The remnants of the explosion gradually subsided, leaving behind a scorched earth and crumbling walls in the rift zone, with the acrid scent of charred materials lingering in the air. Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng led their squad members back to the base, each face etched with grave expressions. They knew that although they had successfully destroyed the Rift Core, the storm was far from over; instead, there was an oppressive sense that something more ominous was approaching.
On the way back to the base, Chen Rui's voice crackled through the communicator: "Leader Lin, the Surveillance System has detected a new Energy Fluctuation. You need to return quickly!"
A new fluctuation? Lin Xi furrowed his brow, wondering if there were other rifts.
"There may be more than one," Chen Rui replied quietly. "And these fluctuations are stronger than before, with a wider distribution. It’s possible that destroying the core was just part of a larger plan."
Understood. We will hurry back. Lin Xi responded swiftly, increasing their speed.
Half an hour later, the squad arrived at the base. Lin Xi headed straight for the command center where Chen Rui had been waiting for some time. He pointed at a map displayed on the screen, highlighting several areas marked as sources of the new Energy Fluctuation.
"The distribution of these rifts seems random," Chen Rui explained. "But if we arrange them by intensity, their trajectories appear to converge around a central point."
Lin Xi studied the map for a moment before calmly asking, "Where is this central point?"
Chen Rui tapped a few keys, and the map zoomed in to reveal an abandoned industrial park: "Here, Xinghe Industrial Park—a factory area that has been deserted for years."
"Xinghe Industrial Park," Zhou Zheng echoed softly, a hint of doubt flashing in his eyes. That place had been completely sealed off ten years ago due to a major industrial accident; it remained desolate to this day. Why would it become a center for rift activity now?
"It may have been repurposed by someone," Lin Xi said solemnly. "We need to investigate that source of fluctuation immediately."
"Wait," Chen Rui interrupted. "I have more important information."
As he spoke, he pulled up another data file on the screen, revealing a series of strange symbols. At first glance, they appeared chaotic, but upon closer inspection, they seemed to represent some form of language or code.
"What is this?" Zhou Zheng asked with a frown.
"This is a signal from the rift's Energy Fluctuation," Chen Rui replied. "As I mentioned earlier, there are hidden instructions within these fluctuations. This set of symbols is what we decoded from the recent wave."
"What did you decode?" Lin Xi inquired.
Chen Rui paused for a moment before softly reading out the translation displayed on the screen: "Connection complete; activation will commence soon."
The entire command center fell into a brief silence.
"Activation? Activation of what?" Zhou Zheng couldn't help but ask.
"I'm not sure," Chen Rui shook his head. "Considering what we encountered with the Void Child, I suspect that the rift is not the ultimate goal but merely a means to achieve something much larger."
Lin Xi gritted his teeth and pondered for a moment before decisively ordering, "Gather all available personnel and head to Xinghe Industrial Park immediately. We must uncover what’s happening before they can activate it."
As night fell heavily around them, the sound of engines shattered the silence as Lin Xi led his team toward their target under the cover of darkness.
Xinghe Industrial Park appeared particularly desolate from a distance, with dilapidated factories and rust-covered equipment casting ghostly shadows under the moonlight. As one approached the park, the strange sensation in the air became increasingly pronounced.
There was something wrong with the magnetic field here. Chen Rui reported through the communicator, noting that the instrument data indicated the magnetic fluctuations were far beyond normal levels, as if disturbed by some external force.
