In the darkness, heavy footsteps and the sound of metal grinding grew closer. The cold red eyes of the Abyss Warrior glimmered like a predator fixated on its prey. Chen Rui quickly scanned his surroundings, analyzing the situation. They were in an abandoned industrial area, where rusted steel beams and crumbling concrete walls provided some cover but severely restricted their movement.
"Lin Xi, Zhou Zheng, you two cover me while I draw their fire," Chen Rui rapidly assigned tasks, handing the hard drive to Lin Xi. "Remember, this cannot fall into their hands no matter what."
"Understood." Lin Xi nodded solemnly, carefully placing the hard drive into a protective bag to carry with him.
Taking a deep breath, Chen Rui suddenly dashed out from behind cover, firing several rounds at the enemies ahead. The bullets struck the steel armor with sharp, echoing sounds.
"Come on, you scum!" he growled, quickly changing position in an attempt to attract more Abyss Warriors to chase him.
Taking advantage of Chen Rui's distraction, Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng maneuvered around from another side. They swiftly moved along the edge of the industrial area, aiming for a backup evacuation point located to the east. However, there were far more Abyss Warriors than they had anticipated; nearly every few dozen meters, a cold Mechanical Warrior patrolled slowly.
"Is the dark tide planning to catch us all?" Zhou Zheng muttered under his breath, wiping sweat from his forehead.
"Stop complaining and move!" Lin Xi whispered sharply, his gaze scanning ahead as he took in their surroundings.
They crouched behind a collapsed reinforced concrete slab, surrounded by the mechanical footsteps of Abyss Warriors and the chilling metallic scent in the air. Lin Xi took out his night vision binoculars and carefully observed the patrol route ahead.
"There’s an Abyss Warrior patrolling at two o'clock," Lin Xi said quietly. "We need to wait for it to turn and then rush past while we have the chance."
"Got it." Zhou Zheng nodded, holding his breath as he waited for the right moment.
The instant the Abyss Warrior turned away, Lin Xi sprang up first, pulling Zhou Zheng along as they quickly dashed to another piece of cover. The gravel underfoot made faint noises that seemed to catch the enemy's attention.
"No! It's turning back!" Zhou Zheng exclaimed in alarm.
"Keep running!" Lin Xi urged without hesitation, dragging Zhou Zheng over a pile of discarded pipes to evade pursuit while swiftly drawing his pistol and firing two shots at the pursuing Mechanical Warrior. Although the bullets couldn't penetrate its armor, they struck its sensors, causing it to lose track of them momentarily.
"Not too bad," Lin Xi assessed calmly as he continued forward with Zhou Zheng.
Meanwhile, Chen Rui had drawn most of the enemy's fire but found himself in a perilous situation. Three Abyss Warriors relentlessly pursued him while his ammunition dwindled rapidly.
"Damn it! Why won't they let up?" Chen Rui rolled quickly to dodge enemy fire before shoving his last high-explosive grenade into the launcher and aiming at an Abyss Warrior not far behind him.
"Take this!" he shouted angrily as he pulled the trigger.
The grenade arced through the air and struck its target squarely in the chest. The explosion instantly engulfed the Mechanical Warrior in flames, and the shockwave knocked down two others nearby. However, these Mechanical Warriors were tougher than expected; despite their damaged armor, they continued advancing steadily toward Chen Rui.
"It looks like it's time to fight back with everything I've got." Chen Rui gritted his teeth, gripping his rifle tightly as he prepared for one last stand.
Just then, a familiar voice crackled through his communicator: "Chen Rui, retreat east! We've reached the backup evacuation point!" It was Lin Xi's voice.
Finally, news had come! Chen Rui sneered and immediately changed course toward the eastern exit.
