The wind howled through the night as a few people lay among the ruins. Despite the monster lying defeated, they could not breathe a sigh of relief. Lin Xi looked down at the weapon in her hands, her fingers trembling slightly from the prolonged battle.
How many times has it been? she asked softly, not lifting her gaze.
How many times? Zhou Zheng replied wearily from beside her, clutching the wound on his shoulder.
The attacks from the Dark Current. Lin Xi raised her head, her eyes filled with complexity. Since we first encountered them, how many times has it been? Why do we always feel like we're colliding with an invisible wall?
Director Zhao crouched nearby, examining a core fragment from the remains of the Abyss Hunter. He did not answer Lin Xi's question but slowly stood up and handed the faintly glowing red fragment to Chen Rui.
Take a look at this, Director Zhao said gravely.
Chen Rui took the fragment and immediately began analyzing it with his scanning device. A few seconds later, his expression changed dramatically.
This crystal isn't an ordinary combat core. Chen Rui looked up. It’s more like a Beacon.
A Beacon? Lin Xi furrowed her brow. Are you saying this monster isn’t acting independently? It’s some kind of bait?
Exactly, Chen Rui nodded. Its purpose isn’t to destroy us directly; it’s gathering data through our skirmishes and transmitting that data to the main system of the Dark Current.
How much has been transmitted? Director Zhao's voice was cold, his gaze sharp.
Possibly everything. Chen Rui's tone was somber. Every detail of our skirmishes, including tactics, weapon usage frequency, and even our reaction patterns, has been recorded.
Lin Xi was stunned, her fists clenched tightly. So while we were fighting for our lives, the Dark Current was just observing our cards?
Yes. Chen Rui put the fragment into his pocket and took a deep breath. If this is true, the main system of the Dark Current may have already optimized its next opponent against us.
Damn it! Zhou Zheng slammed his fist into the ground. What are these people trying to do? It can’t just be about destroying the city!
Director Zhao did not respond. He stood among the ruins, gazing at the rising red moon in the distance, his eyes deep as night.
The group quickly cleared the battlefield and retreated to their temporary base.
The base was located in an abandoned underground air raid shelter, its entrance hidden beneath a chaotic pile of rubble. Originally a secret military facility, it had been abandoned during city renovations but unexpectedly became a temporary refuge for Squad.
Lin Xi walked into the dim basement and surveyed her surroundings. The walls were covered with tactical maps and various data analysis charts; in the center of the room sat several high-end computing devices that Chen Rui was busy working on.
Any progress? Lin Xi asked.
Chen Rui glanced at her and shook his head. The encryption methods used by the Dark Current are more complex than I imagined; I need more time.
Lin Xi nodded and then turned to Director Zhao. What should we do next?
We need to take proactive action, Director Zhao said without hesitation. The Dark Current's plans have entered deep waters; if we continue to respond passively, we will ultimately be crushed by them.
"Take the initiative?" Zhou Zheng frowned, "But we don't even know where their core base is."
Director Zhao fell silent for a moment, then took out an old map from his backpack and spread it out on the table.
"This map contains intelligence I gathered during my time in the military," Director Zhao said, pointing to a location marked as Abandoned Research Station. "This is a branch laboratory of the Dark Current. Although it was sealed off five years ago, I suspect it hasn't been completely abandoned."
Lin Xi leaned in to take a closer look at the map. "Is this the border area of the Wasteland?"
"That's right," Director Zhao nodded. "That area appears to be desolate on the surface, but recent satellite imagery has shown unusual thermal signals."
