The Experimental Hall was ablaze with light, the sounds of explosions and sharp metal clashes echoing throughout. The enemy's Abyss Warriors surged forward in waves, their massive forms resembling a torrent of steel, forcing Chen Rui's Squad to retreat step by step.
"Quick! The right flank can't hold!" Lin Xi shouted, her face smeared with the grime and sweat of battle. Her weapon continued to unleash a barrage of fire, suppressing part of the enemy's firepower.
Chen Rui stood at the terminal, his eyes fixed on the progress bar on the screen. The data transmission was nearing completion, but the enemy's assault grew fiercer, leaving them with little time.
"Lin Xi, how's it going?" Chen Rui called out.
"We can still hold!" Lin Xi gasped, covering her teammates as they placed the last few high-explosive grenades at the entrance. She quickly triggered the detonation. With a tremendous explosion, half of the passage collapsed, temporarily blocking further enemy reinforcements.
"This is our only chance to catch our breath; we need to move fast!" Lin Xi said as she reloaded her magazine, a glint of cold determination in her eyes.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the hall, the enemy Abyss Warriors seemed to have entered a berserk state. Their eyes glowed with an eerie red light as their arm-mounted weapons fired lasers relentlessly, shattering cover into fragments.
"What on earth are these things?!" Squad member Wang Chen shouted as he fired back, his voice tinged with unmistakable fear; ordinary weapons were utterly ineffective against them!
"Use electromagnetic pulse grenades! Their armor might rely on electronic systems!" Chen Rui commanded decisively.
Lin Xi swiftly retrieved a specially designed Electromagnetic Pulse Grenade, pulled the pin, and accurately tossed it toward the enemy. When it exploded, a brilliant blue arc crackled through the air, followed by a deafening pop as the armor of an Abyss Warrior emitted sharp crackling sounds before collapsing to the ground, rendered immobile.
"It worked!" Lin Xi whispered. "Keep using electromagnetic weapons!"
"We have a limited supply of EMPs; don't waste them!" Chen Rui reminded her calmly.
Finally, the data transmission progress bar reached its end, and a message appeared on the screen confirming completion. Chen Rui quickly removed the disk, a serious expression crossing his face: they had obtained the experimental data; now it was time to leave.
Lin Xi ran over to him and frowned. "What do we do next? The enemy has sealed off all escape routes; we might be trapped here."
Chen Rui swiftly activated his communicator to contact command center. " Director Zhao, we've secured the core data but are trapped in the Experimental Hall. We need urgent support!"
Director Zhao's voice came through the communicator: "Hold on! We've dispatched a support team; they should arrive in about ten minutes. You must find an exit; we can't come in directly."
Chen Rui gritted his teeth. "Understood."
He turned to Lin Xi and the other squad members and said calmly, "There's no time left; we must break through immediately and follow our contingency plan."
With Lin Xi providing cover fire, the Squad quickly burst out through a side door of the Experimental Hall. This exit led to a narrow tunnel lined with unremoved wiring and abandoned mechanical arms—clearly a logistics passage for the laboratory.
However, they had barely entered the tunnel for two minutes when heavy footsteps echoed behind them. Turning around, they were met with an even larger Abyss Warrior pursuing them; its body towered two stories high, equipped with cannon-like arms and dragging a thick metallic tail behind it.
"What is that thing?!" Wang Chen exclaimed in shock.
"Don't stop! Run!" Chen Rui barked as he aimed and fired at the enemy in an attempt to slow it down.
The Giant Abyss Warrior let out a deep roar and raised its cannon toward their direction. A searing energy beam shot forth instantly, piercing through one side of the tunnel wall in a blaze of fire that nearly struck one of the squad members.
"This won't do! We have to find a way to solve this!"
Lin Xi's gaze locked onto the row of suspended pipes above her. She quickly assessed the situation and concluded: those pipes might contain high-pressure gas or chemicals! If we can cause an explosion, it should be able to block it!
Chen Rui nodded decisively and said, "Got it! Lin Xi, you provide cover while I blow up the pipes!"
Lin Xi immediately adjusted her position, directing her firepower at the head of the Giant Abyss Warrior, relentlessly attacking its sensor points. At the same time, Chen Rui took aim with his Sniper Rifle, precisely targeting the critical connection point of the pipes.
"Closer!" Lin Xi shouted as she continued to suppress the enemy. "It's almost in the perfect position!"
