"Everyone, stay alert," Lin Xi said softly, raising her weapon.
The members of the squad spread out, conducting searches in groups throughout the area. Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng led the core team straight to the center of the Energy Fluctuation, encountering no obstacles along the way.
"It's too quiet," Zhou Zheng murmured, tightening his grip on the gun. "This place doesn't feel abandoned; it feels like someone is deliberately letting us in."
Lin Xi nodded. "Keep moving and stay vigilant."
Finally, they reached the location where the fluctuations were strongest: an abandoned main factory. A pungent odor filled the air, and the ground and walls were covered in mottled rust. In the center of the factory stood a strange device emitting a faint glow.
"What is that?" Zhou Zheng stared at the device, confusion evident in his eyes.
It resembled a ritual platform made of several large metal plates, its surface etched with intricate runes. At its center floated a translucent crystal, slowly rotating and emitting an eerie blue light.
"This is the source of the Energy Fluctuation," Chen Rui confirmed through the communicator. "That crystal looks very similar to the one we saw in the rift, but its energy intensity is much higher."
Lin Xi raised her hand, signaling everyone to stop. "Chen Rui, can this device be shut down?"
"I'm analyzing its structure now. You all need to be careful; there might be unexpected developments."
Just then, a low humming sound suddenly resonated around the factory, as if something had been activated.
"Something's happening!" Zhou Zheng quickly raised his gun in defense, and all squad members immediately entered combat mode.
The humming grew louder, and shadows began to emerge from the dark corners of the factory. Their forms were similar to those of the Rift Guardians but appeared more aggressive, with cold blue light flickering in their eyes and swift, precise movements.
"Are these... creations from the rift?" Lin Xi's eyes widened.
"They're protecting the device!" Chen Rui's voice came through the communicator. "You must break through their defenses and destroy that crystal; otherwise, the device will continue to operate!"
"Everyone, follow orders!" Lin Xi commanded coldly. "Cover Squad as we attack the core; destroy it at all costs!"
A fierce battle erupted within the factory.
The speed and strength of the Rift Creations far exceeded that of ordinary humans. The team relied on their well-trained coordination and high-tech equipment to temporarily hold them back. However, the enemy's numbers seemed endless; for every one that fell, new creations surged forth from the shadows.
"Cover me!" Lin Xi shouted as she charged toward the center of the device with her assault squad.
She deftly dodged a striking tentacle and quickly closed in on the crystal, securely attaching an explosive device to its surface before rapidly setting a countdown.
"The device has activated its self-defense!" Chen Rui's anxious voice came through. "You have only two minutes left; you must evacuate immediately!"
"Everyone retreat!" Lin Xi shouted as she provided cover for her teammates while moving swiftly toward the exit.
Just as she was about to leave, a massive Rift Creation blocked her path, roaring as it lunged toward her.
Lin Xi tightened her grip on the weapon in her hand, her gaze sharp as a blade. Since she had come this far, there was no turning back.
