In the Command Center, Chen Rui sat in front of a row of complex instruments, his eyes fixed on a screen displaying a series of rapidly fluctuating energy data. His fingers flew over the keyboard as he attempted to extract more clues from the signals left by the Beacon device amidst the ruins of battle.
Lin Xi walked in from outside, still clad in her combat suit, her face etched with exhaustion. She approached Chen Rui from behind and asked in a low voice, "Any discoveries?"
"Yes." Chen Rui lifted his head, his voice low and tense. "The Beacon signal is not a single transmission; it connects to a larger network. Although the explosion destroyed the Beacon itself, I intercepted some residual data."
Lin Xi furrowed her brow. "Can we trace it back to the source?"
Chen Rui took a deep breath. "That's precisely the problem. The signal is layered and obscured; its path branches through multiple nodes, like a complex web. What we see now is just the tip of the iceberg."
Lin Xi pondered for a moment. "In other words, this device is not standalone; it's just part of a larger system, right?"
Chen Rui nodded. "Exactly. And worse still, I've discovered that this network is continuously expanding, and there may be more similar Beacons deployed across various locations. If we don't act quickly to stop it, both the frequency and scale of the rifts will escalate."
Zhou Zheng, who had been listening to their conversation, approached them. "So we need to locate these nodes and destroy them one by one to completely dismantle their network?"
"In theory," Chen Rui paused for a moment, tapping a few keys on the keyboard. A holographic map appeared on the screen. "Based on the signal trajectories, I've pinpointed some potential areas. These locations are widely spread out, with some even deep within enemy-controlled territory."
Lin Xi studied the map, her gaze landing on several marked points. She pointed to one of them. "Here—what's this place? It's the closest to us."
Chen Rui zoomed in on the map, revealing a dilapidated urban area. "According to the data, this was once an abandoned Satellite City. Based on energy fluctuations, it could be one of their key nodes."
"Satellite City?" Lin Xi frowned slightly. "What’s special about this place?"
"Before it was abandoned, Satellite City was a large Experimental Base," Chen Rui explained. "Decades ago, many experiments involving energy conversion were conducted here; they even attempted research into interdimensional technology."
Hearing this, Lin Xi felt an unsettling premonition: "It seems we must head there as soon as possible."
Zhou Zheng nodded in agreement. "This operation must be executed with utmost caution. If they know we're tracking their targets, they may have already set up larger traps."
Lin Xi smirked coldly. "No matter what plans they have, we have to break through."
Two days later, Lin Xi led an elite squad quietly into action. The Satellite City was over a hundred miles away from their base, and they chose to move at night to avoid detection.
The convoy wove through the wilderness under the silent night sky, with only the low rumble of engines and the crunch of tires on gravel breaking the stillness. Inside the vehicle, Lin Xi reviewed the information provided by Chen Rui in search of more useful insights.
"Leader Lin," Zhou Zheng asked from beside her, "is our mission reconnaissance or direct destruction of targets?"
Lin Xi closed the documents with determination in her eyes. "If we have an opportunity to destroy a target, we take it immediately. The enemy won’t give us much time."
Zhou Zheng nodded but remained filled with questions. The Satellite City had been abandoned for over twenty years; logically speaking, there shouldn't be any activity left in such a place. Yet here they were, with enemies choosing to place a Beacon node there—this alone was filled with ominous implications.
At three in the morning, the convoy finally reached the outskirts of Satellite City.
