The shockwave from the explosion swept through the entire corridor, twisting the steel reinforcement in the walls into bizarre shapes. Chen Rui was thrown several meters away, crashing to the ground as a ringing in his ears felt like sharp needles piercing his brain. He struggled to get up, his first instinct to search for Lin Xi.
"Lin Xi! Answer me!" Chen Rui shouted into his communicator, but only intermittent static responded.
Thick smoke engulfed the entire area, nearly obscuring his vision. Chen Rui groped his way toward Lin Xi's last known position, guided by the faint beam of his flashlight, while covering Zhou Zheng behind him with his gun.
"Lin Xi!" There was a hint of panic in his voice.
Suddenly, a weak cough emerged from the ruins ahead. A glimmer of hope flashed in Chen Rui's eyes as he quickly cleared away the debris in front of him. Finally, he spotted Lin Xi lying amidst the rubble, covered in shards, blood trickling down from a wound on her forehead.
"Chen Rui..." Lin Xi opened her eyes, her voice weak but resolute. "I didn’t manage to continue the mission..."
"Don't talk! Let me get you out of here!" Chen Rui gritted his teeth as he began to remove the stones pinning her down, carefully checking her injuries.
Just then, Zhou Zheng's terrified voice came from behind. "Chen Rui! The enemy is coming again!"
Chen Rui turned around to see several Abyss Warriors slowly approaching through the smoke, their glowing red eyes resembling the gaze of death. Behind them loomed a Giant Abyss Warrior, its energy cannon still radiating residual heat, clearly ready to attack again at any moment.
"Damn it!" Chen Rui quickly pulled out his last grenade and hurled it at the enemies.
The blue arc exploded, taking down a few ordinary Abyss Warriors, but the giant mech remained unscathed.
"It has a Shielding Device!" Zhou Zheng shouted, sweat covering his face. "It won’t work on it!"
"Fine, then we’ll have to fight it head-on." Chen Rui clenched his jaw and swiftly adjusted his tactical rifle to high-explosive mode. He exerted all his strength to pull Lin Xi out from under the rubble and propped her against nearby cover.
"You protect her; I'll hold it off!" Chen Rui yelled at Zhou Zheng before standing up and firing frantically at the joints of the giant mech.
The mech let out a low mechanical roar as its massive steel body turned toward Chen Rui, its energy cannon beginning to charge again. A faint glow appeared at the cannon's mouth, gradually swelling into a blinding point of light.
"You’re insane! That thing will turn you to ash!" Lin Xi struggled to rise but was immobilized by pain.
"Shut up! I don’t want to watch you die here!" Chen Rui roared back as he nimbly rolled aside, dodging an energy blast from the mech and firing off another high-explosive round.
The explosion illuminated the corridor like daylight, but the mech’s armor showed little damage. However, its reaction speed seemed momentarily disrupted, its movements slightly sluggish.
"It’s not invincible!" Chen Rui analyzed calmly. "Focus on attacking its Power Core!"
"Power Core?" Zhou Zheng peeked at the giant mech. "I need more time to analyze its structural diagram!"
"No time left!" Chen Rui fired while moving to draw the mech's attention. His mind raced as he sought for a breakthrough.
Meanwhile, Lin Xi fought to keep herself conscious. She bore through the pain and reached for her tactical backpack, retrieving her last flashbang.
"Chen Rui," she gasped, "listen. Once I throw this flashbang, aim for its energy module on its back—according to previous data, that’s its only weakness!"
"Are you sure?" Chen Rui asked, the gunfire never ceasing.
There was no better choice! Lin Xi replied in a low voice, then with all her strength, she threw the Flashbang towards the mech.
A blinding light instantly filled the entire space, and the giant mech's sensors were clearly disrupted, causing its movements to momentarily halt.
Now! Lin Xi shouted.
Without hesitation, Chen Rui quickly adjusted his position and aimed the high-explosive round at the slightly exposed energy module on the mech's back before pulling the trigger.
Flames once again engulfed the corridor, accompanied by a deafening explosion that blew a massive hole in the back of the giant mech. Its enormous body swayed for a moment before crashing to the ground with a sound of metal shattering.
The corridor returned to a brief silence, with only the burning wreckage of the mech and the acrid smell in the air reminding them of the fierce battle that had just taken place.
Chen Rui walked over to Lin Xi, confirming that her injuries were not severe, and then checked on Zhou Zheng.
"Can we leave now?" Zhou Zheng's voice trembled, clearly still shaken from the earlier moment of terror.
"Let's go; this place is about to collapse." Chen Rui picked up the hard drive from the ground and carefully stored it away. He looked at the walls around them, which were beginning to crack, feeling a sense of unease creeping in.
Although they had temporarily escaped disaster, the threat of hidden currents still loomed over them like an inescapable shadow. The truth about the Abyss Warrior was just beginning to surface.
This is just the beginning. Lin Xi said softly, her gaze complex as she looked into the distance. If dark currents are truly controlling consciousness, then the enemies we face may be far more terrifying than these machines.
Chen Rui remained silent; he knew Lin Xi was right. Every step they took from here could be filled with danger and uncertainty.
As the roar of the Rising Machine echoed once more, they finally set off on their journey back to base. But whether the data they brought back could truly change the situation remained uncertain.
