The light at the end of the corridor grew dimmer, while the temperature around them steadily increased, and a sharp chemical smell filled the air. Chen Rui and Lin Xi led their Squad deeper into Shadow City, a subterranean metropolis whose structure was more complex than they had anticipated, resembling a twisted labyrinth.
"This design is disgusting," Lin Xi muttered under her breath, noting the corners and dead ends that seemed deliberately constructed to confuse intruders.
"Perhaps that's the intention," Chen Rui replied cautiously, surveying their surroundings. The design of this underground facility might have been meant to prevent external forces from infiltrating, but now it served as a barrier against hidden currents.
They passed through an abandoned hall filled with broken equipment and fallen ceilings. The ground was littered with debris that appeared haphazardly scattered, but Chen Rui noticed some footprints among the mess.
"These tracks are fresh; they must be nearby," he signaled for the Squad to stop and crouched down to examine the prints closely. There were two types: one set belonged to ordinary boots, while the other was deeper, likely left by Abyss Warriors.
Lin Xi nodded and whispered, "That means we might be facing more than one group of enemies."
Just then, faint whispers and the sound of metal scraping echoed from ahead, as if someone were moving equipment. The Squad quickly concealed themselves in the shadows, peering through a broken wall to assess the situation.
They saw several Dark Flow Armed Personnel pushing a cart loaded with gear slowly through the narrow passage. A raspy voice crackled over their radios, seemingly relaying orders.
"The laboratory Area is secure; we can begin the transfer."
"Transfer?" Lin Xi whispered. "Where are they moving the equipment?"
Chen Rui frowned and lowered his voice. "We need to follow them and figure out their plan."
The Squad stealthily trailed behind the Dark Flow personnel, maintaining a safe distance. Along the way, they noticed that the surrounding corridors were becoming more modernized; newly installed Surveillance Cameras adorned the walls, and parts of the Area were electrified, illuminated by cold white lights.
"This must be the Core Area of the laboratory," Lin Xi remarked.
As they turned a corner, a sharp alarm suddenly blared, its piercing sound reverberating through the narrow corridor. Immediately after, a mechanical voice boomed from a loudspeaker:
"Intrusion alert! All units enter combat mode!"
"We've been discovered!" Chen Rui barked. "Everyone take defensive positions and find cover!"
The Squad quickly dispersed, hiding behind walls and equipment in preparation for an incoming attack. Soon after, a fully armed squad of Darkflow Soldiers appeared at the opposite end of the corridor. Their gear was clearly more advanced; each soldier was equipped with heavy weaponry and bulletproof armor.
"Fire cover! Counterattack!" Chen Rui commanded, and his Squad members immediately opened fire. Bullets and explosions intertwined in the confined space, illuminating the dim corridor like daylight.
Despite their excellent tactical training, the Squad found themselves outnumbered and outgunned. The Darkflow Soldiers employed a new type of Shielding Device that could absorb bullet impacts completely for a short time, making them appear like steel phantoms unafraid of attacks.
"Damn that Shielding Device!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth in frustration. "Where did they get this?"
"Stop complaining and find a way to deal with it!" Chen Rui ordered decisively. "Use explosives; breach their defenses!"
Lin Xi quickly retrieved a high-explosive grenade and accurately threw it toward the center of the enemy formation. The explosion produced a powerful shockwave that finally shattered the Shielding Device, causing enemy soldiers to stagger back.
"Now's our chance! Charge!" Chen Rui shouted as he led the way out from behind cover. The Squad members followed closely behind him, concentrating their fire on weak points in the enemy's formation until they successfully overwhelmed that squad of Darkflow Soldiers.
After the battle concluded, the Squad briefly regrouped and continued deeper into the laboratory.
Minutes later, they entered a vast Experimental Hall. Unlike the previous corridors, this space was designed with modern aesthetics, filled with high-tech instruments and monitoring screens. At the center of the hall stood a massive incubation tank, within which floated an Abyss Warrior undergoing transformation.
These monsters were created here. Lin Xi approached the tank, her eyes filled with fury; such experiments were fundamentally anti-human!
Chen Rui remained silent as he moved toward a Main Control Terminal, attempting to breach the system's firewall. His fingers flew across the keyboard, quickly gaining access to the system interface.
Found it. Chen Rui said in a low voice, all the experimental data is stored in a ton of Servers, but I need more time to download it.
Hurry up; we’ll hold them off. Lin Xi directed the Squad to spread out across the Experimental Hall, setting up defensive positions.
A few minutes later, alarms blared once more. This time, the enemy's movements were more intense, as if the entire underground city was trembling.
This isn’t right! Lin Xi frowned; they’ve sent stronger combat units!
Chen Rui remained focused on operating the terminal, not looking up as he said: I need five minutes; hold them off!
Lin Xi took a deep breath, determination flashing in her eyes: Everyone, prepare for battle! Hold this position!
In the next moment, the massive doors of the Experimental Hall were smashed open with tremendous force as a squad of even more terrifying Abyss Warriors charged in. These monsters were larger than before and equipped with exoskeleton armor and weapons—clearly the ultimate weapons of the dark forces.
Chen Rui gritted his teeth and held on, catching a glimpse of the progress bar on the terminal nearing completion.
Just hold on a bit longer! Chen Rui shouted.
Lin Xi sneered, raising her Rocket Launcher and aiming at an approaching Abyss Warrior before pulling the trigger: Bring it on!
As flames and explosions filled the Experimental Hall, a life-and-death struggle began.
