The blue light grew increasingly intense, resembling an unusual sun suspended on the horizon, consuming everything around it. Director Zhao's figure appeared small yet resolute in the dazzling glow as he quickly located the core node of the fissure with his detector, his steps unwavering.
"Director, be careful!" Lin Xi shouted loudly.
No sooner had the words left her mouth than another shadow emerged from the fissure, larger and faster than the previous one. Its form resembled a flowing liquid, impossible to capture with the naked eye.
"Stop it!" Director Zhao shouted without looking back, continuing to push forward.
"Open fire!" Zhou Zheng yelled, being the first to pull the trigger.
The bullet penetrated the shadow; although it did not inflict damage, it slightly delayed its movements. Seizing the opportunity, Lin Xi threw another high-frequency pulse grenade, and a powerful shockwave scattered part of the shadow, but it quickly began to regroup.
"This thing is even harder to deal with than before!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth and aimed her gun at its core, preparing for a second wave of attack.
The shadow seemed thoroughly enraged, emitting a low, piercing sound as it lunged toward Squad.
"Dodge!" Chen Rui shouted, quickly pulling out a portable pulse launcher and firing a high-frequency wave. The wave struck the shadow, causing it to tremble violently as its size began to shrink rapidly.
"Effective!" Lin Xi shouted, continuing the assault!
Under the continuous attacks from the pulse launcher, the shadow finally disintegrated into countless tiny fragments before completely vanishing into thin air.
Meanwhile, Director Zhao had rushed to the core node of the fissure. He inserted his detector into the ground, and a series of complex energy fluctuations began to be rapidly analyzed.
"Director, what's the situation?" Chen Rui asked anxiously through the communicator.
"I've found the location of the core switch," Director Zhao replied while swiftly operating his equipment. However, the energy field here was unstable; an explosion could occur at any moment.
"Explosion?" Zhou Zheng's face changed. "Does that mean we would all be buried here?"
"We don't have time to discuss this." Director Zhao's voice was calm and decisive. "Chen Rui, transmit the data to me; I'll manually trigger the shutdown procedure."
"But—" Chen Rui started to say something else but was interrupted by Director Zhao: "Follow orders!"
Gritting his teeth, Chen Rui transmitted the decoded program while whispering, "Director, manually shutting down the core requires you to go into the deepest part of the fissure; this could be a one-way trip."
Director Zhao did not respond; he quickly checked his equipment and confirmed everything was in order before resolutely stepping into the blue light of the Rift Core.
Inside the blue light, time and space seemed to lose all meaning. A piercing hum filled Director Zhao's ears as bizarre scenes unfolded before him. Surrounding him were countless interwoven strands of energy, resembling a vast and intricate web connecting this world to another dimension.
"The core should be right here," Director Zhao murmured to himself as his detector emitted continuous alarms, guiding him toward the center of the fissure.
As he approached step by step, the temperature around him rose rapidly; the flow of energy in the air felt almost suffocating. Just then, a deep voice echoed from all directions.
"Who are you?"
Director Zhao suddenly stopped in his tracks, looking around, but saw nothing.
Give it up. That voice echoed again, carrying a strange magnetism that was impossible to resist.
Director Zhao let out a cold laugh: I don't need to stop it; I just need to destroy it.
