The blinding light pierced through the darkness of the control room, and Lin Xi and Director Zhao tumbled through the glowing portal, crashing heavily onto the floor. Zhou Zheng rushed forward to help Lin Xi up, his gaze anxiously scanning both of them. "Lin Xi! Are you okay? What about the Director?" 0

Gasping for breath, Lin Xi shook her head, struggling to sit up despite her exhaustion. "I'm fine, but the Director—" 0

Her eyes turned to Director Zhao, who lay motionless on the ground, his face pale as paper, beads of cold sweat dotting his forehead, as if he were still trapped by some unseen force. 0

"Chen Rui!" Zhou Zheng shouted, turning his head. "Quick, check his condition!" 0

Chen Rui fumbled with the scanner, directing it towards Director Zhao. His brow furrowed deeper with concern. "This is bad; his Energy Fluctuation is abnormal! Although he has escaped the rift, the residual energy seems to be eroding his consciousness." 0

"What do we do?" Lin Xi asked anxiously. "Is there any way to eliminate this energy?" 0

"Theoretically, yes," Chen Rui replied quickly. "If we can find a frequency that counteracts the energy from the rift, we could neutralize it. But the problem is—" 0

"What is the problem?" Lin Xi pressed urgently. 0

"I need time and equipment, and this is clearly not an ideal experimental environment." Chen Rui pointed at the control room, which was beginning to collapse. "With the hub shut down, the structure here is falling apart. We need to leave—now!" 0

Zhou Zheng glanced around and noticed numerous cracks appearing on the walls while debris from the metallic ceiling continued to fall. He decisively said, "Then let's retreat! Lin Xi, can you move?" 0

"I can still manage," Lin Xi gritted her teeth and stood up, helping to support Director Zhao. "We need to hurry!" 0

The three of them each took hold of Director Zhao while one provided cover as they swiftly navigated through the increasingly shattered corridor. The surroundings warped continuously as the rift's energy seemed to reach a chaotic climax, threatening to engulf the entire laboratory. 0

"Faster!" Chen Rui shouted, pointing towards an exit ahead. "If we can get through that passage, we'll reach a safe area!" 0

Just as they were nearing the exit, a low growl echoed from behind them. Lin Xi turned sharply and saw the residual energy from the rift coalescing into a massive shadow with writhing tentacles rapidly closing in on them. 0

"It won't let us go!" Zhou Zheng cursed and raised his gun, firing wildly at the shadow. But as the bullets passed through it, they seemed to hit nothingness, having no effect whatsoever. 0

"Don't waste your bullets!" Chen Rui yelled. "It's not something that can be dealt with by physical attacks!" 0

"What do we do then?" Zhou Zheng gritted his teeth. 0

"Run!" Lin Xi commanded decisively. "Forget it; just charge for the exit!" 0

The three of them pushed themselves to their limits toward the exit, but the shadow was faster; it quickly caught up with them and lashed out with its tentacles, striking Zhou Zheng in the back. 0

"Ah!" Zhou Zheng screamed in agony as he was violently thrown against the wall, spitting out blood. 0

"Zhou Zheng!" Lin Xi cried out in alarm but didn’t stop her momentum. Instead, she quickly handed Director Zhao over to Chen Rui and dashed back toward Zhou Zheng to help him up from the ground. 0

"I'm fine," Zhou Zheng grunted through clenched teeth. "Don't worry about me!" 0

"Shut up!" Lin Xi snapped back fiercely. "Ignoring you would be an even greater burden!" 0

The shadow's tentacles struck again. This time, Lin Xi used her short blade to block, but the immense force sent her stumbling back several steps. The shadow seemed to sense Lin Xi's resistance and let out a piercing shriek, causing the entire corridor to shake violently. 0

"It's blocking the exit!" Chen Rui shouted in terror. "We need to move now, or it will be too late!" 0

Lin Xi gritted her teeth and yelled at Zhou Zheng, "Hold on! I have a plan!" She pulled out the last energy disruptor from her waist, quickly adjusting it to maximum power before throwing it towards the shadow. 0

Boom! 0

The disruptor exploded mid-air, instantly releasing a wave of intense electromagnetic energy. The shadow emitted a sharp howl as its tentacles trembled violently, momentarily freezing in place. 0

"Now! Run!" Lin Xi shouted. She and Zhou Zheng dashed toward the exit. Once they regrouped with Chen Rui, the three of them worked together to carry Director Zhao out of the corridor. 0

Just as they stepped into the exit passage, the entire laboratory erupted with a deafening explosion. The energy from the fissure spiraled out of control, engulfing the entire area. 0

Minutes later, the squad finally escaped the dangerous zone. They collapsed onto the ground, panting heavily as they stared at the burning ruins behind them, their hearts heavy with mixed emotions. 0

"What about the Director?" Lin Xi quickly sat up to check on Director Zhao's condition. 0

Chen Rui picked up a detector and frowned. "The energy erosion is still ongoing, but it's not yet irreversible. I need more specialized equipment to completely eliminate these residual energies." 0

"Then let's get back to base as soon as possible," Lin Xi said urgently; time was running out for Director Zhao. 0

"Right," Zhou Zheng nodded. He struggled to rise from the ground, his expression still pained but his gaze unwavering. "But we need to prepare. This situation is far more complicated than we imagined." 0

Lin Xi silently nodded. Though the fissure had closed, her mind was filled with questions: Where did these fissures come from? Why had Director Zhao become a vessel for them? 0

More importantly, that final howl from the shadow seemed to convey some kind of vague message. 0

"This is just the beginning," she murmured, her eyes fierce with determination. "We must uncover the truth, no matter the cost." 0

To be continued... 0
