"What are these symbols?" Zhou Zheng asked, frowning.
"They look like some kind of energy conduction array," Chen Rui replied as he crouched down to examine them. "But this technology is clearly beyond our understanding."
Lin Xi picked up a tattered document that had fallen in the corner. The contents made her heart sink. The document detailed a failed experiment, the core of which was a stability test for the rift passage.
"This place is indeed related to the rift," Lin Xi said, raising her head, her voice filled with shock. "Over a decade ago, they were trying to open a passage to other dimensions."
"Did they succeed?" Zhou Zheng couldn't help but ask.
"Maybe they did, but at a cost," Chen Rui pointed to a damaged screen in the corner of the room. The data displayed was blurry, but a string of warning messages could still be discerned: Energy Overload, Passage Control!
Just as the three continued their search, a piercing static noise suddenly erupted from the communicator, followed by Director Zhao's voice: "Can you hear me?"
"It's Director Zhao!" Lin Xi exclaimed as she grabbed the communicator. "Director! Where are you?"
"In the passage..." Director Zhao's voice was intermittent, but it was clear he sounded weak. "Don't come near! It's dangerous!"
"Director! Hold on! We'll find you soon!" Lin Xi shouted, trying to stabilize the signal, but the static grew louder until it completely cut off.
"He's still alive," Zhou Zheng said, his tone laced with complex emotions. "And he's nearby."
"We have to find him," Lin Xi declared firmly. "No matter what this place hides, we must rescue him."
The squad continued deeper into the laboratory, and the air became increasingly charged with energy while the temperature around them began to plummet. Chen Rui's detector indicated an unusually high energy response in a room ahead.
"This is it," Chen Rui said, pointing at a closed iron door. "Director Zhao is likely inside."
Without hesitation, Lin Xi pushed open the door. The scene that greeted them left everyone speechless with shock. In the center of the room floated a translucent energy sphere, within which Director Zhao's figure was trapped.
"Director!" Lin Xi shouted as she rushed forward, but as she got close to the energy sphere, a powerful force repelled her, sending her crashing to the ground.
"Don't come near!" Director Zhao's voice emerged from within the energy sphere—weak yet resolute. "This is the core of the passage; it's controlling me!"
"We have to get you out!" Zhou Zheng pulled out his weapon and attempted to shoot at the energy sphere, but the bullet vanished upon contact.
"It's useless," Director Zhao said softly. "If you want to save me, the only way is to shut down the core. But doing so will completely destroy this place... including you?"
Lin Xi's voice trembled.
Director Zhao paused for a moment before gently nodding. "It's the only way."
Lin Xi gritted her teeth and clenched her fists. "No! There must be another way! We won't give up!"
"Time is running out," Director Zhao said slowly. "The core is in control; if it fully erupts, the consequences will be unimaginable."
At that moment, the energy sphere began to tremble violently, and a deep voice echoed around them: "You have ultimately come."
