The cold voice in the headphones echoed sharply in the dark depths of the sea, instantly tightening the nerves of the team members.
"Who is it?!" Lin Xi asked in a low voice, her gaze sweeping around. The source of the voice was unclear, filling her with an indescribable unease.
"You've come this far and still don't know who I am?" The voice dripped with mockery. "Or should I ask, have you never wondered who created the Abyss Network?"
Lin Xi took a deep breath, striving to calm her inner turmoil. "Whoever you are, your plans end here today."
"End here?" The voice scoffed. "You underestimate my preparations. You and your team are merely pawns sent to their deaths."
As soon as the words left its mouth, the entire seabed suddenly shook violently, and the surrounding waters became chaotic. The surface of a massive circular structure began to glow brighter with a blue light, its patterns seemingly coming to life and flowing in response to some unseen call.
"The magnetic field intensity is rising rapidly!" Chen Rui's voice was filled with tension. "They've activated the core defense system; the physical rules of the Area could be disrupted!"
Lin Xi quickly issued orders: "Everyone, enter defensive mode! Zhou Zheng, you and I will cover; Chen Rui, try to crack their control system and find a weakness!"
A swarm of oddly shaped drones surged out from around the base. These drones were larger than previous models, their surfaces covered in reflective scales that seemed to grant them some form of invisibility. They attacked with astonishing speed, creating an overwhelming sense of pressure.
"Be careful! Prioritize defense; do not attack recklessly!" Lin Xi commanded decisively.
"Understood!" The team members immediately formed a defensive formation, using their diving gear and underwater rocks for cover while seeking opportunities to counterattack.
"Leader Lin," Zhou Zheng whispered while providing cover, "these drones seem to be intentionally driving us away rather than just attacking."
Lin Xi analyzed calmly: "Their goal might be to lead us into a trap."
At that moment, Chen Rui's voice came through the headphones: "Leader Lin, I've just intercepted a data stream; these drones' movement trajectories seem to operate based on a specific algorithm."
"An algorithm?" Lin Xi caught on quickly. "Can it be cracked?"
"It will take time; I need more sample data," Chen Rui replied anxiously. "You all need to hold them off as long as possible!"
Holding them off was feasible, but time was running short. Lin Xi lowered her voice. "Team members, spread out and create diversions; buy Chen Rui some time."
The team scattered and engaged in a tug-of-war with the drones. Lin Xi took on the bulk of the firepower, nimbly weaving between rocks and evading wave after wave of attacks while striking back with precision.
"Leader Lin! Be careful!" Zhou Zheng suddenly shouted.
Lin Xi turned sharply to find a drone diving toward her at high speed. She quickly raised her weapon and fired an underwater explosive; the drone was destroyed less than two meters away from her, scattering debris everywhere.
Lin Xi exhaled sharply and continued to ask through her headset: "Chen Rui, how's it going?"
"Almost there! I've found some vulnerabilities!" Chen Rui's voice carried a hint of excitement. "Just hold on for another two minutes, and I can incapacitate their core system!"
"Everyone, keep stalling!" Lin Xi commanded loudly.
Time ticked away, and Chen Rui finally shouted the exhilarating news: "We did it! The core system has been disrupted by my interference program, and the drone control signals are collapsing!"
Sure enough, the movements of the drones began to slow down, eventually floating in the water as if they had lost power.
"Well done!" Lin Xi couldn't help but praise.
However, before the team could breathe a sigh of relief, a low humming sound suddenly echoed through the base. Lin Xi's tactical display lit up with warning signs indicating that the magnetic field intensity inside the base was rising at an incredible rate.
"What’s going on?!" Lin Xi frowned and asked.
Chen Rui quickly analyzed the situation, his expression changing: "They've activated the core self-destruct program! If the magnetic field intensity reaches a critical point, the entire Area could experience a massive explosion!"
"How large is the explosion radius?"
"At least ten kilometers. All living beings will be torn apart by the distorted magnetic field!"
Lin Xi made a swift decision: "We must enter the base immediately and find a way to shut down the core device!"
But Chen Rui hesitated for a moment. "Once we go in, we might lose communication."
"We don't have time to think about that now," Lin Xi said firmly. "Everyone, prepare to breach!"
The team quickly approached the entrance of the base, which was a massive metal door covered in strange symbols. Chen Rui hacked into the lock remotely, and the metal door slowly opened, revealing a dark passage leading deep into the base.
"Leader Lin, I'll stay outside to maintain communication and keep watch," Chen Rui said.
"Alright, Chen Rui. You’re our backup," Lin Xi nodded and then led the remaining team members into the base.
The environment inside the base was unsettling. The walls flickered with an eerie blue light, resembling a living organism. A low-frequency humming filled the air, as if the entire structure was whispering.
"This place feels alive," Zhou Zheng murmured, gripping his weapon tightly.
"Stay alert; don’t let your guard down," Lin Xi warned. "Our target is the Core Control Room; don’t be distracted by our surroundings."
They moved quickly through the passage until they arrived at a vast circular room. In the center floated a massive blue Shadow Stone, its surface pulsating with strange light as if it contained boundless energy.
"That’s the core device!" Lin Xi shouted.
Just as they approached it, a vague shadow slowly emerged from within the Shadow Stone and spoke in a chilling tone:
"Welcome to the end of the abyss."
