with its barrel aimed directly at Chen Rui and Lin Xi.
It seemed that the hunters had become the hunted. The sound of the Dove's cold laughter echoed through the alley.
Chen Rui cursed inwardly; it was clear that their opponents had already set up an ambush. The sniper beside the Dove sneered as he slowly squeezed the trigger. In that instant when the gunshot rang out through the alley, Chen Rui and Lin Xi reacted quickly, leaping in different directions.
