At the entrance of the subway, a decaying odor assaulted the senses, and in the darkness, it felt as if countless eyes were watching every intruder. Lin Xi switched on her tactical flashlight, the beam sweeping across the walls, illuminating broken tracks, collapsed pillars, and numerous scattered mechanical debris.
"It looks like this place has been abandoned for decades," Zhou Zheng whispered, his footsteps nearly silent.
Lin Xi did not respond; she carefully examined the surroundings and then gestured for her team to follow. "Stay alert. This could be a trap set by the enemy."
The squad moved along the tracks, and Chen Rui's voice came through the communication device. "The signal is getting stronger, about a meter directly below you. But be careful; I just detected an unusual Energy Fluctuation. There might still be enemies hiding."
"Copy that," Lin Xi replied, quickening her pace.
At the end of the subway tunnel stood a massive iron door, covered in rust and nearly blending into the surrounding walls. It would be difficult to notice its presence without close inspection.
"Chen Rui, is the signal source behind this door?" Lin Xi asked into the communicator.
"Yes," Chen Rui's voice responded. "However, I've detected complex defense mechanisms behind it. Be cautious; triggering an alarm or other traps is possible."
Lin Xi signaled Zhou Zheng and two other team members to approach and begin inspecting the area around the door. They discovered a damaged control panel with aged wiring that still faintly revealed its complex structure.
"Can we hack it?" Lin Xi inquired.
Zhou Zheng frowned as he studied it for a moment before shaking his head. "The wiring is too old; forcing it to activate might trigger the defense system directly."
After pondering for a moment, Lin Xi turned to one of the Engineer team members. "Use the portable cutting tool to manually create an entry point."
The team member nodded and took out the tool to begin working. As the cutting device powered up, brilliant sparks erupted in the darkness, and gradually, a gap large enough for one person began to form in the iron door.
Just as the door was about to be completely cut open, a piercing alarm suddenly blared.
"No! We've been discovered!" Zhou Zheng quickly raised Wu Lan while scanning their surroundings.
From the other end of the subway tunnel came a low rumbling growl, followed by thundering footsteps that shook the ground.
"The Rift Creation is here!" one team member shouted.
Lin Xi decisively ordered, "Zhou Zheng, take a group to cover us! The rest follow me through the door!"
After passing through the iron door, Lin Xi led her squad into a vast underground space. It resembled an abandoned laboratory, with walls covered in intricate wiring and symbols. In the center stood a massive metal platform with a glowing Black Crystal floating above it.
"What is this?" one team member whispered.
Lin Xi did not answer; she slowly approached the Crystal but felt a powerful Energy Fluctuation surge as she stepped onto the platform, causing her to instinctively take a step back.
"Leader Lin, this thing is not an ordinary energy device," Zhou Zheng's voice came through the communicator. "It seems to be some kind of core node; it's the source of the energy fluctuations."
"Can it be destroyed?" Lin Xi asked calmly.
"Don't act recklessly for now!" Chen Rui's voice cut in. "I'm analyzing its structure. If we destroy it impulsively, it could trigger a chain reaction that would cause the entire Area to collapse."
Lin Xi frowned. "We don't have time. The enemy is closing in. If we can't destroy this node, once their reinforcements arrive, we'll be trapped."
"Give me a minute!" Chen Rui's tone was firm. "Just one minute, and I can break its defense mechanism to ensure that the destruction won't lead to a greater disaster."
Lin Xi paused for a moment before nodding. "Everyone, prepare to defend and cover Chen Rui while he cracks the device!"
Meanwhile, the battle outside the iron door had reached a fever pitch.
Zhou Zheng led his team in a desperate attempt to block the onslaught of Rift Creation, but the enemy's numbers were overwhelming, and their defenses could be breached at any moment.
"Leader Lin, we can't hold out much longer!" Zhou Zheng shouted through the communicator, his voice tinged with urgency.
"Hold on for three more minutes!" Lin Xi replied through the communicator. "We'll finish the mission soon!"
Gritting his teeth, Zhou Zheng adjusted their formation and used the terrain to try to slow down the enemy's advance. However, deep down, he knew that if Lin Xi couldn't complete the mission in time, they might face total annihilation.
In the underground laboratory, Chen Rui's voice came through the communicator: "I've cracked it! You can proceed!"
Without hesitation, Lin Xi raised Wu Lan and aimed at the Black Crystal before pulling the trigger. A brilliant beam shot out, striking the Crystal directly.
The Crystal emitted a piercing shriek before beginning to vibrate violently; its surface cracked with countless fissures until it finally exploded with a thunderous roar.
A powerful shockwave swept through the entire laboratory, causing Lin Xi and his teammates to stagger back several steps. They quickly steadied themselves and observed the aftermath of the Crystal's disappearance.
"Leader Lin, the Energy Fluctuation has vanished!" Chen Rui's voice was filled with excitement. "You've destroyed the node!"
Lin Xi took a deep breath and turned to give orders: "Retreat!"
After regrouping, Lin Xi led everyone swiftly out of the subway tunnel. With the node destroyed, Rift Creation began to collapse; having lost their energy source, they turned to ash and vanished into thin air.
Once back on solid ground, the team members collapsed onto the sandy ground in exhaustion, but each face bore a hint of victorious joy.
This was just the beginning. Lin Xi gazed at the distant sky with determination; there were more nodes waiting to be destroyed, and the identity of the mastermind behind it all must be uncovered as soon as possible.
Zhou Zheng sat nearby, wiping sweat from his brow. "Leader Lin, we almost faced total annihilation this time. I hope next time we have more time to prepare."
Lin Xi nodded with a bittersweet smile. "Next time won't be any easier, but we must keep moving forward."
Everyone in the team understood that this battle had only just begun; the road ahead would undoubtedly be fraught with danger.
