The night was as dark as ink, with faint starlight casting a thin veil over the figures of Chen Rui and his companions. They had just escaped from the tunnel when a low rumble echoed from afar, sounding like the roar of a giant beast emerging from the depths of the earth.
"Did we really shake it off?" Zhou Zheng looked back at the tunnel entrance, doubt evident in his voice.
Lin Xi did not respond but scanned their surroundings, trying to find a safe hiding spot. Whether they had escaped or not was irrelevant; what mattered now was finding a place to replenish their ammunition and recover their strength.
"Director Zhao's team should be able to rendezvous with us soon," Chen Rui said, rubbing his shoulder, where a wound still throbbed painfully. He pulled out a dagger, cut through the fabric, and examined the injury. Although it wasn't broken, bruising had spread up his arm, making movement difficult.
"You need to hold on," Lin Xi said, her gaze briefly resting on Chen Rui's face before continuing, "The support team will take about ten minutes to reach us, but I'm worried that the Dark Current won't give us that much time."
Chen Rui nodded. "I understand. The key now is to figure out what kind of monstrosity the Dark Current has sent after us."
The three chose a relatively concealed thicket as their temporary shelter. The distant mountains loomed ominously in the night, shrouded in mystery. The surroundings were eerily quiet, broken only by the rustling of leaves in the wind.
"Chen Rui," Lin Xi whispered, "the design of that Mechanical Beast we encountered earlier is distinctly different from an ordinary Abyss Warrior. Do you think it could be the Dark Current's ultimate weapon?"
Chen Rui closed his eyes and quickly recalled the battle scene in the tunnel. He spoke slowly, "It's not just a weapon; that thing seems more like a product of some kind of experiment. Did you notice its movement patterns? It doesn't behave like a mere machine; it resembles artificial intelligence."
"Artificial intelligence?" Zhou Zheng asked in surprise. "Are you saying it can think independently?"
"Not independently, but it can execute tasks autonomously," Chen Rui explained. "Its targets were clear; it locked onto our hard drives from start to finish and even ignored other distractions. This means its actions are entirely based on commands from the Dark Current rather than traditional combat protocols."
Lin Xi pondered for a moment before calmly stating, "If that's true, then the Dark Current is developing a more advanced combat system. Once this kind of thing goes into mass production, our disadvantages will become even more pronounced."
Chen Rui said solemnly, "So we must stop them at all costs."
As they spoke, Lin Xi suddenly perked up. "Shh! Quiet."
In the distance, a strange low-frequency vibration could be heard in the wind—a sound reminiscent of a beast's roar but tinged with mechanical coldness.
"Here they come again?" Zhou Zheng tensed up immediately. "How did they catch up so quickly?"
"Stay calm," Lin Xi quickly checked her ammunition. "If these are combat units sent by the Dark Current, then they have revealed their trump card."
Chen Rui gritted his teeth and whispered, "From the sound, there’s more than one. Prepare for battle; we won't retreat until the last moment."
Before he could finish speaking, a massive force suddenly pushed down the thicket in front of them, revealing a Mechanical Warrior slowly emerging into view. This warrior was different from the previous Abyssal Behemoth; it was more elongated and moved with greater agility. Its arms ended in sharp blades that glinted coldly under the moonlight.
"What model is this?" Lin Xi swiftly aimed her gun at the enemy.
The Mechanical Warrior did not respond but charged toward them at incredible speed, its blades flashing menacingly in the moonlight.
