Through the car window, everyone saw a desolate wasteland. The dilapidated buildings stood like giant beasts eroded by time, silently looming in the night. An eerie atmosphere hung in the air, sending chills down their spines.
Lin Xi activated her communicator and ordered in a low voice, "All units, pay attention. Split into two groups and advance gradually. Report immediately upon discovering any targets."
After the team dispersed, Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng led one group of members toward the center of the ruins. As they passed a collapsed skyscraper, Lin Xi suddenly halted, scanning the surroundings with vigilance. "Did anyone hear something?"
Zhou Zheng tilted his head to listen and nodded after a moment. "It sounds like metal scraping—soft and close."
Lin Xi quickly gestured for her team to remain alert as they cautiously moved through the high-rise debris toward the source of the sound.
Not far away in the ruins, a shadow suddenly shifted. The team members immediately raised their weapons, aiming at the target.
"Don't shoot!" Lin Xi whispered urgently.
She shone her tactical flashlight on the shadow, revealing a small, filthy girl curled up among discarded mechanical parts, her wide eyes filled with terror as she stared at them.
Zhou Zheng was taken aback. "How could there be a child here?"
Lin Xi did not lower her guard and slowly approached. Suddenly, the little girl let out a piercing scream and pointed behind them. "Run! The monster is coming!"
Before her words faded, a deep roar echoed from within the ruins, causing the ground to tremble as countless red lights illuminated the darkness—Rift Creatures surged forth once more.
"Retreat!" Lin Xi commanded immediately while scooping up the little girl and sprinting toward the back of the team.
The group quickly fell back into a more open area, forming a defensive formation. After handing the little girl to one of her teammates, Lin Xi joined the fight.
The battle was exceptionally fierce; these Rift Creatures were clearly more cunning than before. They seemed to understand how to disperse the team's firepower and outnumbered them significantly.
"Leader Lin, there are too many enemies! We need reinforcements!" Zhou Zheng shouted while firing his weapon.
"Hold on!" Lin Xi gritted her teeth as her weapon began to overheat, yet she continued to pull the trigger without hesitation.
Just when the situation reached a stalemate, Lin Xi suddenly heard Chen Rui's voice in her ear: "Leader Lin, I've intercepted a new signal; its source is near you!"
Lin Xi quickly regained her composure. "Specific location?"
Chen Rui replied, "According to the coordinates, it's underground two hundred meters in front of you to the left."
Lin Xi decisively ordered, "Cover me; I'm going for the signal source!"
The team fought desperately to provide cover as Lin Xi and Zhou Zheng swiftly advanced toward their target location. After navigating through an abandoned staircase, they discovered a hidden subway entrance—a deeper secret seemed to lie concealed within this dark underground space.
